This homemade Naan Bread is crispy on the outside &amp; chewy on the inside!

water

active dry yeast (1 package)

sugar

flour

vegetable oil

buttermilk

salt

In the bowl of a stand mixture*, mix together warm water, yeast, and sugar. Rest for 3-5 minutes until the yeast is foamy.

Add in flour, oil, buttermilk, egg &amp; salt and mix with dough hook on low speed to combine, then on the second speed for 5 minutes. Dough will be pillowy soft and not sticky but may be slightly tacky.

Remove dough hook and cover with a towel for 1-1 ½ hours, until dough has doubled in size.

Divide dough into 8 pieces. Thinly roll each piece into a rough circle shape about 4-5”.

Heat a drizzle of oil in a skillet on medium high. Add one naan and cook until golden brown on one side and then flip and cook until golden brown (about 2-3 minutes on each side).

Add oil for each naan.

This Indian Naan Bread recipe is incredibly easy to make at home and the result is a soft and delicious Indian bread that you can have as a side to many meals.

Easy Indian Naan Bread Recipe

c. all-purpose flour

instant yeast

c. milk

c. plain Greek yogurt

cardamom

turmeric

Tbsp. melted Ghee or butter

Pour the milk into a liquid measuring cup, whisk in the Greek yogurt, and heat in the microwave until warm to the touch (about 110 degrees F). Pour the warm milk into a large bowl or the bowl of an electric stand mixer. Add the sugar, instant yeast, salt, cardamom, turmeric, and 2 1/2 cups of the flour.

Mix well with a wooden spoon or the paddle attachment on your stand mixer. Continue adding flour gradually in small amounts, until a soft dough is formed that cleans the sides of the bowl (it will still be sticky). Knead the dough using the dough attachment on your stand mixer, or by hand until it is smooth and elastic, about 3-5 minutes in the mixer or 10 minutes by hand.

Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl and let it rest at room temperature, covered lightly, for about 2 hours.

After the dough has rested, turn it onto a lightly floured surface and divide the dough into 12 equal pieces, rounding each into a ball shape. The dough will still be a little sticky, but you won't have too much trouble forming it into balls.

Cover the pieces with a towel and let them rest for 30 minutes. While the dough rests, preheat your oven to 500 degrees Fahrenheit and place a pizza stone or large cast iron pan on the bottom rack of the oven.

Once the dough has rested for a half hour, one by one, roll each piece into a circle about 6 inches wide. Open up the oven and lay the circle of dough on the hot pizza stone. Spritz the top of the dough with a little water or vegetable oil. Close the oven and bake the naan for about 2-3 minutes, until it is lightly puffed and brown spots begin to appear on the bottom. Turn the naan using tongs and return to oven for another 2 minutes or so.

Remove the naan from the oven and place on a cooling rack or large plate. Brush lightly with Ghee or melted butter. Stack the hot naan on top of each other as it comes out of the oven to help keep the pieces warm.

Fluffy, buttery, and perfectly chewy, this homemade Naan Bread recipe comes together quickly and easily with only a few simple ingredients.

water (105-110F (120 milliliters))

dry yeast ((2¼ teaspoons, 0.25-oz.))

all-purpose flour (plus additional for dusting (300 grams))

plain yogurt ((80 milliliters))

olive oil

butter (melted (76 grams))

garlic (minced (optional))

In a small bowl, stir together the warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let stand at room temperature, until foamy, about 5 to 10 minutes.

In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook, stir together flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture, yogurt, and oil. Mix on low speed until just combined, scraping down sides of bowl as needed. Increase mixer speed to medium. Knead until dough becomes smooth, about 8 to 10 minutes. Place in a large greased bowl, cover, let rise in a warm, draft-free place, until doubled in size, about 1 hour.

Punch down the risen dough. Divide into 8 equal pieces and shape into balls. On a lightly floured surface, roll each into roughly 8-inch long ovals.  (If you’re limited on counter space, stack rolled dough on a baking sheet lined with parchment or wax paper with a piece of paper between each dough piece.)

Heat a 12-inch cast-iron skillet over medium heat. Working with one piece at a time, spray the skillet with cooking spray and add a rolled dough to the hot skillet. Cook, until the dough starts to puff and is golden brown on the bottom, about 1 to 2 minutes. Flip and cook until golden brown, another 1 to 2 minutes. Remove from the skillet and cover with a tea towel to keep warm.  Repeat with remaining dough, coating the pan with cooking spray before adding the dough each time.

In a small bowl, stir together melted butter and garlic, if using. Brush both sides of each naan with garlic butter. Serve warm.
