easy calzone

Gram&#39;s Calzone, the delicious alternative to pizza, stuffed with mozzarella &amp; sausage, baked to cheesy perfection. The perfect appetizer or main dish. 

Gram’s Calzone with Sausage and Cheese

store bought pizza dough

sausages

fennel seeds (optional)

salt

paprika

mozzarella cheese (firm)* (divided)

olive oil

Preheat oven to 400F° (200C°) degrees.

In a medium frying pan sauté the sausage, fennel (if using), salt  and paprika until brown, drain off the fat and let cool in a clean bowl.

When cool add to the meat mixture, the raw egg and mozzarella cheese (1¾ cups/200 grams).

Roll the pizza dough to a rectangle (9x10&quot; / 24x26 cm) and place on a lightly greased or parchment paper lined cookie sheet, sprinkle the top of the dough with the sausage cheese mixture. Roll up lengthwise, brush the top with a little olive oil and sprinkle with the remaining shredded mozzarella.

Bake for approximately 15-20 minutes or until browned. Let sit 2- 3 minutes then slice and serve. Enjoy!

My grandma used to make this all the time. She would also make one with spinach and mushrooms. While the bread was baking she would baste it with the leftover grease from cooking the sausage.

Made this  this evening ...made hubby’s with sausage and salami, made mine with prosciutto, pesto sauce i mixed in with the egg and fresh spinach ....we LOVED THEM 
my husband is a calzone fiend , my calzones lack pizazz (I am working on them) but this steomboli he liked...he really liked.  Ha ha haaaaa

I added hot pepper flakes and arugula to the meat mixture, it was a great dinner with coleslaw on the side. I cooked it longer though.
