These breaded tofu cubes are coated in vegan batter and crispy seasoned panko breadcrumbs, then pan-fried until crunchy and perfectly golden.

Panko Tofu

extra firm tofu (pressed and cubed)

all-purpose flour

cornstarch

plant milk

water

panko breadcrumbs

salt

ground pepper

italian seasoning

Drain the tofu cube and remove it from its packaging. Wrap it in paper towel and place it under a heavy object, like a cast iron pan. Let it sit for 15-20 minutes.

Unwrap the tofu and cut it into 1-inch cubes. Set aside.

Heat about a centimeter of oil in a frying pan.

In a medium size dish, Whick together the flour, cornstarch, plant milk, and water. You should see tiny bubbles throughout the batter.

In another medium size dish, mix together the Panko breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, Italian seasoning and nutritional yeast.

With one hand, coat a cube of tofu in the batter and place it in the breadcrumb dish. With your other hand, coat the cube with the breadcrumbs. Place on a plate. or baking tray.

Using tongs, place 6-8 tofu cubes in the hot oil. Be careful not to overcrowd the pan.

Cook for 3 minutes, then flip. Cook for another 3 minutes or until golden brown.

Remove the tofu from the hot oil and place it on a plate lined with paper towel. Sprinkle a pinch of salt over the cooked tofu cubes. Repeat with the remaining tofu cubes.

Serve with rice, as part of a grain bowl, or enjoy as is.

Making this panko tofu is the easiest way to make tofu in my opinion. It's so simple yet flavourful and takes about 25 minutes from start to finish. It's great on its own with some sauce but it's even better served with rice or noodles.

How to make easy panko breaded tofu

An easy recipe for panko crusted tofu and a yummy black vinegar dipping sauce to go with it.

Panko Tofu with Black Vinegar Sake Dipping Sauce

block firm tofu (cut into 1 inch pieces)

tbsp pepper

tbsp salt

garlic powder

eggs

vegetable oil

tbsp green onions (minced)

soy sauce

tbsp sesame oil

tbsp black vinegar

tbsp Just Date Syrup (optional)

sake

tbsp honey

tsp corn starch

Mix together the soy sauce, sesame oil, black vinegar, Just Date Syrup, sake, honey, corn starch, and water in a small sauce pan. Heat over low heat for 1-2 minutes to burn off the alcohol. You can tell the alcohol has been burned off if you can&#039;t smell it anymore.

Put 2 paper towels on a baking sheet. Put the tofu on top and cover with 2 more paper towels. Place a baking sheet on top to press all the water out of the tofu. Let it sit for 30 minutes.

Mix the panko breadcrumbs, pepper, and salt in a large bowl. Beat the eggs in another bowl. Dip the tofu first in the eggs and then cover with panko breadcrumbs. Set aside.

Heat vegetable oil over medium high heat until it reaches 300 degrees F. Use a deep fry thermometer to help you measure the temperature of the oil.

Fry the tofu in batches - about a quarter of the batch of tofu at a time. After frying, place them on paper towels to absorb the excess oil.

Sprinkle green onions on top for garnish.

I had a pound of ground Turkey meat and combined the tofu and Turkey to make Tofurkey-type katsu patties. Instead of using 2 Tbsp of Salt, I only used to half a tablespoon. For the sauce I accidentally forgot the corn starch but the sauce still came out yummy. 7 y/o twins and spouse enjoyed it. Ate with a side of rice and steamed veggies.
