Mongolian beef is thinly sliced beef marinaded for flavor then stir fried until crisped and served in a sweet and savory sauce with onions and peppers.

Crispy Mongolian Beef Recipe

Cut the beef into thin, bite size pieces, against the grain. 

Combine marinade ingredients in a dish and add beef. Let marinade for at least 30 minutes and up to 2 hours. 

Mix sauce ingredients in a bowl and set aside.

Heat the cooking oil over high heat until it just starts to smoke. 

Drain any excess marinade from beef and lightly dust with cornstarch.  Cook the beef in two or more batches (to prevent lowering the heat of the wok pan) for about 1-2 minutes, or until juices run clear. Remove beef with a slotted spoon and set aside. 

Add onions and peppers and stir fry until translucent, about 1 minute.

Add garlic and ginger and stir fry for about 30 seconds. 

Add the green onions and beef (reserving some green onions for the garnish). 

Add the sauce mixture and cook for about 2 minutes, or until sauce has thickened. 

Garnish with green onions and serve over white rice or crispy noodles.

An easy and lightened up version of Mongolian Beef. This can be prepared ahead of time for your weekly meal prep.

Mongolian Beef Meal Prep

Add beef to a medium bowl. Sprinkle with cornstarch. Toss beef in cornstarch until evenly coated.

In a separate medium bowl, add all sauce ingredient. Mix until evenly blended.&nbsp;

In a large deep nonstick skillet, add oil and bring to medium high heat. When oil is hot, lay beef into skillet in a single layer, making sure none of the pieces overlap. Cook a few minutes until seared and browned. Flip beef and cook a few minutes to sear and brown. Beef should not be fully cooked, only seared on both sides. If you do not have a skillet big enough to fit all your beef in a single layer, cook in smaller batches.

Remove beef and drain excess oil from skillet. I also like to lay the beef on some paper towels to soak up excess oil but this is optional.

Add beef back into skillet. Bring skillet to medium high heat. Add the beef back in and pour in the sauce. Stir fry the beef in the sauce until beef is completely cooked and sauce thickens. The sauce should thicken from the cornstarch on the beef. Once sauce is thickened, turn off heat. Garnish with scallions. When beef is cooled, add to your meal prep containers along with your choice of rice and vegetables.

This Mongolian beef recipe starts with crispy air fried strips of beef. The beef is tender on the inside with a fabulously crispy outside. The sauce is simple to make but packs in loads of sweet and savory flavor.

Air Fryer Mongolian Beef

While the steak is cooking, heat the olive oil in a large deep skillet on the stove. Add the garlic and ginger and cook in the oil for 30 seconds.

Add the soy sauce, water, and brown sugar...

Add the soy sauce, water, and brown sugar to the skillet and stir well. 

Bring to a boil and cook for 6-7...

Bring to a boil and cook for 6-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until sauce has thickened.

Carefully add the cooked beef to the sauce...

Carefully add the cooked beef to the sauce and continue cooking for 1-2 minutes, tossing the beef in the sauce.

Easy Mongolian beef is a rich and flavorful dish and is on the table in 20 minutes. Your favorite takeout made at home. Can also be made in the air fryer.

Easy Mongolian Beef

lb flank steak (thinly sliced against the grain)

1- inch ginger (chopped)

Cover the flank steak with cornstarch, making sure each piece is covered. Set aside.

Heat the canola oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, add the flank steak to the frying pan in a single layer, making sure that the pieces are not touching. Cook on 1-2 minutes per side until each side is browned. Cook in batches until all the flank steak is cooked. Set aside.

Add sliced yellow onion, whites of green onions, garlic, and ginger to the skillet and stir fry for about 3 minutes, until the onions are slightly softened but still have a little crunch. Add soy sauce, water, hoisin sauce, and brown sugar and stir. Add steak back to the pan along with the green parts of the onions. Remove from heat and serve.

This Mongolian Beef can also be made in an Air Fryer. If Air Frying, coat the flank steak in corn starch and place in a preheated air fryer of 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Cook for 15 minutes, shaking the basket halfway. Prepare the sauce on the stove with the onion, garlic, ginger, soy sauce, water, hoisin sauce, and brown sugar.

After multiple tests, we preferred the stovetop version but wanted to share the Air Fryer version for anyone wanting to exclude the frying component of this recipe.

Air fryer Instructions:

Mongolian Beef. Crispy and delicious beef smothered in a sweet, savoury sauce with a very mild kick (that can be omitted if desired)! A wonderful main that pairs well with steamed rice and greens.

Quick & Easy Mongolian Beef

0.75 lbs flank steak (or sub with sirloin steak

cornstarch (or sub with potato starch)

ginger (with

red chili pepper (sliced (optional))

green onion (finely chopped)

vegetable oil (or any neutral tasting oil)

tsp regular soy sauce

tsp black pepper

tsp baking soda

tbsp regular soy sauce

tbsp brown sugar (light or dark brown sugar will work)

tsp sesame oil

tsp Sesame seeds (toasted)

Thinly slice beef against the grain on an angle into 0.75 cm thick pieces and 2 inches in length. Do not slice any thinner. Tip: To thinly slice beef, freeze it for 45-60 minutes so the exterior becomes hardened and use a sharp knife to slice it.

Marinate beef strips with Marinade ingredients and set aside.

In a small bowl, combine Sauce ingredients.

On a large plate or in a large bowl, add cornstarch and generously dredge beef slices into starch until well coated. Transfer coated pieces onto a large plate. Repeat this process until all your beef is coated.

In a large skillet on medium heat, add and heat vegetable oil. Check if oil is hot by inserting a wooden chopstick and look for bubbles.

Once oil is hot, fry beef in a single layer in batches 1 minute on each side until slightly crispy. Important: Immediately spread beef apart to prevent sticking. Fry in 2-3 batches to prevent overcrowding.

Remove cooked beef from oil and set aside on a large plate or baking tray lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil. Discard excess oil leaving 1 tsp in the pan.

Over low heat, sauté ginger, garlic, red chili for 10 seconds.

Pour in sauce to reduce and thicken.

Once thick, add beef and mix to coat evenly. Garnish with green onions.

Remove off heat. Optionally garnish with sesame seeds. Enjoy!
