Flavorful turkey picadillo simmered with veggies, tomato sauce and homemade sazon seasoning. My family&#039;s lightened up take on traditional picadillo can be made in one pot or in your slow cooker for ease. Serve this comforting, kid-friendly dinner with arroz con gandules, rice, tortillas, or even chips for dipping!

Turkey Picadillo (with a slow cooker option!)

For the turkey & veggies:

olive oil oil

turkey (93%)

½ cup very finely diced yellow onion

green bell pepper

cilantro

garlic,

For the spices:

coriander

cumin

turmeric

garlic powder

oregano

salt

black pepper

Mix-ins:

tomato sauce

water

olive brine,

To garnish:

onion

Add oil to a large skillet or pot and place over medium heat. Add in ground turkey and cook, breaking up the meat until mostly browned and cooked almost all the way through.

Next, add in the diced onion, green bell pepper, cilantro and garlic and cook for a few minutes until peppers and onions are softened.

Stir in the spices: coriander, cumin, turmeric, garlic powder, dried oregano, salt and pepper. Cook for 30 seconds until spices are fragrant. Then immediately stir in the tomato sauce, water and olive brine, bring mixture to a simmer, then cover and cook for 15-20 minutes. Remove the lid and if the mixture is too liquidy, continue to cook over low until most of the liquid has absorbed.

Taste and adjust seasonings as necessary, adding more salt to taste. Serve with arroz con gandules, your favorite rice, tortillas, avocado, and or chips for dipping!

Turkey Picadillo is a lighter alternative to my favorite Cuban beef picadillo recipe only much leaner, and made with ground turkey instead.

Turkey Picadillo

93% turkey

tomato sauce ((1/2 can))

tsp kosher salt

tsp cumin

bay leaves

tbsp green Spanish pitted olives (plus 2 tbsp brine)

tomato

onion (finely chopped)

garlic

tbsp red bell pepper (finely chopped)

cilantro (optional)

Brown the ground turkey on medium heat in large sauté pan and season with salt and pepper. Use a wooden spoon to break the meat up into small pieces.

Meanwhile, while turkey is cooking, make the sofrito by chopping onion, garlic, pepper, tomato and cilantro. (I quickly do it in my mini chopper)

Add sofrito to the meat and continue cooking on a low heat.

Add olives and about 2 tbsp of the brine (this adds great flavor) cumin, bay leaves, and more salt if needed.

Add tomato sauce and 1/4 cup of water and mix well.

Reduce heat to low and simmer covered about 15 to 20 minutes to let the flavors meld.

Picadillo is a Latin American dish. Today’s recipe is my version of picadillo. It’s normally with ground pork or beef but I used ground turkey. The spices I mixed worked perfectly in this dish. I love using smoked paprika, it adds bright beautiful yellow-red color that’s very enticing to the eyes. The other veggies are very colorful too.
