How to Toast Pine Nuts

pine nuts (or any quantity; for any more than 1 cup use the oven method)

Stovetop method

Place the nuts in a dry skillet (no oil) over medium heat. Heat, shaking the pan and stirring often with a wooden spoon, until the nuts are fragrant and golden brown, about 3 minutes. Stay at the stove because the nuts can easily burn! Remove immediately from the heat and transfer to a plate to stop the cooking.

Oven method

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Place the nuts on a baking sheet in a single layer. Bake for about 5 minutes until fragrant and golden brown, stirring once. Do not stray far from the oven, since the nuts can go from toasted to burned quickly. Remove immediately and transfer to a plate to stop the cooking.

Use immediately. Or, allow to cool completely and store in an airtight container at room temperature for 1 week and refrigerated at least 2 months. (You also can extend the life by freezing nuts.)

To toast pine nuts on the stove:

Using a fine mesh colander, rinse  pine nuts under cold running water and toss with Kosher salt, if desired.

Transfer nuts to a small brown paper bag, fold the top of bag shut, and microwave on HIGH for 1 to 1 1/2 minutes.

Remove bag from microwave and allow to cool.

How to Toast Pine Nuts - Three Methods

Place in Pan

Place the pine nuts in a dry frying pan large enough to hold them in a single layer. Dry means you don&#39;t need to add oil or water to the pan.

Heat

Turn the heat to medium-low and toast the pine nuts until fragrant and golden brown, stirring frequently or even constantly, especially as they begin to brown.

Transfer

When they&#39;re golden brown, immediately transfer them from the hot skillet to a plate to stop the cooking and prevent scorching. Nuts should be in a single layer to cool.

Stove Top Method:

Microwave

Spread pine nuts in a single layer on a microwave-safe plate. Microwave on full power (100%) for 1 minute, stir, and then continue to microwave in 30 second intervals, stirring each time, until golden brown.

Watch

Keep an eye on them, especially towards the end, because they can burn quickly. The microwave tends to heat unevenly so some nuts may be untoasted while others scorch if you&#39;re not watching and stirring every 30 seconds.

Transfer to another plate to cool; arrange in a single layer.

Microwave Method:

Spread

Spread pine nuts in a single layer on a rimmed baking sheet.

Bake

Bake for 5 to 10 minutes, stirring every 2 to 3 minutes, or until golden brown.

Immediately transfer to a plate to cool, in a single layer. Don&#39;t leave them in the hot pan because they will continue to brown.
