Batata Harra is a Lebanese spicy potato and cilantro dish! Very popular in the Middle East, you can easily make it at home with ingredients that you already have in your kitchen.

Batata Harra

(900 grams) potatoes (about 5 potatoes

olive oil

salt

black pepper

garlic (crushed

red chili flakes

paprika

cilantro leaves

lemon (juiced)

Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).

Place the potatoes on a baking sheet, drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper, and toss well.

Roast in the oven for 40 minutes flipping halfway through or until the potatoes are crispy on the outside, and fork-tender.

Roasting Method:

Pat dry the potatoes before frying them. In a large pot or pan, heat oil to 350°F (180°C).

Add the potatoes to the oil, and fry for about 15 minutes or until they&#039;re golden brown.

Remove from oil, and drain on a paper towel.

Frying Method:

To a pan, add olive oil, garlic, and chili flakes and cook for a minute over low-medium heat or until the garlic is fragrant. Add the paprika and fresh cilantro, followed by the cooked potatoes.

Toss until the potatoes are well coated, remove from pan and serve in a serving dish.

Garnish with extra fresh cilantro, and squeeze fresh lemon juice over the potatoes before serving. Serve hot.

A simple, healthier Recipe for Lebanese Spicy Potatoes (Batata Harra) using baked potato chunks, chili pepper, garlic, herbs, and lemon juice. A wonderful appetizer or main dish that is dairy-free, Gluten-free, and Vegan.

Cut the potatoes into small or medium potato cubes (depending on how crispy you like them).A good tip is to place your chopping board over a large bowl/pot filled with water. As you chop the potatoes, you can scrape them straight into the water so they don&#039;t oxidize and change color.

Rinse them well to get rid of the excess starch. I like to add them to a large pot with plenty of water and swish them around then drain and repeat the process once more.Note* If you want super crispy potatoes and to get rid of as much starch as possible then you can soak the potatoes in hot water for 10-15 minutes.

Dry them thoroughly, using a clean towel to get rid of any water. It&#039;s important to thoroughly dry them, otherwise, they won&#039;t crisp up in the oven.

At this point, preheat the oven to 350ºF/175ºC. The air fryer method is mentioned below.

Spread the potato in a single layer, with a little space between for air-flow, on a baking tray/s and drizzle with a little olive oil and add a sprinkle of salt, then toss lightly to thoroughly coat the spuds.Note* If you want to add smoked paprika to the recipe then sprinkle some over the potatoes at this point, before they&#039;re baked in the oven.

Roast the potatoes in a pre-heated oven at 350ºF/175ºC for about 25 minutes (check on them after 20 minutes).To cook in the air fryer: spread the potato in a single layer, with space in between, and cook at 400ºF/200ºC for around 20 minutes, flipping over halfway.

Step 1: Prepare the potatoes

Meanwhile, in the last 10 minutes of the potato roasting time, finely slice the cilantro and chili (removing the stem and seeds) and crush/mince the garlic.

In a skillet, lightly saute the garlic for a couple of minutes over medium heat with a little olive oil then add the chili and lemon juice and saute for a further minute before finally adding the cilantro and stirring it in well until just wilted. The entire thing takes just five minutes!At the last moment, sprinkle some salt over the sauteed mixture and mix in well, tasting and increasing if needed.

Step 2: Prepare the Remaining Ingredients

Once the potato is ready, add it to the sauteed mixture and mix well then serve immediately.

Step 3: Combine batata harra

You can alternatively serve the batata harra as a fresh salad by preparing the coriander, chili, garlic, olive oil, lemon juice, and salt and tossing the salad well. Then simply add the roasted potatoes to the salad bowl and toss to combine.

Preheat the oven to 450°F and line a sheet pan with parchment paper.

Place the potatoes on the baking sheet in one layer, drizzle 1 tablespoon olive oil on top and season with salt. Roast until the potatoes reach a golden brown color and crisp, about 30 minutes, flipping halfway through.

Meanwhile, heat the remaining 1 tablespoon olive oil in a small pan. Add the garlic, 1 teaspoon of the crushed red pepper and half the cilantro. Sauté until the garlic is golden in color, about 2 minutes; remove from heat and set aside.

Once the potatoes are roasted, transfer the garlic mixture on top of the potatoes and toss with the remaining cilantro and the red pepper flakes.

Serve hot or warm with a squeeze of lemon juice on top, if desired

It is a great recipe! My husband is from Syria, we live in Canada, but I got used to cooking Arabic food mainly as I love it so much myself (Ukrainian by origin). I loved it how my mother-in-law used to buy chili paste from Syrian shops in Dubai and cook it that way. It's so similar! I love how you add lemon to it, and I drink it with kefir! I don't need any meat if I have this! Thank you for another great addition to our meals.

I have made these and used them in wraps with shishtawook and garlic sauce and hummus. Also added red onion and red cabbage. These are delicious. I'm hoping to try to make homemade garlic sauce(toum) soon. These recipes are so easy to follow my success is almost guaranteed.

These potatoes are fantastic— lemon juice is a must.  I added the lemon juice after the spices.

Batata Harra is a classic Lebanese side dish that transforms regular roasted potatoes into a flavorful side dish. It is made with potatoes, garlic, cilantro, and various spices that make this dish so special.

Batata Harra (Spicy Potatoes)

Preheat your oven to 450 °F (230 °C).
