Shakshuka is a super flavorful dish with eggs poached in a tomato sauce with peppers, onion, garlic, and delicious spices. The perfect breakfast or brunch.

tbsp extra virgin olive oil

red bell pepper, seeded and sliced longways

yellow onion, chopped (1/3 cup)

tsp kosher salt

Preheat oven to 375 degrees

In a cast iron skillet over medium heat, add 3 tbsp of olive oil, chopped onions, and red bell pepper. Sauté for 20 minutes until peppers soften. Add the spices: dark chili powder, cumin, paprika, oregano, salt, black pepper. Add the sliced garlic and sauté for 1-2 minutes until garlic is fragrant. Add the crushed tomatoes and lower the heat to simmer. Stir and allow sauce to simmer for 10 minutes.

Create 4 small wells in the tomato sauce and crack the eggs into the wells. Place skillet into the oven and bake the eggs for 8-10 minutes until the eggs are cooked to your liking (they will continue to cook when you remove from the oven so don't overcook).

Remove from the oven and top with crumbled...

Remove from the oven and top with crumbled cheese and herb garnish of parsley or cilantro. Serve with toasted bread or pita to scoop up all the delicious sauces.

This Vegan Shakshuka (or Shakshouka) is a quick and easy dish takes less than 45 minutes and is a flavourful and delicious breakfast or brunch! Vegan tofu eggs are cooked in flavourful tomato sauce and is sure to be a crowd pleaser!

Vegan Shakshuka Recipe

oz diced tomatoes (fresh

red pepper flakes (or more)

garlic (peeled and chopped finely)

vegan feta cheese

lb block of extra firm tofu (pressed

garlic powder

onion powder

nutritional yeast

vegan milk

½ teaspoon kala namak

In your Blacklock 4 Quart Deep Skillet, over medium high heat, heat the oil.

Add the onions and bell peppers and stir. Cook for about 5 to 7 minutes until translucent and a bit softer.

While this is cooking, make the tofu egg mixture. Add the tofu, nutritional yeast, kala namak, garlic powder, onion powder, milk and blend. Taste and adjust seasonings if necessary. Set aside until needed.

Add the garlic and stir for about 2 minutes until fragrant.

Add the tomato sauce, the cumin, the red pepper flakes and a pinch of salt and ground black pepper. Reduce the heat to medium and stir everything together. Cover your Blacklock 4 Quart Deep Skillet with the lid, and cook for another 2 minutes.

Remove the lid, make some small wells, and scoop in your tofu egg mixture. I like to do about 5 on the outside areas, and one in the middle.

Bring heat to medium (ensure it’s simmering) and cover your Deep Skillet with the lid. Cook the shakshuka for 5 minutes with the lid on to cook through, and then five to 8 minutes with the lid off, allowing all the excess liquid to escape until the tofu egg mixture is set.

Remove from heat and allow to cool until set (around 5 minutes at least as it&#039;ll be very hot). Top with vegan feta and chopped parsley. Serve with pita bread or any kind of crusty bread, and enjoy!

This healthy no-bake stovetop shakshuka is so easy to make! No oven required, this recipe is ready in under 30 mins. Vegetarian, gluten-free, and packed with vegetables!

Easy Stovetop Shakshuka (No Oven)

red bell pepper, chopped

Heat a large pan over medium. Add olive oil and sauté chopped bell pepper for ~5 minutes.

Add spinach to the pan, sautéing for about 1 minute until slightly wilted. 

Add tomato sauce, thyme, oregano, garlic powder, salt, and pepper, adjusting for taste. Cook for ~3 minutes, stirring regularly.

Using the back of a spoon or spatula, make space in the sauce mixture to crack the eggs into. Next, sprinkle with crumbled cheese and cover pan with a lid. 

Let cook until egg whites are done (around 5-10 minutes), making sure not to overcook (you want the yolks to still be soft). NOTE: Keep an eye on the eggs at this point, as timing will differ depending on how deep your pan is, how hot your oven is, etc.

Remove pan from heat, and sprinkle with fresh basil, cracked pepper, and an extra drizzle of olive oil. Enjoy hot and serve with a side of freshly toasted sourdough!

Easy Shakshuka (with Fresh or Canned Tomatoes)

1/4-1/2 tsp red pepper flakes

Heat a large rimmed skillet with a lid over medium heat. Add the olive oil and onion and sauté until just translucent, about 2 minutes. Add the garlic, red bell pepper, and salt. Sauté for 4-5 minutes, stirring frequently, until softened and fragrant.

Add the tomato paste, cumin, paprika, and red pepper flakes and cook for 1 minute, until fragrant. Add the tomatoes and stir well to combine. Bring to a light simmer, cover, and cook for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the tomatoes are well broken down, the bell pepper is softened, and the flavors have developed. Taste and adjust as needed, adding more cumin for smokiness, red pepper flakes for heat, or salt for overall flavor.

Use the back of a spoon to make four wells in the tomato mixture, then gently crack an egg into each well. Sprinkle the eggs with salt and cover the pan. Cook for 4-6 minutes, depending on how you like your eggs. For over-hard eggs, cook for 8 minutes.

Turn off the heat, sprinkle with basil or parsley and black pepper (all optional), and serve! Pairs well with toasted bread, grilled cheese sandwiches, or roasted potatoes.

Best when fresh. The sauce alone will keep in the refrigerator for 3-4 days or in the freezer for up to 1 month. For best texture and taste, we don’t recommend refrigerating or freezing with the eggs.

Shakshuka (also spelled shakshouka) is a dish consisting of poached eggs cooked over a spiced tomato and pepper-based sauce. Its exact origin is hotly debated, but the dish is believed to have originated in Northwest Africa in a region called Maghreb that includes Algeria, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia, and other countries.

Its popularity later spread to Israel where it was embraced as a hearty, inexpensive, and simple dish. In Jewish culture, it’s made for breakfast using the leftover tomato stew from the Sabbath dinner.

This is an easy, dairy-free version using fresh tomatoes, with an option to use canned if preferred!

Easy Shakshuka Recipe

Preheat oven to 375F.

In a large skillet (I use cast iron), heat the oil over medium-low. Add the onion and  peppers. Cook gently until soft, about 15 to 20 minutes. Add garlic and cook 1 to 2 minutes, just until tender. Stir in the cayenne, cumin, paprika, and dash of nutmeg and cook for 1 minute. Pour in the can of tomatoes and season with salt and pepper. Simmer until the tomatoes and the juices have thickened, about 10 minutes. Taste and add more salt and pepper if needed.

Make 6 small wells in the top of the tomato mixture. Gently crack eggs into the wells. Transfer the skillet to the oven and bake until eggs are just set, 7 to 10 minutes. Sprinkle with feta and cilantro and serve directly out of the pan.

Easy Vegan Shakshuka

400-g tin chopped tomatoes (7 oz)

cherry tomatoes (7 oz)

kale (roughly chopped)

dairy-free yogurt (e.g. coconut yogurt)

bread

If you&#39;d like to serve your Vegan Shakshuka with vegan scrambled eggs, then begin with the recipe you can find here. Once one, place them aside for later use. If you&#39;re leaving out the &#39;eggy&#39; part of this dish, skip ahead to step 2.

Heat a splash of olive oil n a large frying pan, and sauté your onions until translucent. Add the crushed garlic and cook for 1 minute before adding the celery and red pepper. Cook for 3 minutes to soften and stir regularly,.

Add in the chopped tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, tomato paste and tomato relish (optional). Sprinkle the spices over the top and stir to combine. Reduce to low/medium heat and let it simmer for 5 minutes.

Add in the kale (and vegan scrambled eggs), then stir to combine and serve warm with parsley, fresh yogurt and toasted bread.

What is shakshuka?
Shakshuka (also spelled shakshouka or chakchouka) is a dish of eggs poached in a sauce of tomatoes, olive oil, peppers, onion, and garlic, and commonly spiced with cumin, paprika, cayenne pepper, and nutmeg. The dish has existed in Mediterranean cultures for centuries.

What you’ll need for this Easy Vegan Shakshuka

The basics:
Onion & garlic – finely diced and crushed. A great start to this recipe that makes your kitchen smell fantastic and adds to the wonderful taste of your shakshuka!

The Vegetables
Two of my go-tos for a shakshuka are celery and red pepper – both finely diced to be deliciously incorporated in the recipe.

The seasoning
Keep it simple and season to taste with black pepper,  smoked paprika and sea salt.

Tomato paste
Helps thickening up the tomato base of the dish, without adding any nasties. Go for organic tomato paste for the best flavour.

Tomato relish (optional)
A delicious, but optional addition! I think it adds a whole new flavour dimension to the Shakshuka and it’s simply delicious. One of my favourites to add is the Spicy Tomato Relish by Rubies in the Rubble.

Chopped tomatoes
The delicious tomato base for this recipe! Go for organic to get the best tasting chopped tomatoes and ensure they don’t contain any added sugar or salt, but purely tomatoes.

Cherry tomatoes
My favourites to use in this dish! I simply love adding tinned cherry tomatoes and their natural sweetness! In this Vegan Shakshuka, they also add a great bite to the dish! If you don’t have any to hand, you can swap them out for more chopped tomatoes or plum tomatoes

Kale
Adding some healthy greens into the dish! You can also add spinach if you prefer, both make really healthy and delicious additions. Add them towards the end of the cooking process as they will only need a short moment to wilt.

➡️ What to serve with this vegan Shakshuka
There are a whole bunch of topping and sides that I love to serve with my Easy Vegan Shakshuka!

Yogurt: Firstly a good dollop of plain vegan yogurt is a must! It adds such a wonderful fresh taste and creaminess to the shakshuka and it’s simply delicious. Definitely give this a go!

Parsley: On the fresh herb side, parsley is your gal! Works perfectly alongside the flavours of the shakshuka – and also adds a great touch of colour to the dish, making it look even more fabulous.

Freshly toasted bread: So you can easily scoop up every last bit of this delicious shakshuka, yum!

Vegan Scrambled Eggs: Taking this vegan shakshuka to the next level! I like to start this dish with my tofu-free Vegan Scrambled Egg recipe, then remove it from the pan, and add it back into the shakshuka towards the end of the cooking process. Delicious eggy-ness and adding a delicious texture!
