Instant Pot Chickpeas

(225 grams) dried chickpeas (garbanzo beans)

whole head (40 grams) garlic (, crushed)

bay leaves

(212 grams) onion (, halved)

salt

(1L) water stock

Optional Step - Soak Chickpeas Overnight: Place 1 cup (225g) dried chickpeas and 1 tbsp (17g) fine table salt in a large container. Pour 4 cups (1L) cold water in the large container, then give it a few stirs. Allow chickpeas to soak overnight for at least 8 - 16 hours. *Pro Tip: If your house is very warm, place the large container in the fridge to avoid fermentation.

Rinse Chickpeas: Rinse chickpeas under cold water, then pick out any stones or debris. Drain chickpeas well.

Pressure Cook Chickpeas: Add 1 cup (225g) unsoaked chickpeas or all of the soaked chickpeas, 2 bay leaves, 1 whole head (40g) garlic, and 1 halved (212g) onion to the Instant Pot. Adding Salt:-For Unsoaked Chickpeas - add in 1 ½ tsp (9g) fine salt.-For Soaked Chickpeas - add in 1 tsp (6g) fine salt.Pour in 4 cups (1L) cold water or unsalted chicken stock, then give it a quick mix. With Venting Knob in Venting Position, close the lid, then turn Venting Knob to Sealing Position.Pressure Cooking Method:-For Unsoaked Chickpeas - High Pressure 42 minutes (tender with a bit of chew) or 60 minutes (tender soft) + Natural Release 20 minutes-For Soaked Chickpeas - High Pressure 5 minutes (tender &amp; creamy) + Natural Release 20 minutesAfter 20 minutes, release remaining pressure, then open the lid.

Serve Instant Pot Chickpeas: Remove &amp; discard onions and bay leaves. Taste the chickpeas to ensure they are fully cooked. Add more seasoning if necessary. Drain the chickpeas. Then, serve the chickpeas as a tasty side dish. Enjoy!~ :)

Add chickpeas and baking soda to a bowl and cover with cool water by about 3 inches (ensuring they’re well submerged). Soak overnight, or for at least 6-8 hours at room temperature.

Drain and rinse chickpeas well, then add to Instant Pot and cover with just enough water to submerge (as original recipe is written, we found 1 cup soaked chickpeas to require ~2 - 2 ¼ cups water).

For more flavor, add onion, garlic, oil, salt, and pepper.

Pressure cook on high for 15 minutes, or up to 17-18 minutes for super buttery, tender chickpeas. For chickpeas with some bite, try 13-14 minutes. NOTE: If you soaked your chickpeas for longer than 8 hours (for instance, overnight or 10+ hours), you can likely cook your chickpeas even faster (anywhere from 12-14 minutes).

Quick release* (always being careful of the steam). We prefer picking out the onion, garlic, and herbs before serving. Drain off any excess cooking liquid as well. You can also reserve the cooking liquid as it&#039;s quite flavorful and can be added to soups and stews (though we don&#039;t believe it would be effective for using as aquafaba).

These beans are ready to enjoy! We find them especially well suited for things like our Chickpea Buddha Bowl, Hummus From Scratch, or 1-Pot Curried Chickpea Soup! Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator up to 4-5 days, or in the freezer for up to 1 month.

Instant Pot Beans. Save money by cooking dry beans in the pressure cooker. Here is your fail proof recipe to cook the perfect dried beans everytime.  Instant Pot Black Beans, Instant Pot Chickpeas and Instant Pot Kidney Beans. 

Instant Pot Beans

black beans / kidney beans / chickpeas

1: 3 bean to water ratio

Dried 20-25 minutes high pressure

Soaked 6-8 minutes high pressure 

Natural pressure release

Dried 35-40 minutes high pressure

Soaked 10-15 minutes high pressure 

Soaked 7-8 minutes high pressure 

These Instant Pot chickpeas are cheaper and taste better than canned! Cooking garbanzo beans is the ideal task for a pressure cooker. Updated for reliability December 2020.

Instant Pot Chickpeas (Garbanzo Beans)

Night or day before (recommended)

Place the chickpeas in the Instant Pot and cover with the water. Soak 10 to 12 hours, then drain. This makes the most tender chickpeas that are most evenly cooked (see notes below*).

Place the chickpeas into Instant Pot and cover with water by 1 inch (about 6 cups). Add the kosher salt. Lock the lid. Place the pressure release handle (vent) in the &#8220;Sealing&#8221; position.

Cook on high pressure 23 minutes (soaked) or 35 minutes (unsoaked*)

Press the Pressure Cook button, making sure the &#8220;High Pressure&#8221; setting is selected, and set the time. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes for the pot to &#8220;preheat&#8221; and come up to pressure before it starts cooking. Wait while the Instant Pot cooks. (Note: During cooking, avoid touching the metal part of the lid.)

Natural release for 20 minutes

After the Instant Pot beeps, wait for another 20 minutes to let the Instant Pot naturally release pressure. (Tip: We set a timer for this part so we don&#8217;t forget!) Then vent any remaining steam by moving the vent to &#8220;Venting&#8221;, covering your hand with a towel or hot pad. Never put your hands or face near the vent when releasing steam. (The pressure indicator in the lid may drop on its own after 10 minutes, meaning that there is no remaining steam in the pot.)

Open the lid and taste one chickpea to see if it is tender. Some chickpea brands and pressure cooker brands have require longer cook times. If it&#8217;s not tender, cook a few more minutes on high pressure and do a quick release. Once cooked, drain and use immediately, store in the refrigerator for 4 to 5 days, or freeze indefinitely. We freeze the drained chickpeas in sealable containers in 1.5 cup servings, which equals 1 15-ounce can.

Instant Pot Chickpeas are faster than stovetop cooking and you don’t have to pre-soak them overnight. Cook the chickpeas to your desired doneness depending on how you are using them (chewy and tender for salad, or soft and creamy for hummus).

Instant Pot Chickpeas (No Soaking Required)

lb dried chickpeas (2 cups)

tsp fine sea salt (optional)

Rinse and chickpeas and remove any debris then drain well.

Transfer chickpeas to a 6-quart instant pot and add 6 cups water or enough to cover the chickpeas by 1-inch of water. Add 1 tsp salt.

For slightly lightly chewy chickpeas (used for salad): Cook on high pressure for 45 minutes followed by a 10 minute natural pressure release.

For Soft and Tender Chickpeas (used for hummus): Pressure cook on high pressure for 50 minutes followed by a 15 minute natural pressure release.*

How do you cook chickpeas easy and quick (and without soaking)? The answer is simple , instant pot chickpeas is the solution! Use your instant pot to turn dried chickpeas to perfectly cooked beans that you can use in any dish of your choice in under 60 minutes.  Canned chickpeas – BE GONE!

chickpeas (2 ¼ cups)

If you think the chickpeas you have isn’t clean, clean it. Pick any stones or debris it might have, and rinse it. I skipped rinsing.

Add chickpeas to your pot. Pour in water.Jo’s Tip: There is also another reason why I don’t add salt while cooking dried beans. Salt interferes with the cooking of dried beans. You might end up with texture not exactly what you were hoping for.Chickpeas can absorb salt only when it’s softened. Do my suggestion; do not add salt while cooking dried beans.

Cover lid tight with pressure valve in SEALING position.

Pressure cook for 20-25 minutes if you want al-dente texture. Cook for 40-50 minutes for softer texture.

After cooking time, allow natural pressure release for 20 minutes for al-dente, and full pressure release for softer texture.

Open pot, use cooked chickpeas in your favorite dish. You can use the liquid in which chickpeas were cooked in curries, soup or even while blending hummus.

No-Soak Method (cooking dried beans directly):

Overnight soaking - Soak chickpeas in little more than double the amount of water in a large bowl. Use a big bowl, as chickpeas will expand. It’s recommended to soak chickpeas for 8 to 10 hours, ideally overnight.

Rinse off soaked chickpeas.

Add it to instant pot. Pour water. Cover lid tight with pressure valve in SEALING position.

Pressure cook for 12-15 minutes. 12 minute chickpeas will still have a slight crisp to it. 15 minutes will give softer chickpeas texture close to canned chickpeas.
