Classic Tuna Melt

white meat tuna

dill pickles

Drain the tuna. Place it in a bowl and use a fork to break apart any large clumps. Finely chop the red onion and dill pickles, and mince the parsley. Add the vegetables to the bowl with the tuna, along with the dried tarragon or dill, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard and salt. Stir to combine. 

Spread the outsides of the bread slices with mayonnaise or butter. Assemble the sandwiches: on each slice of bread (buttered side out) place the tuna salad filling, a tomato slice, and 2 slices of cheddar cheese, then top with the other slice of bread. 

Preheat a skillet over medium heat (cast iron works well if you have it). Cook the sandwich 2 to 3 minutes, then carefully flip and cook about 2 minutes more until browned and the cheese is melted. Serve immediately.

pickle spears, minced (see notes)

steak seasoning (see notes)

gluten free bread

Preheat a large flat skillet or griddle over medium heat.

In a medium-sized bowl stir together tuna, mayonnaise, minced pickles, and steak seasoning. Butter one side of each slice of bread then flip two over and top each with half the tuna mixture. Add a slice of cheese then cover with remaining slices of buttered bread.

Place sandwiches onto preheated skillet or griddle then cook until golden brown. Flip then cook until the second side is golden brown and cheese is melted. Remove sandwiches to plates then slice and serve.

In a bowl, combine tuna, celery, pickles, cilantro, salt, pepper, red pepper flakes and mayonnaise.

Add juice from half a lemon and keep aside.

Add olive oil to a skillet and heat. Place a slice of bread in the skillet and cook  until golden brown.

Flip the slice of bread and place 2 American cheese slices on top. Cook until the cheese melts.

Place the bread on a plate and add the tuna mixture on top.

Add sliced tomatoes and onions on top (optional).

Place another slice of bread in the skillet and heat on both sides until golden brown. Cover the sandwich with the slice of bread.

I used this recipe as a guide substituting water chestnuts for the celery, a whole green onion chopped fine in place of the onion, a little salt and lemon juice.  I also added some capers and was careful with the mayo as you suggested, it turned out nice.  thank you for your inspiration.

Tuna Melt

Prep the oven.

Make the tuna salad.

In a medium size bowl add the tuna, mayonnaise, lemon juice, celery, green onion, fresh parsley, salt, pepper and mix until well combined.

Butter the bread.

Spread butter on one side of each bread slice. Place 4 slices on a baking sheet, with the buttered side down.

Assemble the sandwiches.

Top each slice of bread with ¼ of the tuna salad, 2 slices of the cheddar cheese and tomato slices. Top with the other slices of bread with the buttered side up.

Bake.

Transfer the baking sheet to the oven and bake until the cheesy melts, 5 to 8 minutes.

Refreshing &amp; packed full of flavor, the sodium count was high, but I cut back where I could-no salt butter, my own homemade mayo, used fresh cracked pepper &amp; dill. Easy to make yet had so much good flavor, will make again !

Oh no just made this for lunch and forgot the cheese !! I used a George Forman grill and was still good without the cheese…can’t take a photo as I’ve eaten it 😂😂

This tuna melt was fabulous on my first try.  I had no parsley so left out, left out salt, used sliced cheddar cheese, and grilled it in a nonstick pan.  Came out perfect and my husband REALLY liked it.  I am going to put it into our regular rotation.  Thanks!

Great recipe.  I used havarti slices instead of cheddar.  I also used one small can of tuna in oil for part of the tuna.  I find tuna in water doesn't have that "tuna taste" I crave when I want a tuna sandwich so now I do a 50/50 ratio of tuna in water and tuna in oil.

Line up all your ingredients, sliced and measured, so you’re ready to go once the matzah softens. Things happen fast!

To soften matzah: Hold matzah sheet under running water for 40 seconds, ensuring all sides get thoroughly wet. Place on a paper towel to drain and soften.

Let it sit for ~5 minutes; you want the matzah to be soft enough to bend without breaking. If it’s not bendable, place underwater for another quick splash and let it sit again for a few more minutes.

Mist a medium skillet with nonstick oil spray and warm over medium heat.

Cut the matzah sheet into four quadrants. Place the tuna on one square, the tomato slice on another, the cheese on a separate square, and the avocado and onion together on the last.

Very carefully fold the tuna square up and over the tomato square. Then fold it over the cheese square, and lastly, fold the layers over the sliced onion/avocado quadrant. You’ll be left with one small thick square.
