Black Folks Southern Cabbage Recipe

cabbage (3-4 pound cabbage, shredded)

onion (chopped)

chicken broth

apple cider vinegar

butter (unsalted

½ teaspoon Old Bay seasoning (or Cajun seasoning)

garlic powder

red pepper flakes

salt

black pepper

Cut out the cabbage’s core and use a food processor or a knife to shred the cabbage leaves. (I remove the outer layer of cabbage leaves first and discard them before chopping.)

Add the shredded cabbage and all the ingredients (onion, chicken apple cider vinegar, butter, Old Bay or Cajun seasoning, garlic powder, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper) into the Instant Pot stainless steel inner pot.

Sink the chopped cabbage as much as you can into the liquid broth.

Close the Instant Pot lid (make sure the valve is up – in the position for sealing) and pressure cook on high for 4 minutes.

When the cooking time is finished, allow a natural pressure release for at least 4 minutes.

To open the Instant Pot lid, move the valve to ‘venting’ and manually release any remaining pressure, if applicable.

Soul Food Cabbage Recipes | Black Folks Southern Cabbage

This Southern Cooked Cabbage Recipe is made on the stove using butter, bacon or sausage, and garlic for immense flavor. This is the best soul food dish to serve for weeknight meals, holidays, or Sunday dinners.

Southern Cooked Cabbage Recipe

cabbage (Mine weighed about 3 pounds)

unsalted butter

sausage

garlic

broth (Chicken, beef,

salt and pepper

Slice the cabbage in half to create 2 portions. Slice the core/stem out of both. Then slice each piece in half. You should have 4 smaller chunks of cabbage. From there, slice each into smaller strips.

Place a Dutch oven or large pot on medium-high heat.

Add the butter and sliced sausage. Cook for 3-4 minutes until both sides are cooked through.

Add in the garlic and stir.

Add the sliced cabbage and broth. The cabbage will take up most of the room of the pot. It will wilt down when it cooks.

Cover the pot and reduce the heat to low. Cook for 15-30 minutes. The cook time will vary based on how tender you like your cabbage. I like mine really tender, but not mushy. This takes 25-30 minutes. If you like for the cabbage to have some firmness and a bite, you can cook it for 15 minutes. Check in on it often (if it’s your first time making the recipe) and adjust accordingly.

Open the pot. Season with salt and pepper. Taste repeatedly and adjust as necessary. Serve when cool.

Southern Fried Cabbage

bacon (cooked crisp)

bacon drippings

butter

onion

sweet green pepper

cabbage

Cajun seasoning ((optional))

paprika

Cook bacon until crisp, remove from pan and drain on paper towel. Set bacon aside. Remove excess bacon drippings from pan reserving 2 tablespoons. Melt 2 tablespoons of butter into the bacon drippings in your pan

Add chopped onion, peppers, minced garlic, chopped cabbage, salt, pepper, Cajun seasoning and chicken broth to pan. Cook on medium low heat, covered for 15 to 20 minutes until cabbage reaches the consistency of softness you like. Some people like their cabbage kind of crispy while others like it well done. Remove from heat, crumble bacon on top, sprinkle with paprika. Makes about 6 servings.

My husband loved this and so did a friend who stopped by for lunch. She took some home with her and had it for dinner. I cooked kielbasa for a side of meat. It’s a good side dish.

I believe you will need a completely different recipe than this one because of your restriction.

My mom used to make something similar, but she added sliced browned sausage and a can of drained tomatoes.
