Step 1

Beat together eggs, sugar, and salt in a large saucepan.

Step 2

Put the heat on low and mix in 1 cup of milk, stirring continuously. Once mixture starts to boil and has thickened enough to coat a metal spoon, stop stirring and remove from heat.

Step 3

Add remaining milk, vanilla and nutmeg and stir.

Step 4

Cover and place in refrigeratore until thoroughly chilled.

Step 5

If adding whipped topping, fold in whipped topping and garnish or add stir-ins, as desired. Serve immediately.
