Easy Southern Style Green Beans

In large saucepan over medium heat cook bacon until almost completely brown. Add onion and cook for additional 5 minutes. Turn heat to low and add garlic; cook for 30 seconds. Remove bacon/onion mixture to a bowl. Do not wash saucepan.

Add green beans and enough chicken broth to just cover the green beans. Add Cajun seasoning.

Bring to a low boil. Cover and reduce to simmer. Simmer for 1 &#8211; 1 1/2 hours stirring occasionally. Drain chicken broth, return  bacon/onion mixture and heat for 1-2 minutes. Add butter, stir and serve.

I have to thank you for this recipe. I have to tell you, I was very concerned about the simmering time and I had to  delete the onion.  But this was the first time in 40 years that I was excited to put green beans  on the  table.

Have you ever fried the green beans in the bacon fat for a few minutes before adding onion, water, salt &amp; pepper? You don’t need anything else . ? potatoes can be added close to end of 1-2 hours of slow cooking. Now that’s Missouri style. Oh, add the cut up bacon at the end.

We've been making these beans "Southern style" for years, following as closely as memory is possible the great green beans from the Social Grill in Birmingham long ago. Your recipe is right on! We add a couple of large-dice new potatoes along with the onions, bacon and red pepper flakes right from the start.  So glad to see this recipe!

Can I use canned green bean instead of fresh?   I made this once before they came out just right.  But my boyfriend got this super big can of green beans and I want to use it.

I have never had green beans this way before...usually I just warm up a can of green beans in a pot. But this recipe is at the top of the chart!!!! Old Fashioned Southern Style Green Beans

Place the ham hocks (or other choice of seasoning meat) in a large pot with just enough water to cover. Bring to a boil, then lower the heat to a simmer. Cover and cook for 30 minutes to 1 hour.

While the ham hock simmers, prepare the green beans by removing the “tips and tails.” Snap the beans into approximately 2&quot; pieces or leave whole if desired.

Add the beans and salt to the pot. Bring the contents to a boil, then lower the heat to a simmer.

Cover and cook for 1 hour or until the beans are tender.

Remove the ham hocks to a plate and allow to cool for a few minutes.

Remove and shred the meat from the ham hock, discarding the skin and bones. Add the shredded meat back to the pot and stir it into the beans.

Heat a Dutch oven or large pot on medium high heat. Add the pieces of bacon and cook for 3-4 minutes until the bacon crisps.

Drain the excess fat from the pot. I reserved about a teaspoon of fat in the pot.

Add the onions and garlic. Cook for 2-3 minutes until fragrant.

Add the chicken broth and deglaze the pot with a spatula. Scrap up all the bits of cooked bacon in the pot.

Add in green beans, Creole seasoning, salt and pepper to taste. Stir.

Reduce heat to Low. Cover and cook for 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours until the green beans are soft. If it&#039;s your first time making the dish, check in on the green beans often to be sure they reach your desired texture and you don&#039;t overcook them. Cook time will vary greatly based on the type of pot you use. Using my Dutch Oven, the beans reach my desired texture after an hour.

Taste repeatedly and adjust seasoning as necessary.

Serve with a slotted spoon.

Southern Green Beans

Authentic southern-style green beans made with smoked turkey, onion, garlic, and plenty of spices cooked until very tender. These green beans are a must-have for Thanksgiving and are so easy to make you can enjoy them anytime!

turkey necks

green beans

medim yellow onion (chopped)

garlic (minced)

garlic powder

onion powder

smoked paprika (or sweet paprika)

cayenne pepper

Add the turkey necks to a large Dutch oven or heavy-bottomed stock pot. Pour the chicken broth in along with enough water to just cover the turkey necks. Bring the turkey necks to a boil then lower the heat to medium, cover, and simmer the turkey necks for 2 hours.

Meanwhile, rinse the green beans well, snap the ends off, and snap the larger beans in half.

After 2 hours, add the green beans, onion, garlic, and spices to the pot with the turkey necks and give everything a good stir with a wooden spoon. Cover the pot and simmer the green beans for 40 to 50 minutes, or until very tender.

Remove the turkey necks from the pot, allow them to cool enough to handle, carefully remove the meat from the bones, add the meat back to the pot, and discard the bones. Watch out for tiny bones when removing the meat.

Taste the beans for seasoning and add more salt and pepper to taste. Enjoy!

Place the green beans into the crockpot, making sure they are all laying in the same direction and are tight together, this will ensure they cook evenly. Put additional chicken broth in if needed. The beans don't need to be fully submerged, but they do need to be about 90% covered.

Heat a large stock pot over medium high heat. Dice the country ham into bite-sized pieces. Once the pot is hot, add the country ham and sauté for 2-3 minutes until the ham is light pink and starting to brown on the edges.

Add the onion. Sauté until the onion is translucent, about 8-10 minutes.

Add the minced garlic and sauté for an additional 30 seconds.

Add the green beans and potatoes to the pot.

Pour the chicken broth over the top of the vegetables.

Add the Cajun seasoning, ground black pepper and red pepper flakes. Add salt to taste.

Bring the pot to a boil, then cover it with a lid, reduce the heat to medium-low and cook for 30 minutes. The green beans and potatoes should be fork tender when they’re done.

Remove the pot from the heat and allow the beans and potatoes to sit for at least 15 minutes. The vegetables will continue to absorb the flavors of the ham and the broth as they sit.

Season with additional salt and pepper if necessary.

Stovetop Method:

Combine all the ingredients in the crock of a 6-quart slow cooker.

Stir everything to combine.

Cook on high for 3 hours or on low for 6 hours.

Slow Cooker Method:

Turn on the SAUTE function the Instant pot. Once the pot is hot, add the diced country ham and cook until the ham turns light pink and starts to brown around the edges, about 2-3 minutes.

Add the onion and sauté for about 8-10 minutes until it is translucent. Add the garlic and sauté for an additional 30 seconds.

Turn off the SAUTE function. Add the green beans and potatoes to the pot. Pour in the chicken broth, Cajun seasoning, ground black pepper and red pepper flakes. Stir everything to combine.

Seal the lid on the Instant Pot. Set the function to MANUAL and the time for six minutes. Once the time is up, allow the pressure to release naturally or do a quick release.
