The Best Apple Crumb Pie

pie crust ((or homemade))

flour

brown sugar (packed)

white sugar

cinnamon

butter

Granny Smith apples

all-purpose flour

lemon juice

lemon zest ((optional))

nutmeg

Preheat oven to 450°F.

Directions

Combine all topping ingredients using a fork until completely mixed and crumbly.

Topping:

Peel, core, and slice apples into thin slices (approximately ⅛ inch). Toss apple slices with sugar, flour, lemon juice, lemon zest (if using), cinnamon, &amp; nutmeg.

Layer apple slices in pie shell (it will be really full) and pour any leftover juice over the apples. Top apple slices with topping and pat it down over the apples. Place pie pan on a cookie sheet (they tend to drip over if really full, this will save your oven).

Bake at 450°F for 15 minutes, reduce heat to 350°F and bake an additional 45-55 minutes. (Poke the center of the pie to make sure the apples are soft all of the way through).

Serve warm or room temperature.

Dutch Apple Pie Recipe (Apple Crumb Pie)

pie crust ((1/2 of our pie dough recipe))

lbs granny smith apples (6 medium apples)

unsalted butter

Tbsp all-purpose flour

water

sugar

brown sugar

Tbsp sugar

Salt

Tbsp unsalted butter, room temperature

pecans

Preheat oven

Preheat oven to 375˚F  with a rack on the bottom and a rack in the center of the oven.

Prepare Crust

Roll out your chilled pie dough on a lightly floured surface to a 12” diameter circle. Transfer to a 9” pie pan. Tuck excess pie dough into the dish and crimp the edges.

Slice Apples

Peel, core, and thinly slice apples to about 1/4” thickness. You should have 7 cups of sliced apples. Place them in a mixing bowl and stir in 1 tsp cinnamon.

Make Apple Filling

Melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in 3 Tbsp flour then simmer for 1 minute, whisking constantly. Whisk in 1/4 cup water, 1 cup sugar and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and continue simmering for 3 minutes, whisking frequently then remove from heat. Pour the sauce over the apples and stir to coat the apple slices. Pour apples over bottom crust.

Make Crumb Topping

To Make the Crumb Topping, stir together dry ingredients: flour, sugars, cinnamon, and salt. Add butter and work it into the mixture with our hands until pea-size crumbs form throughout the mixture. Stir in pecans. Spread the crumb topping evenly over your apples

Bake the Pie

Bake uncovered at 375˚F for 50-60 minutes (we found 55 minutes to be perfect), or until the center of the pie registers 175˚F. Place a sheet of foil on the bottom rack to catch any drips from the pie. If topping is browning too much, cover with a sheet of foil. Remove from oven and cool 1 hour to allow the filling to set so it’s easier to slice.

How To Make DUTCH APPLE PIE | Apple Crumb Pie Recipe

This easy Dutch Apple Pie is a traditional, old-fashioned dessert that always wins rave reviews!

Dutch Apple Pie {Apple Crumble Pie}

pie crust

Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and sliced ((about 5-6 medium apples))

salt

(1 stick) salted butter, melted

oats

Optional, vanilla ice cream or whipped cream

Preheat oven to 375° F. Roll out pie crust to about 12 inches in diameter. Place pie crust in a 9-inch pie plate; crimp edges with fingers or a fork. Cover and chill the crust for 10-15 minutes while you prepare the filling (the cold pastry will yield an even flakier crust).

In a large bowl, toss together all of the filling ingredients.

In a separate bowl, stir together the crumb topping ingredients.

Layer the apple mixture in the chilled pie crust. Sprinkle with crumb topping.

Bake for 45-50 minutes, covering the top of the pie loosely with foil after the first 25-30 minutes (so that the crumb topping doesn’t burn).

Cool pie on a wire rack for at least 2 hours before slicing and serving.

Don't fret, this homemade apple pie recipe is so easy to make and the perfect nostalgic treat for any occasion!

The Only Dutch Apple Pie Recipe You'll Ever Need

Homemade pie crust

salted butter

lbs apples (about 6 large apples)- cored, peeled & thinly sliced (see notes)

dark brown sugar

allspice

cardamom

ginger

bourbon (we love Uncle Nearest!)

vanilla bean paste (or vanilla extract)

apple cider vinegar (or lemon juice)

cornstarch

(1 stick) butter, melted

Prep the pie crust

If you&#8217;re making a homemade pie crust, go ahead and make the pie dough. Then chill the dough, roll it out, and shape the crust into a pie plate. Keep the shaped pie crust stored inside the fridge until you&#8217;re ready to add in the apple filling. Alternatively, if going the store-bought crust route, keep the shell in the freezer.

Make the apple pie filling

Melt the butter in a large, deep skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced apples into the skillet and toss well to coat them in the butter. Then sprinkle in the brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, allspice, cardamom, nutmeg, and ginger, and stir/gently toss to fully combine. Reduce the heat to medium-low. Let the apple mixture cook for about 5 minutes, stirring the apples every so often, until the apples are a bit tender and the mixture is fragrant. Next, stir in the bourbon, vanilla bean paste (or extract), and apple cider vinegar. Lastly, sprinkle in the flour and cornstarch, and toss well to coat. Continue cooking the apple filling for another 3-4 minutes until the flour/cornstarch dissipates, and the sauce thickens some and develops into a caramel-like consistency that coats the apples.

Let the filling cool down

Remove the skillet from heat and set aside for the apple pie filling to cool down to room temperature.

Preheat the oven

Position an oven rack in the center position, and then preheat the oven to 375°F.

Make the crumble topping

In a medium bowl, combine the melted butter, flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, and cinnamon. Use your hands (fitted with disposable gloves if desired) to stir the mixture together until it looks like wet sand crumbles. Cover the bowl and set aside until ready to assemble the pie.

Assemble the dutch apple pie

Grab your shaped pie crust from the fridge/freezer and place it onto a large foil-lined baking sheet. *This step is a good measure just in case any of the filling bubbles over and there is spillage. Then carefully pour the apple filling (be sure to scrape in all that brown sugar gooeyness, too!) into the crust, and use a rubber spatula to pack the apples into the crust. Then evenly sprinkle the crumble topping over the apple filling.

Bake the pie

for 55-65 minutes or until the crumble and pie crust edges are lightly golden brown. At the 35-minute mark, cover the pie edges with foil or one of those pie shields if you have them. This will allow for the pie to continue cooking, but prevent the crust from browning too quickly and burning.

Let the baked pie cool down

I know, it&#8217;s tempting to want to dive on in after baking, but don&#8217;t. Place the pie onto a wire rack to cool down for at least 6 hours. This time allows for the pie to settle and for the filling to set beautifully. If you cut into it too early, the pie will be runny and likely fall apart, I&#8217;d hate that for you. So, let the pie rest!

Serve dutch apple pie

When ready, slice the pie into wedges and serve it with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream (if desired) for the most delicious treat you&#8217;ll ever have, whew. Enjoy, y&#8217;all!
