Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Coat a 2-quart casserole dish with cooking spray.

In a large skillet over medium heat, heat the oil.

Add the onion to the hot oil and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.

Add the beef and cook, while crumbling the meat, until completely browned, about 7-10 minutes.

In a large bowl, add the beef mixture along with the beans, the tomatoes, the brown sugar, the Dijon mustard, the salt, and the pepper, mixing well to combine.

Pour the beef mixture into the prepared casserole dish and arrange the bacon slices on top.

Cover the casserole dish with a lid or aluminum foil.

Bake until thick and bubbly, about 45 minutes.

Uncover the dish and preheat the broiler.
