Whole Masoor Dal (Brown Lentils) cooked in the Instant Pot. This simple and flavorful dal is vegan and gluten-free and pairs well with rice for a comforting meal.

Whole Masoor Dal

cumin seeds

Press the saute button on the Instant Pot. Once it's hot, add the cumin seeds and let them sizzle for few seconds.

Then add the chopped ginger, onion, green chili and mix. Cook for 4 to 5 minutes until onions are light golden brown in color. Stir often.

Add in the tomatoes and de-glaze the pot by scrapping the bottom with a spatula. There shouldn&#x27;t be anything stuck at the bottom.

Add the spices- coriander powder, turmeric and garam masala. Also add the salt and mix. Cook for 1 minute.

Add the rinsed whole masoor dal to the pot and toss with the masala.

Then add in the water and stir. Close the pot with the lid.&nbsp;

Press the manual or pressure cook button and cook on high pressure for 13 to 14 minutes, with the pressure valve in sealing position. Let the pressure release naturally.

Open the pot and add chopped cilantro and mix. At this point, you can also add a teaspoon of ghee for extra flavor. You can also add crushed kasuri methi or squeeze in some lemon juice.

Serve whole masoor dal with rice or roti or paratha.&nbsp;

Follow all the steps as it is and then pressure cook for 5 to 6 whistles on high heat. Let the pressure release naturally. Alternatively, you can also pressure cook the dal only with salt and turmeric and water and then make a tempering/tadka in a separate pan and add to the dal.&nbsp;

Stove-Top Pressure Cooker Instructions

If you don't have a pressure cooker and want to make this dal, follow all the steps as it is until add the lentils. Add the lentils, water and then cook for around 30-35 minutes uncovered on medium heat until lentils are soft and done. You may need to adjust the amount of water here as water will evaporate when cooking in an open pot compared to a pressure cooker.&nbsp;

Stove-Top Pan Instructions

Instant Pot Whole Masoor Dal

c Whole Masoor Dal (Brown lentils)

c Water

Cumin seeds

slit Green chili

tbsp Finely chopped garlic

1.5 tsp Grated ginger

c Finely chopped onions

Salt

coriander

1.5 tsp Ground paprika

tsp Garam Masala

Turmeric powder

c Finely chopped tomatoes

recipe Soaked masoor dal

tsp Ginger juliennes

tsp finely chopped green chili

tbsp coriander leaves

Basmati rice

Wash the whole masoor dal thoroughly under running water.

Drain all the water used for washing.

Add 2 c water to this and let it soak for 1 hour.

Soaking the Masoor Dal

Place the inner pot in the IP.

Turn on saute mode on normal in the IP for 9 mins.

Now add the oil.

When the display reads hot, add cumin seeds and green chili.

Once the cumin seeds crackle, add the ginger and garlic.

Mix well and saute for 1 min.

Now, add the finely chopped onions and salt.

Mix well and saute till onions become soft.

Add all the spice powders and mix well.

At this stage, add the finely chopped tomatoes and mix well.

Continue to cook till tomatoes turn mushy. This takes 3 mins.

Drain the water from the soaked lentils.

Add the soaked lentils to the pot along with 3 c water.

Mix well.

Turn off the saute mode.

Making Instant Pot Whole Masoor Dal

Place a trivet inside the pot.

To another stainless steel pot, add and wash the basmati rice under running water for 2 times.

Add salt and 2 c water to the washed rice.

Place the rice pot on the trivet and close the rice pot.

Close the lid of the IP and turn valve to sealing.

Turn on Pressure cook mode on high for 10 mins.

Allow the cooking cycle to complete.

Wait for the pressure to release naturally.

Once done, switch off the IP.

Open the lid, remove the cooked rice and the trivet.

Fluff the cooked rice with a fork.

Using a ladle, mash the lentils gently.

Turn on saute mode on high for 2 mins and allow the curry to simmer.

Garnish with finely chopped coriander leaves, ginger juliennes and finely chopped green chili.

Mix well and serve hot with the cooked rice.

Wash the lentils

Wash the whole masoor dal under running cold water till water runs clear. Or rinse in a bowl 2-3 times till water is not cloudy anymore.

Saok lentils

Soaking lentils is an optional step. If you want and have time, you can soak for 30 minutes.

Add onion, cumin seeds

Turn on the electric pressure cooker with saute mode. Once hot add oil. Then add cumin seeds and let them sizzle.

Cook onions

Then add onion and sprinkle a pinch of salt to speed the onion cooking process. Cook for 2-3 minutes or till onions are soft and light pink.

Cook ginger garlic green chili

Add ginger, garlic and green chili. Mix and cook for 30 seconds.

Cook tomatoes

Add spice powders

Mix in all the spice powders except garam masala (turmeric, red chili powder, coriander, cumin powder). Also, add remaining salt.

Add lentils and water

Pressure cook

Cover with the lid, keep the position of the vent to sealing. Cook on manual (high pressure) for 15 minutes. {it takes around 8 mins to come to pressue}. Then you can NPR or QPR after 10 mins.

Add lemon juice and garnish

Add lemon juice, garam masala and cilantro. Stir well and serve.

Instant Pot Lentil Curry:

Pressure cook lentils

Take washed masoor dal into a pressure cooker and add 1 ½ cups of water. Cover with the lid, put the weight on and cook on medium heat for 5-6 whistles. Let the pressure go down by itself and open the lid.

Sizzle cumin seeds

Heat the oil in a pan on medium heat. Once hot add cumin seeds and let them sizzle.

Saute ginger garlic green chili

Then add ginger garlic and green chili, saute for 40-45 seconds.

Saute onion

Add chopped onions and sprinkle a little salt. Cook till onions are soft and light pink in color.

Now mix in chopped tomatoes. Cook till tomatoes are soft and almost mushy.

Mix spices

Add remaining salt and spice powders (turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, cumin powder and garam masala).

Simmer lentils with water

Then add cooked masoor dal and another ½-1 cup of water depending on the consistency you prefer. Mix and simmer for 5-6 minutes.

Add lemon juice

Squeeze fresh lemon juice. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.

Start the pressure cooker in sauté mode and let it heat. Add oil and cumin seeds. Saute for 30 seconds.

When the cumin seeds change color, add green chili, onions, ginger and garlic. Sauté for 3 minutes until the onions become golden brown while stirring frequently.

Add tomato and spices. Stir and sauté for another 2 minutes.&nbsp;

Add the lentils, water and stir well. Press cancel and close lid with vent in sealing position.

Change the instant pot setting to manual or pressure cook mode at high pressure for 12 mins. After the instant pot beeps, let the pressure release naturally.&nbsp;

Open the pot. Add the lime juice and stir the dal.&nbsp;

Garnish with cilantro. Serve dal with roti, naan or rice.&nbsp;

Follow the same steps as above. Cook for 3-4 whistles (about 12 minutes) and let the pressure release naturally.

For stovetop pressure cooker

Follow the same steps until adding the lentis, and water. Add 1/2 cup more water. Cook on stovetop partly covered for 30-35 minutes until the lentils are cooked and soft. You might have to add more water as it evaporates in the pan.

Instant Pot Brown Lentils (Whole Masoor Dal)

Brown lentil curry, also known as sabut masoor ki dal is a very comforting and delicious dal recipe from India. This Indian dal is vegan and gluten-free. You can enjoy it with rice as well as any Indian bread like roti or naan.

Whole masoor dal-Indian style brown lentil

brown lentils (sabut masoor)

red onion (finely chopped)

tomato (finely chopped)

garlic

green chilies

cilantro (roughly chopped)

of ½ a lemon (adjust to taste)

red chili powder (adjust to taste)

mustard oil/ any cooking oil

Rinse brown lentils. Put in the pressure cooker with water, turmeric powder, and half of the salt you are using in the recipe. Cook on medium flame until 3 whistles.

After 3 whistles, switch off the stove wait for around 5-10 minutes or until the pressure gets released completely.

Heat oil in a pan. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.

Add garlic and saute until it starts turning brown.

Next, add onion and cook until it also turns golden brown.

Add coriander powder and red chili powder. Saute for around 30 seconds.

Add green chilies, tomatoes, and the remaining salt. Cook until the tomatoes turn mushy.

Finally, add cooked brown lentils and mix everything. Let the dal simmer for 2 minutes and then switch off the stove.

Add lemon juice and coriander leaves. Mix. Serve hot with rice or roti.
