We took a couple shortcuts for this traditional lasagna recipe by using store-bought marinara and boxed pasta sheets. It saves a ton of time without sacrificing any ﻿flavor. Make sure to follow these tips.

Classic Lasagna

Found the measurements, and quantities were extremely off. Ended up throwing out a lot of noodles and having to make more meat and ran out of cheese slices even though we used 2lbs of cheese.

This recipe did not work out for me at all. The quantities were WAY off. For a start you need 2lb of beef.
For the mozzarella, I sliced fresh moz myself, which ended up beeing think and making it extra cheesy - better to buy sliced moz (slightly processed).
Finally, the whole milk ricotta mix was not easily spreadable at all... perhaps I used the worng broand or should have used the egg white as suggested in the other comments.

Great recipe! I used half ground beef/half hot Italian sausage.

I ended up only getting 2 full layers into my pan. I used 8 noodles and had a bunch of oily noodles leftover. I also didn't need 2 full pounds of mozzarella, but I'm sure we'll manage to eat that. Overall, easier recipe than any I've tried before. Very tasty.

My Family loved this recipe. I added the cinnamon the the meat mixture, which many Greek recipes call for (we are Greek) and it was wonderful. Even my daughter, who doesn’t like lasagna, ate some and said how good it was.

Actually when I moved to the south in  60s-70s you could not get Ricotta in grocery stores, so I did use cottage cheese with eggs added.  I worked quite well.  I now use Ricotta and also add the egg.

Fantastic. I made it in a 9x9 pan so halved the recipe (sorta). Added more cheese, because there is never enough for us :) Laid out noodles as you suggested and sprayed with olive oil. First time I haven’t had them tear. Made it so easy. Also the tip to under cooking lasagna was valuable. Used a sprinkle of cinnamon. Just perfect. My husband said you need to make this again.  I used Barilla marinara sauce.

Turned out excellent. The only thing I did different was to divide it into two pans. One I froze, the second I baked after leaving in the fridge overnight. To answer one of the below questions, I then increased the 400• time to 30 minutes from 18-20.  Worked out great.

Best Classic Lasagna Recipe

lb. sweet Italian sausage

onion

garlic

(15 tomato sauce

(15 oz.) can crushed tomatoes

tomato paste

water

sugar

salt (-divided)

Italian seasoning (-divided)

basil leaves (-divided)

flat-leaf parsley (-divided)

mozzarella cheese (-divided)

(1 3/4 cups) whole milk Ricotta cheese

parmesan cheese (-divided)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Make the meat sauce.  Add beef and sausage to a large skillet over medium-high heat, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon.  Add the onion and garlic.  Cook until meat is browned, about 6-8 minutes.  Drain the fat from the meat.  Return the meat to the skillet.

Add the tomato sauce, crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, water, sugar, 2 teaspoons salt, 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning, 1 teaspoon basil, and the black pepper.  Stir until well combined.  Cover and reduce the heat to low.  Simmer the sauce for 30 minutes. Stir in 2 tablespoons of the minced parsley.

As the sauce cooks, make the ricotta mixture.  In a large bowl, add 1 cup mozzarella, the ricotta, 1/4 cup parmesan, 2 tablespoons of the parsley, the egg, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning, and 1/2 teaspoon basil.  Stir until well incorporated.

Cook the pasta al dente, according to it’s package directions.

Assemble the lasagna.  In a 13x9 inch baking dish, add a very thin layer of meat sauce (about 1/4 cup).  Layer 3 lasagna noodles, 1/3 of the ricotta mixture, and 1 1/2 (level) cups of meat sauce.  Repeat the layers twice.

Add a final layer of the remaining noodles, meat sauce, 1 cup mozzarella, and 1/4 cup parmesan.

Cover with foil that has been sprayed with nonstick cooking spray.  Bake for 45 minutes.  Remove the foil.  Bake 15 more minutes.

Let the lasagna cool for 15-20 minutes before cutting.

28 Ounce can crushed tomatoes

tomato sauce

Tablespoons Italian Seasoning

salt and pepper

In a large skillet over medium high heat add the olive oil and onion.  Sauté until tender and add the ground beef and sausage.   Cook and crumble until brown and cooked throughout.  Add crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, Italian seasoning, sugar, and basil.  Let simmer on low heat.

In a large pot, bring the water to a boil.  Add the lasagna noodles and cook for 8-10 minutes.   Drain and rinse in cold water.

In medium sized bowl add the ricotta cheese, parmesan, and egg.  Mix until incorporated.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees and spray a 9x13 inch pan with non stick spray and set aside.

To make the lasagna start by spreading 1 cup of the meat sauce on the bottom.  Arrange the noodles in a single layer over the meat sauce.  Spread 1/2 cup of the ricotta cheese, on top of the noodles followed by shredded mozzarella cheese.  Repeat the layers and top with cheese.

Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 20 minutes.  Remove the foil and bake and additional 20-25 minutes or until it is heated throughout and cheese is bubbly.  Let it cool for 10 minutes before serving.

Vegan Lasagna With Tofu Ricotta

lasagna noodles (standard size, enough for 3 layers)

½ of a large yellow onion, diced

mushrooms

spinach

¼ cup of unsweetened, plain soy milk

lemon juice

basil basil leaves

salt

marinara sauce (store-bought or from the recipe

In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook the lasagna noodles according to the directions on the package. Drain the noodles, rinse with cold water to cool, and set aside.

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onion, zucchini, mushrooms, and garlic and sauté for about 5 minutes stirring occasionally, until slightly softened. Turn off the heat. Stir in the spinach, cover the skillet, and set aside to allow the spinach to wilt.

Place the tofu, soy milk, lemon juice, basil, and salt in the bowl of a food processor and pulse to combine. Depending on the size of your food processor, you may need to push everything down with a spoon several times between pulses so all the tofu gets evenly crumbled. When you reach a crumbly ricotta­-style consistency, spoon the mixture into a large bowl. Stir in the sautéed vegetables and spinach until evenly combined.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Spread 1 cup of the marinara sauce evenly across the bottom of a 9 × 13 ­inch baking dish. Follow this with a layer of 4 overlapping lasagna noodles, then a layer of half of the tofu mixture. Repeat with another 1½ cups of the marinara, another layer of noodles, and the second half of the tofu mixture. End with another 1½ cups of the marinara and a final layer of noodles, and spread the remaining 1 cup of marinara sauce on top, being sure to coat all the noodles.

Bake for 45 minutes. Garnish with the basil leaves (if using).

I pre-ordered the friendly vegan cookbook, and LOVE it. This is now going to be a weekly dinner in our family. We all thought it was the best lasagna we have ever had. My kids are even obsessed with it, and my 6 year old wants to eat it every day. He actually asked for it for breakfast this morning haha. ❤️

Easy Vegan Lasagna With Tofu Ricotta

An easy lasagna recipe that&#x27;s packed with flavor! Lasagna noodles are layered with meat, spaghetti sauce, and three types of cheese for the ultimate Italian meal. Serve it alongside a simple salad and garlic bread for a cozy dinner that’s perfect this time of the year!

Easy Lasagna Recipe

mozzarella cheese, (divided)

(15 ounce) container ricotta cheese

Parmesan cheese, (divided)

parsley

egg, (lightly beaten)

(26 ounce) jar marinara sauce

water*

lasagna noodles, (uncooked)

Heat oven to 350°F and prepare a 9x13&quot; baking dish with cooking spray; set aside.

Brown meat in large skillet on medium-high heat. Meanwhile, mix 1-1/4 cups mozzarella, ricotta, 1/4 cup Parmesan, parsley and egg until blended. Set aside.

Drain meat; return to skillet. Add marinara sauce in with meat and stir to combine. Add 1 cup water to empty sauce jar; cover with lid and shake well. Pour into meat mixture; stir until blended.

Spread 1 cup meat sauce onto bottom of baking dish; top with layers of 3 lasagna noodles, 1/3 of the ricotta cheese mixture and 1 cup meat sauce. Repeat layers twice. Top with remaining noodles, meat sauce and cheeses. Cover with foil that has been sprayed with cooking spray.

Bake 1 hour or until heated through, removing foil after 45 min. Let stand 15 to 30 minutes before cutting to serve. Garnish with fresh parsley and enjoy!

Do you usually add ricotta to your lasagna?

Loved this!  I have made many lasagnas but this was my first in a slow cooker .  Excellent results!  It even produced the slightly crunchy  Cheesy edges like in a baked lasagna.  I’ll definitely make this again but will add a layer of fresh spinach the next time around as we all love that in our lasagna.

Best lasagna I’ve ever made!  No need to grease the crock pot.  In addition to ground beef (yes you need to remove grease once meat is brown). I also included 2 links, Italian sweet sausage sliced and browned. Cooked on low for 3.5 hours and lasagna noodles were perfect. Added a splash of red wine to meat and pasta sauce before layering into pot. I am amazed on how good this was.  Never going back to traditional method.

We've tried this with ground beef, a mixture of beef & italian sausage, and most recently with ground green onion venison/pork mixture and it has been a crowd pleaser every single time. I've come back to this page several times over the years and now I kind of know it by heart. One of our family's favorites for sure.

I would like to note that after making this several times, you can tweak to your liking and it will always turn out awesome. We use 5 cheese italian blend along with ricotta. We double the cheese every time, still turns out fine. YOU DO NOT NEED oven ready lasagna noodles, they'll turn into pudding anyway. Cut out the problem of having to find them by using regular lasagna noodles (dry) and incorporating about 1/2 cup of water to your sauce before layering(rinsing out your jars will do nicely). 

Don't be afraid to experiment.

I've been creating lasagna this way for several years. I usually use italian sausage rather than beef  and an italian blend for the cheese rather than plain mozzarella. I've used small curd cottage cheese a few times (cheaper than riccota), but ricotta is so much better. You don't need to use the no-boil noodles as some have suggested. Regular dry lasagna noodles are fine. In fact they work better in this recipe (the no-boil noodles turn into a pastey mush). It will never beat the flavor and consistency of lasagna baked in an oven, but it's close, and an excellent substitute when you need an easy middle of the week meal.

Made this once, family loved it. Tonight I’m making it again. We had no working oven for MONTHS, so this was a nice change in the repeated meals

Made this the other day, I seemed to mis-measure the sauce because I ran out near the last later.  I will have to plan it better next time.  I also think 4 hours was a bit much, the edges were burnt crusty and not just well done crusty.  I will do 3.5 hours next time and maybe overlap the noodles a little better.  Over all it was good and eaten for the most part, but the hard crusty edges made the outer layer a bit much to eat.

I made this last night for my family and it was a hit! I used cottage cheese instead because I don't care for ricotta. I cooked mine about 4 1/2 hours and that was almost too long. I'll cook it 4 hours next time. I'm a vegetarian, so I didn't eat any, but I'll be using veggie meat when I make it next time!

Absolutely delicious! My entire family loves this dish and constantly asks me to make it. I followed all the instructions and have tried this with both sausage and ground beef and either still tastes amazing!

no-boil lasagne pasta sheets

Preheat oven to 180°C. In a medium bowl, stir ricotta, 200g mozzarella, Parmesan, Italian seasoning, and egg until combined. Season with salt and pepper.&nbsp;

Grease a 22 x 33cm baking dish with cooking spray. Spread a thick layer of marinara on bottom of dish. Add a layer of lasagne sheets&nbsp;followed by some sauce and cheese mixture. Repeat 5 or 6 times (depending on how deep your pan is), ending with sauce. Then top with the remaining mozzarella

Cover with foil and bake&nbsp;for 35 minutes. Remove foil and&nbsp;raise oven to 200°C. Cook until cheese is melty, about 15 minutes more. Let rest for 15 minutes.

Garnish with basil and parsley before serving.

Get Ready To Indulge With Vegetarian Lasagna

This is hands down the Best Lasagna Recipe ever! Easy, cheesy, meaty and so so delicious! Layer up the hearty meat sauce, different cheeses and lasagna pasta and then bake until hot and bubbly.

The Best Lasagna Recipe Ever

In a large heavy-bottomed pot, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add in onion and saute 2-3 minutes. Add in garlic and ground beef. Break meat apart as it browns. Once meat has browned completely, pour in diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, water, bay leaves, dried basil, sugar, Italian Seasoning and salt. Bring to boil, then reduce heat to simmer. Cook sauce 1-2 hours or until very thick. You may have to add a little extra water as it reduces down to prevent scorching. This is normal.

Make the Meat Sauce

While meat sauce cooks, make the cheese layer: stir cheeses together in a bowl with basil, parsley and salt &amp; pepper. Set aside.

Cook lasagna noodles 2/3 of the time marked on the package. About 7 minutes or so. Drain and place noodles in a large bowl of cold water.

Make the Cheese Filling

Spread 1/2 cup prepared sauce in the bottom of a lightly greased 9x13 baking dish. Layer in 5-6 noodles across the bottom to completely cover. Spread half of the cheese mixture overtop of the noodles and then one third of the sauce. Top with another layer of noodles, the second half of the cheese mixture and another third of the sauce. Final layer is the last of the noodles and the last of the meat sauce. Sprinkle with 1/4 lb. grated mozzarella cheese. So real quick, here is the order of the layers:Meat Sauce (just a little so the noodles don&#039;t stick to the bottom)NoodlesCheese FillingMeat SauceNoodlesCheese FillingMeat SauceNoodlesMeat SauceMozzarella Cheese

To bake: preheat oven to 375 degrees. Cover lasagna with greased foil. Bake 45 minutes with foil on. Remove foil and bake another 15 minutes or until cheese has browned and everything it hot all the way through. Remove from oven, cover lightly with foil and rest 20-30 minutes before cutting and serving. Sprinkle with dried parsley flakes, cut into squares and serve.

Check out this recipe for easy homemade American lasagna with three layers of lasagna noodles, meat sauce, and lots of creamy ricotta, mozzarella, and parmesan cheeses.  Oh, and it&#039;s make-ahead and freezer-friendly, too. You&#039;re welcome! 

Easy American Lasagna

sweet Italian sausage

jarred marinara sauce (Rao's is excellent)

Italian seasoning (DIVIDED)

parsley flakes

whole fat ricotta cheese

mozzarella cheese (DIVIDED)

parmesan cheese (DIVIDED)

Add the ground beef and sausage to a heavy 5-quart pan. Break up the meat and sausage with a spatula and cook until done, about 6-8 minutes.  Drain off the fat.

Add the jar of marinara sauce and tomato sauce. Add the minced garlic, 2-1/2 teaspoons Italian seasoning, black pepper, and parsley.  Stir well to combine all the ingredients.  Let the sauce slow simmer, covered, for 30 minutes.  After 30 minutes, taste the sauce for flavor.  Add salt if desired, but remember that the cheeses contain salt so I would be careful about adding a lot of salt at this time.

While the sauce is cooking, cook the pasta according to the package directions.   You can skip this step if using no-boil pasta or the refrigerated lasagna.

In a small bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, 1 cup of the mozzarella cheese, 1/4 cup parmesan cheese, and 1/2 teaspoon of Italian seasoning. Divide the mixture into 3 equal parts; it doesn&#x27;t have to be perfect but try to have 3 similar size portions.

Preheat oven to 350F. In a 9x13 casserole dish, spread a very thin layer of meat sauce to the bottom of the dish.Layer 1: Place 3 lasagna noodles in the casserole dish. Spread a layer of ricotta cheese mixture on top of noodles.  Then add a layer of meat mixture (about 1 cup).

Layer 2: Repeat with another layer of three noodles, a layer of ricotta cheese mixture, and 1 cup of meat sauce.

Layer 3: Layer the remaining three lasagna noodles, a layer of ricotta cheese mixture, remaining meat sauce, 1 cup mozzarella cheese, and 1/4 cup parmesan cheese.

Spray a sheet of aluminum foil with non-stick spray and cover the lasagna with the sprayed side down (this prevents the cheese from sticking to the foil).  Bake for 30 minutes.  Remove foil and bake for another 10-15 minutes or until the cheese is nice and browned.  Let lasagna rest for about 10 minutes.  Cut into 12 squares!
