Nasi Goreng (Indonesian Fried Rice) loaded up with fresh veggies! Add chicken, shrimp or eggs, or keep it vegan with Tofu! Easy tasty recipe! Vegan-adaptable and gluten-free.

Nasi Goreng (Indonesian Fried Rice)

crispy tofu, pan-seared chicken

oil, divided

shallots (or 1/2 an onion), chopped

garlic cloves, rough chopped

carrot (small dice!)

red bell pepper, chopped

mushrooms

beans

eggs, whisked salt (optional)

soy sauce, more to taste (see notes) Or GF Liquid Aminos

maple syrup, honey or palm sugar

sesame oil

scallions

shrimp

In an extra large skillet or wok, pan-sear your choice of protien in oil with a little salt, pepper and chili flakes until golden and cooked through, set aside.

In the same skillet, add 1-2 tablespoons oil and saute shallots, garlic, mushrooms, bell pepper and carrots over medium heat until the carrots are tender, about 7-8 minutes. Season with salt. Toss in the fresh peas at the end.

At the same time, while veggies are cooking, whisk, salt and scramble the eggs in a separate oiled pan, breaking the cooked apart into little pieces, set aside. (Or feel free to top with sunny side eggs after serving.)

Once the veggies are tender, scoot them over to one side of the pan. Add a litte more oil to the bare pan and add the rice. Turn heat up and fry for 3-4 minutes, gettin it a little crispy. Combine rice with the veggies.

Drizzle with the soy sauce and maple syrup and mix well. Mix in the scrambled eggs and meat/shrimp/tofu if using.  Taste and season with a drizzle of sesame oil, chili flakes, salt and pepper if needed. Stir in the scallions right before serving.

Divide among bowls and serve with some of the optional garnishes,  lime &amp; chile paste.

My husband's comment:  this is the best fried rice I've ever had.  :)  Enough said!!! I used chicken for the protein, thawed green peas, a nice dose of sambal olek, garnished with crushed peanuts.  Delicious!

It's only that in name only. Too much garbage in this.

We've tried "fried rice"recipes before but this is the first time we've seen the direction to use left over rice. We made extra last night just so that we could try this tonight and we weren't disappointed.
The only thing we will do differently next time is chop up a chilli toss that through.

Recipe video above. A traditional Indonesian fried rice recipe which is often served with a fried egg for a protein boost to make it a meal, but I usually serve it as a side dish. The magic ingredient in this is kecap manis, a sweet soy sauce which is available in large supermarkets and of course in Asian stores. Feel free to swap out the chicken for other proteins! Shrimp/prawns, tofu, beef and pork are all great alternatives.

white rice (, day old, cold (Note 3))

green onion (, sliced)

shallots (, store bought (optional) (Note 3))

Lime wedges

Heat oil in a large skillet or wok over high heat.

Add chilli and garlic, stir for 10 seconds.

Add onion, cook for 1 minute.

Add chicken, cook until it mostly turns white, then add 1 tbsp kecap manis and cook for a further 1 minute or until chicken is mostly cooked through and a bit caramelised.

Add rice, 2 tbsp kecap manis and shrimp paste, if using. Cook, stirring constantly, for 2 minutes until sauce reduces down and rice grains start to caramelise (key for flavour!).

Serve, garnished with garnishes of choice (green onions, red chilli, fried shallots).

Serve as a side for Asian main dishes or as part of a &nbsp;large spread, Asian or not! :) See in post for suggestions.

Make it a meal - traditional Indonesian style!: Serve with a fried egg sunny side up (runny yolk!), tomato wedges and slices of cucumber on the side.

Inspired by my favorite dish, Nasi Goreng, this quick take on avocado toast is the BEST for a quick savory breakfast or lunch (or even a snack!) Plus it comes together in five minutes, you just can&#039;t beat it!

Sweet, Spicy and Oh-so-Umami Avocado Toast

bread of choice (toasted)

avocado (ripened)

tbsp kecap manis

tbsp sambal oelek

scallions (finely chopped)

In a pot of boiling water, boil the egg to your preferred level (I have tips on how to do this in the blog post above!)

Mash up the avocado and add it to the top of your toast.

In a separate dish, mix together the nasi goreng and sambal oelek. Spread this evenly over the avocado.

Top with the sliced scallions, then the egg, then the chili oil.

Serve immediately!

Ready in 30 minutes, this Indonesian fried rice is packed with pork fillet, prawns and vegies, and makes for a family-friendly dinner.

medium free-range eggs,

garlic clove, finely chopped

½ red pepper, finely chopped

asparagus spears,

cooked rice,

Vegetable oil

Finely chopped spring onion

For the sauce

tsp sambal (see Tips below)

tomato purée

½ tbsp light soy sauce

tbsp kecap manis (sweet soy sauce)

½ tsp sesame oil

Mix the sauce ingredients in a small bowl and season.

Build your Wok Clock*: start at 12 o’clock with the eggs, then the garlic, red pepper, asparagus, rice and lastly the sauce.

Heat 2 tbsp vegetable oil in your wok over a high heat. Once smoking hot, pour the eggs into the oil and allow to bubble up before breaking them up and scrambling. Push the eggs to the back of the wok, then add the garlic, red pepper and asparagus, stir-frying for 30 seconds between each new ingredient.

Push all the veg to the back of the wok, add ½ tbsp vegetable oil and bring to smoking point before adding the rice. Break up any clumps of rice by pushing down on them against the wok with a spatula or ladle. Fold the vegetables and egg into the rice to combine and stir-fry for 1-2 minutes, then pour the sauce over the rice and stir-fry for 2 minutes more. Some of the rice should begin to crisp up for texture and flavour. Garnish with spring onion and serve.

Fast Nasi Goreng - Indonesian Fried Rice

Heat vegetable oil in a large wok or frying pan over high heat.

Add shredded chicken and sambal chilli and fry for a minute or so. Remove from pan.

Add in your shallots, garlic, belacan (or fish sauce) and salt, frying for 30 seconds or so. Then finally, drizzle in your kecap manis.

Add the sambal chicken back into the wok, along with the cabbage and cooked rice. Mix until combined with the sauce.

Bring heat down to low-medium. Make a hole in the middle of rice and crack an egg. Scramble it with spatula and allow to cook mostly through for around a minute, then chop it up and mix it through the rice.

Switch off your heat and serve with garnishes such as a fried egg, tomato, cucumber or krupuk.

Squeeze extra kecap manis or sriracha over the dish for extra flavour and top with optional chopped spring onion.

Nasi Goreng

garlic (minced)

eggs (lightly beaten)

salt and pepper (to taste)

green onions (chopped)

Cook the onion and garlic.

In a large wok or frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over high heat. Add the garlic and onion and stir-fry for 1-2 minutes until fragrant and lightly browned. Add the red chili peppers and shrimp paste and stir-fry for another 1-2 minutes.

Cook chicken and rice.

Add the diced chicken to the pan and cook until it&#39;s no longer pink.  Add the cooked rice and stir-fry for 5-7 minutes until heated through and lightly browned.

Add flavor.

Add the sweet soy sauce, fish sauce, and ketchup and stir-fry for another minute. Add the mixed vegetables and stir-fry for another 2-3 minutes until heated through.

Scramble eggs.

Push the rice mixture to one side of the wok or pan and pour the beaten eggs onto the other side. Scramble the eggs until they are cooked through, then mix them into the rice mixture.

Season and garnish.

Season with salt and pepper. Garnish with chopped green onions and serve hot.

If you don't have leftover rice, then make some rice according to package directions.

Start by making kecap manis or sweet soy sauce.  In a small saucepan combine the soy sauce and brown sugar over medium heat.  When the mixture starts to boil, turn the heat down to medium low and simmer for about 15 minutes until reduced, stirring frequently.  Set aside.

In a medium bowl, add two of the eggs and the sesame oil and beat with a fork for one minute.&nbsp; Set aside.

Next make the shrimp: Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium heat with 1 tablespoon of the vegetable oil.&nbsp; Add the shrimp, cover, and cook for about minutes.&nbsp; Remove cover, stir, and then cook for another minute or two until the shrimp is cooked through.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Remove the skillet from the heat and add 2 tablespoons of the soy sauce mixture. Place the shrimp in a bowl, wipe out the skillet with a paper towel, and return the pan back to the burner.

Add the remaining tablespoon of vegetable oil and heat the skillet over medium heat.&nbsp; Add the finely chopped onion and saute for 5 minutes.&nbsp; Then add the ginger, garlic, and sambal oelek.&nbsp; Mix for another minute.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Add the beaten eggs to the pan and cook for 30 seconds, gently scraping up the egg from the bottom of the pan. Then add the rice and the remaining soy sauce mixture to the skillet.&nbsp; Break up the rice and cook for about four minutes until the rice is heated through and the soy sauce mixture is evenly dispersed. Add the shrimp to the rice and heat through. Turn off heat and keep warm on the burner.

Cook the remaining four eggs in a nonstick skillet to desired doneness - often nasi goreng is served with a sunny-side up&nbsp;egg.

Plate the rice and shrimp with the egg and add scallions, cherry tomatoes, and cucumbers.&nbsp; Serve with lime wedges and scallions.
