Air Fryer Falafel Recipe

chickpeas (soaked overnight)

onion (roughly chopped)

parsley (roughly chopped)

cilantro (roughly chopped)

Place chickpeas in a large bowl and cover with at least 2 inches water. Soak overnight.

Drain and rinse chickpeas and add them to a food processor. Add onion, parsley, cilantro, pepper, garlic, sesame seeds, cumin and salt and process until it’s the texture of couscous.

Sprinkle in the 4 Tablespoons flour and baking powder, and pulse, adding additional flour if needed so that you can form the mixture into a ball without it sticking to your hands.

Place in a bowl and refrigerate for at least an hour to allow the mixture to firm up.

Using your hands, or a cookie scoop, form falafel into golf ball sized balls.

Preheat air fryer 380 degrees. Spray the basket with oil and place the falafel inside, leaving space between them (depending on the size of your air fryer, you may need to cook them in batches). Coat the falafel with additional oil spray.

Cook 15 minutes, until golden brown, flipping over halfway through.

Dry the chickpeas on paper towels.

Place the onions and garlic in the bowl of a food processor fitted with a steel blade. Add the parsley, scallions, cilantro, cumin, salt, and red pepper flakes.

Process until blended 30 to 60 seconds, then add the chickpeas and pulse 2 to 3 times until just blended, but not pureed.

Sprinkle in the baking powder and the flour, scape the sides of the bowl down with a spatula and pulse 2 to 3 times.

Transfer to a bowl and refrigerate, covered, 2 to 3 hours.

Form the falafel mixture into 12 balls, if it’s too sticky add some flour to your hands and your work surface.

Preheat the air fryer 350F.

How To Make Air Fryer Falafel

Easy air fryer falafel recipe that is golden crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. A recipe that is gluten-free and vegan friendly.

Cups Dried Chickpeas, Soaked*

Whole Onion, Quartered

Cloves Garlic

Cup Flat-Leaf Parsley Leaves, Stem Removed

Tablespoon Toasted Sesame Seeds

Tablespoon Fresh Thyme, Stem Removed

Tablespoon Fresh Oregano, Stem Removed

Teaspoon Ground Cumin Powder

Teaspoon Ground Coriander

Teaspoon Ground Black Pepper

Teaspoon Baking Powder

Teaspoon Cayenne Pepper

Teaspoon Salt

Avocado Oil

Soak dried chickpeas overnight or for at least 12 hours to rehydrate. Do not substitute this with can chickpeas, or try to accelerate the process by cooking it.

Throw in all the ingredients (except chickpeas, sesame seeds, and oil) in your food processor or Vitamix.

Chop and mix all the ingredients in your food processor or Vitamix. You want to make sure everything is grinding finely.

Wash and drain your soaked chickpeas. Add the soaked chickpeas into the food processor with the other ingredients and pulse chickpea into a coarse meal.

Transfer the mixture that to a bowl with a lid. Add your toasted sesame seeds and mix them in. Then refrigerate and let it sit for an hour.

Drizzle some avocado oil onto your hand or in a small ice cream scooper and form the mixture into a small ball. The ball should be about 1.5 inch in diameter. Applying a drizzle of oil will help to create a crispier texture on the outside. You may need to reapply more oil in between every scoop. Then place each falafel ball into your air fryer basket. You can also brush additional avocado oil on top to get that crispier texture.

Fill up your air fryer basket and then cook it at 375 F for 15 minutes. Finished falafel should look golden brown. If it is not, cook for longer. Repeat this process until you use up all the mixture.

Air Fryer Falafels

chickpeas

small red onion (chopped (about 1/2 cup chopped red onion))

Soak chickpeas

Start by rinsing the chickpeas and then placing them into a large bowl with plenty of water to soak overnight, and up to 24 hours.

Drain and rinse

Add ingredients

Place the soaked and drained chickpeas, chopped red onion, crushed garlic, chili, parsley, cilantro, ground cumin, ground coriander, and salt into the bowl of a food processor.

Pulse

Pulse a few times, and then run the food processor until the ingredients are finely chopped. It should still have a bit of texture to it, roughly the size of couscous grains. You may need to stop and scrape the sides of the food processor a couple of times.

Chill

Transfer the falafel mixture into a bowl, and refrigerate for about an hour.

When you are ready to make your falafel, add the baking powder to the bowl and mix to combine well.

Shape balls

Scoop heaping tablespoons of the falafel mixture, and use your hands to form into balls. I err on the side of slightly smaller falafels to ensure they stay together well, but they're maybe 2 tablespoons each.

Preheat

Spray

Brush or spray the air fryer basket with a bit of oil, and then place the falafels in a single layer, with a bit of space between them. I had to cook mine in two batches. Brush or spray the tops of the falafel balls with olive oil (I use a silicone pastry brush).

Air fry

Place the falafels into the air fryer, and set a timer for 10 minutes.

Turn falafels

After 10 minutes, carefully turn the falafels over, and brush with olive oil again.

Return to the air fryer for another 5 minutes.

Air Fryer Instructions

Pre-heat your oven to 200°C / 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, and spray the parchment with olive oil.

Arrange

Arrange the falafel balls in a single layer on the parchment and spray or brush with olive oil.

Bake

Bake the falafels for 10 minutes, then remove from the oven, carefully turn over, and spray with a bit more oil.

Turn

Return to the oven for an additional 10 minutes, until falafels are brown and crispy.

Fry them for about 10 minutes, turning halfway through, until golden brown.   They are ready when golden brown and crisp on the outside.
