Easy Vegan Churro Recipe

To begin, bring the water, salt, and ¼ cup vegetable oil to a low boil in a medium saucepan. Once boiling, remove the mixture from heat and pour into a mixing bowl with the flour. Stir until well-combined, then let the dough cool for about 15 minutes.

In the meantime, make the cinnamon sugar coating by combining the sugar and cinnamon in a shallow bowl or plate. Set aside.

Once it has cooled, transfer the dough to a piping bag with a large star-tip attachment. Then, bring 5-6 cups of vegetable oil (enough to fully submerge the churros) to 350-375°F in a deep pot.

It&#039;s ideal to use a thermometer when working with oil. If you don&#039;t have one, test if the oil is ready by dropping a small piece of dough in. If it sizzles and floats to the top, then you should be good to go.

Squeeze 2-3 pieces of dough out at a time over the pot of oil (around 4-6 inches long). Cut each piece with a pair of scissors or a knife. Note: don&#039;t cook more than 3 at a time since the oil temperature will drop too much.

Fry the churros until golden brown, about 2-4 minutes per batch. Using a slotted spoon, remove each one from the oil onto a paper towel-lined plate. Leave them for about 30-60 seconds before rolling in the cinnamon sugar mixture.

Churros

To make the chocolate sauce, melt the chocolate, coconut milk, cinnamon, and vanilla together in a double boiler over low heat. Stir constantly until the chocolate has melted, then transfer to a serving dish.

Alternatively, you can microwave the chocolate sauce ingredients in a heat-safe bowl for 10-15 second increments. Be careful to stop and stir frequently as it&#039;s easier to burn the chocolate in the microwave.

Serve the churros while warm with a side of chocolate sauce for a crispy, Mexican-style treat!

Chocolate Sauce

This Vegan Churros Recipe comes together with 6 basic ingredients and can be made even by beginners! The churros are crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and naturally egg-free and dairy-free.

Vegan Churros Recipe

water

vegan butter ((or vegetable oil like canola oil))

salt

all-purpose flour

flax egg ((1 tbsp flaxseed meal mixed with 2 tbsp water))

Vegetable oil,

dark chocolate, chopped

full-fat coconut milk ((or vegan cream of choice))

If you haven&#39;t already, prepare the flax egg by mixing the flaxseed meal with the water. Let it sit for 5 minutes to thicken. In the meantime, prepare a plate with a few paper towels on it, so you can place there the churros after frying them later.

To a plate or a shallow bowl, add cinnamon and granulated sugar and mix. Set aside for later.

In a medium saucepan, combine sugar, vegan butter, salt, and water. Bring to a boil over high heat, then turn the heat to low. Add the flour and stir immediately using a rubber spatula.

Keep cooking the dough and stirring occasionally, until the dough forms into a ball. Remove from the heat and add to a bowl. Add the flax egg and using an electric mixer, mix for 30 seconds. Then, transfer the dough into a piping bag with a large star-tip attachment (around ½ inch).

Making the dough

If this is your first time making churros, prepare 12 pieces of parchment paper where you&#39;ll be piping the churros. Pipe the dough into 5-6-inch long churros, cutting the end of the churros using a pair of scissors. If you&#39;ve made churros before, you can pipe the dough into the hot oil as usual.

In a deep pot or a Dutch oven, add 3-4 inches of oil and let it heat over medium-high heat until it reaches 380ºF (190ºC). Using a kitchen thermometer in this case is very useful. However, if you don&#39;t have one on hand, you can use a wooden spoon or a chopstick. Dip it into the oil and if the edges sizzle right away, the oil is ready for frying. Just keep in mind that this isn&#39;t as accurate as using a thermometer is.

When the oil is ready, drop the vegan churros into the pot, but hold on to the parchment paper (don&#39;t worry, it won&#39;t burn). Fry the churros for 2 minutes on each side, until golden brown, stirring occasionally to make sure they don&#39;t stick to the bottom of the pot. Don&#39;t fry more than 4-5 churros at a time, because the temperature of the oil will drop too much.

Once ready, use kitchen tongs or a slotted spoon to remove the churros from the oil and place them on the plate layered with paper towels. Let the churros sit on the paper towel for 30 seconds, then coat them with cinnamon sugar.

Repeat frying and dipping the churros in the sugar until all are done!

Frying

Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Layer a baking sheet with a piece of parchment paper. Pipe the churros on the parchment paper, leaving enough space between each one.

Bake for 18-22 minutes, or until golden brown. Then, turn off the oven and let them sit for 10 minutes before taking them out.

Finally, coat the churros in cinnamon sugar while they&#39;re still warm, and serve right away!

Baking

To a small saucepan, add coconut cream or plant-based milk and dark chocolate. Heat on low heat until the chocolate is melted and you have a warm chocolate sauce.

Preheat your oven to 190ºC, flip a muffin tray upside down and grease every other cavity of your muffin tray - otherwise they might stick together when they grow!

Prepare your flax eggs and set them aside for 10 minutes prior to use.

In a large bowl, combine the flour and vanilla powder (if you’re using vanilla extract instead, then add it in step 4).

In a saucepan, heat the water, vegan margarine, brown sugar, granulated sugar, and salt and stir until the margarine is fully melted and sugar dissolved. Bring to a boil, then add it to the vanilla/flour mixture immediately. 

Stir with a spatula and add in your flax eggs. Mix until everything is fully incorporated, then transfer the dough into a large piping bag with a star shaped nozzle.

Starting at the bottom, pipe the dough around every other muffin cups. Be sure to pipe them right onto the row below, slightly pressing into the lower row to avoid any cracks in your churro bowls. Spray the piped cups with a little rapeseed oil, then bake in the oven for around 20 minutes or until golden.

Remove them from the oven and let them cool down for 20 minutes before removing them from the muffin tray. 

Combine the remaining granulated sugar and cinnamon in a bowl and toss your churro cups in the mixture, then plate them and add a scoop of ice cream alongside raspberries, nuts and syrup. Enjoy!
