Beer can chicken from the Big Green Egg has become a classic by now&#8230; but in this recipe, we&#8217;ve added a little twist: Radler beer. The refreshing sweet citrus taste of the Radler makes this beer a real treat! While the chicken is cooking, the beer in the can will evaporate, keeping the chicken tender and juicy on the inside. This is primarily for the sake of the breast meat, as it cooks quicker than the thighs. The great thing about this recipe is that you only need half a can, so make sure the beer is nice and cold!

PREPARATION


Ignite the Big Green Egg. Put the convEGGtor into the EGG with its legs facing upwards, close the lid and heat up to 180°C. Meanwhile mix together all the ingredients for the rub. Carefully lift the skin away from the chicken meat by sliding your fingers under the skin and moving them from left to right. Spread some of the rub between the skin and the meat and rub it in well. Also spread some rub into the cavity of the chicken. Thoroughly rub olive oil into the skin, then spread rub onto the skin until it is completely covered.
Fix the half-full can of Radler into the Beer Can Chicken Roaster and put the chicken over it. Put in the Round Drip Pan and place in the middle of the convEGGtor. Close the lid of the EGG and cook the beer can chicken for 60 to 70 minutes.
Remove the Drip Pan from the EGG using the EGGmitt and grate some lime and lemon zest over the bird before serving.

Beer Can Chicken

chicken (whole, 3 - 4 lb chicken)

beer

tbsp brown sugar (packed)

tarragon (dried)

tsp black pepper

tbsp smoked paprika

tsp chili powder

Prepare oven and roasting pan: Preheat oven to 425 F degrees. Place a small roasting pan on a baking dish to prevent making a total mess of your oven.

Prepare chicken: Remove any giblets from the chicken if it has any and pat it dry with paper towels.

Place beer can on roasting pan: Open the can of beer and pour about 1/4 of it into the roasting pan and set the can of beer in the center of the roasting pan.

Prepare spice rub: Mix all the rub ingredients together in a bowl.

Season chicken: Drizzle the olive oil over the chicken&nbsp; and rub it in all over.&nbsp;Sprinkle over the rub and use your hands to massage all the rub into all the nooks and crannies.

Place chicken over beer can: Place the chicken upright over the beer can. Use the chicken legs to support its body and it acts like a tripod, preventing the chicken from falling over.

Bake: Transfer the roasting pan to the oven. Bake for about 1 hour and 15 minutes or until golden and cooked through. To check to see if it's done, insert a knife into the thickest part of the thigh, and the juices should run clear.&nbsp;To properly test if the chicken is cooked through, use a meat thermometer to check and make sure the internal temperature of the chicken is 165F/75C degrees.

Remove chicken from roasting pan: Carefully lift the chicken off the can. To make this easier, have someone else help you remove the chicken while you&nbsp; hold the beer can.

Let the chicken rest and carve: Transfer the chicken to a cutting board and cover with aluminum foil. Let it sit for 15 minutes before carving it.

Turn off one grill burner and place chicken over this area, for indirect cooking. Reduce heat to medium and maintain a temperature of 325° to 350° F. Shut the lid and walk away. Let cook, without opening the grill lid, for at least 45 minutes. Let cook for 1 hour and 15 minutes total before inserting an instant-read thermometer into the thickest part of a thigh. Without touching bone, the thermometer should read 165° F. For every single 5-pound chicken we have grilled, this takes 1 hour and 15 minutes - but grills and temperatures vary, so just keep an eye on the temperature. Now turn heat up to high and let cook for 10 minutes longer, to amp up the crispiness of the skin. Every chicken we have grilled this way has turned out ultra juicy and moist, so we've let go of worrying about a dry chicken - we are more interested in producing a crackly, crisp skin at this point. With grilling gloves (we love these!!) or a heavy-duty set of oven mitts, carefully transfer chicken on the chicken holder to a rimmed pan and let rest 10 minutes. Then carefully lift chicken off the beer can, gently wiggling the chicken back and forth if it sticks. Cut chicken into pieces with a meat knife and serve immediately.

BBQ Chicken Rub

Preheat an outdoor grill for medium-high indirect heat, about 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Indirect heat is when half of the grill is heating and half is not. You will cook the chicken on the cool side.

In a small bowl mix together the BBQ Chicken rub or use your favorite premade chicken rub.

Rinse chicken under cold running water. Discard giblets and neck from chicken; drain and pat dry. Fit whole chicken over the can of beer with the legs on the bottom; keep upright. I recommend using this chicken rack also! Sprinkle 1 teaspoon of the seasoning mix into the top cavity of the chicken. The beer may foam up when the seasonings fall inside the can.

Gently lift the skin from the chicken. Then generously rub the chicken rub in between the skin and meat of the chicken to season the chicken. Next rub the remaining seasoning mix over the entire surface of the chicken.

Place the chicken, standing on the can, directly on the preheated grill on the &quot;cool side&quot; to cook using indirect heat. Close the lid and barbeque the chicken until no longer pink at the bone and the juices run clear, about 1 hour 15 minutes. We recommend not checking the grill for the first hour so the heat stays in. An instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the thigh, near the bone should read 180 degrees F (82 degrees C).

Remove the chicken from the grill and discard the beer can. Cover the chicken with a doubled sheet of aluminum foil, and allow to rest in a warm area for 10 minutes before slicing.

Beer Can Chicken on Grill

Beer Can Chicken is a flavorful 3 ingredient dish that takes summer fun to the next level!

chicken (about 3-4 pounds)

Remove and discard any giblets inside the chicken.

Open the beer and empty half of the can (into a glass for the chef is fine!)

Combine the spice rub and massage over the chicken.  Place the chicken over the beer can, legs down and place in a 9&quot; cast iron skillet.

Preheat grill to medium heat, about 375°F.

Place the cast iron skillet with the beer can and chicken directly the grill. Close the lid and allow to cook until tender and the chicken reaches 165°F in the breast and 180°F in the thigh. (Approximately 50-60 minutes).

Carefully remove from the grill, discard beer can and rest 10 minutes, tented with foil,  before carving.

To Grill

Preheat oven to 375°F.

Place the cast iron skillet with the beer can chicken in the oven. Allow to cook until tender and the chicken reaches 165°F in the breast and 180°F in the thigh. (Approximately 45-60 minutes).

Carefully remove from the oven, discard beer can and rest 10 minutes, tented with foil, before carving.

Smoked Beer Can Chicken on a Pit Boss, Traeger or Other Pellet Grill

chicken (Smaller is totally fine!)

Turn on your Pit Boss, Traeger, or other pellet grill. Set the temperature to 350°F.

Rinse the chicken and remove any giblets or organs. Pat it dry with paper towel.

Brush the chicken with olive oil and spread the rub all over including inside of the cavity.

Place the beer can half full in the middle of a small baking sheet (to catch the grease and other liquids) and carefully stand the seasoned chicken up overtop of the beer can.

Place it on your preheated pellet grill and insert the meat probe/thermometer in the thickest part of the bird and cook until your chicken reaches 165°F. If you are cooking an 8 lb chicken, budget yourself around 2 hours. 4lb chickens will cook considerably faster and need to be checked at the 1 hour mark.

Remove it from the grill and allow it to rest for 5-10 minutes.

Tip the chicken onto its side and carefully remove the beer can (some of the beer will spill. Transfer your chicken to a cutting board and carve it as usual. Drizzle with Homemade Smoked Chicken Gravy if you desire.

Smoked Beer Can Chicken on the Traeger, Pit Boss, or Other Pellet Grill Modern Harvest

When it comes to juicy smoked meat, it doesn&#039;t get any better than this beer can chicken recipe! Quick, simple, and loaded with flavor, it&#039;s one of our easy go to chicken recipes!

Smoked Beer Can Chicken

tbsp Oil

tbsp BBQ spice rub

Remove the gizzards and anything else from inside the chickens cavity and pat the chicken dry with paper towels. Make sure to thoroughly dry the chicken and make sure the cavity is dry as well.

Rub the whole chicken with the oil.

Season liberally all over, inside the cavity and under the skin, with the salt and the BBQ spice rub.

Pour a little of the beer into a high sided baking dish.

Place the beer can in the middle of the baking dish.

Carefully, nestle the chicken over the beer can, holding the body and legs to steady it.

Fold the legs out in front of the body to stand the chicken on its own, using the beer car and legs.

Fold the wing tips back behind the breasts by bending the wings backwards and then turning the wing tips to secure them behind the breast.

Prep the Beer Can Chicken

Prep grill for 375 to 400 degrees F according to your manufacturers directions.

Add oak or hickory wood chips in a smoker box, tub or foil packet for more flavor.

Smoke the Beer Can Chicken

Carefully place the pan with the chicken on the grill grate and gently close, making sure the chicken doesn’t fall over.

Smoke the chicken until it reaches 175 degrees F at in the thickest part of the thighs and 165 in the breast, about 1 ½ hours.

Prep the Smoker

Carefully, remove the chicken from the grill grates and set the pan on a wire rack. Allow the chicken to cool 10 minutes before removing the beer can. The beer can will still be hot, so use caution.

Rest

Rest the chicken on a cutting board once the beer can is removed and discarded.

Carve the chicken into portions to serve.

Smoked Beer Can Chicken Recipe

Preheat your grill (with a lid) to 225°F. If you are using wood chips in your smoker now is a good time to get them soaking. I like to use around 1/4 of the beer mixed with a little bit of water or whiskey. Make an additional 2 holes in the top of the beer can, this will help the beer absorb into the chicken better.

Remove the giblets from the chicken's cavity and rinse the chicken thoroughly with lots of fresh running water.  Dab completely dry with a paper towel both inside and out.

Drizzle the oil over the entire outside of the bid, making sure to rub it all over with your hands for an even coating that the rub will stick to. Sprinkle over around 2 tablespoon of the remaining rub onto the outside of the bird. Put the remaining rub into the beer can. The beer should foam up slightly, don&#39;t worry this is normal.

Next, we need to place the bird on top of the beer can. Hold the bird upright with the cavity facing towards the bottom. Lower the bird onto the beer can and lower until you get around 3/4 (or more) of the way down the can. Once the can is in place pull the legs forward to form a tripod. This should be enough to support the bird standing by itself.

Tuck the wing tips behind the chickens back.

Set up your grill for indirect grilling according to your grill manufacturers instructions.If you are using a gas or charcoal grill place a large drip pan under the chicken as there will be lots of runoff (perfect for making gravy later).

Place your chicken in the center of your cooking grate. You want it to be balancing on the can and the two legs. Make sure the chicken is sitting over your drip pan, this is very important. You want to savor all those delicious juices for a gravy, and obviously stop any potential flare-ups from occurring.

Cover your grill and cook until 120° then increase the temperature to 350°F and cook until the chicken skin is a dark golden brown and super crispy. You want your chicken to be cooked to an internal temperature of 165°F. The best place to check the temperature is in the middle of the thickest part of the thigh, making sure to not touch the bone. This should take somewhere around 1 1/4 - 1 3/4 hours. If you do notice the bird browning to fast, wrap it loosely with aluminum foil until it has come to temperature.

Once the bird has come to temperature, remove from the grill. Do this by using tongs to grab the can and carefully transfer it to a platter.

Let the bird rest for at least 10 minutes to let the juices rest and the proteins to redistribute. Remove the chicken from the can and serve!

Olive

Pat the chicken very dry with paper towels and trim off any excess fat around the openings.

Drizzle the entire chicken with the olive oil, which will act as a slather to help the spice rub stick to the skin.

Coat the chicken with your favorite dry rub and massage in. This can be done right before you cooking, or even better, the day before to infuse more flavor.

Place the half-full beer can on the sheet pan, then sit the chicken down right on top of it so the drumsticks reach the surface and act like a tripod with the can. Let the chicken sit out at room temperature while you prep the grill.

Prep the grill (preferably charcoal) for high heat indirect grilling.

Place the aluminum drip pan in the middle of the coal area, then carefully pour half of the coals on one side of the pan, and half on the other. Add wood chips or wood chip packet and place the cooking grate back on the grill.

Oil the grates and carefully transfer the chicken to the center of the grill, standing it up on the grates so the wings face the coals.

Cover the grill and cook until the internal temperature of the breasts reaches 160° F and the 175° F in the thighs, about 60 to 80 minutes. Verify with an instant-read probe thermometer.

Carefully transfer the chicken to a large cutting board or sheet pan and let rest for 10 minutes before carving and serving (discarding the beer can).

Beer can Chicken is lots of fun.  The chicken tends to be moist, and is reasonably forgiving on cook times.

1.5 kg whole chicken

Preheat a Webber, BBQ oven (or oven a kitchen oven) for low heat of around 150 c.

In a small pan, gently melt 180 g butter.Mix in 1 tablespoon garlic salt, 1 tablespoon paprika, salt, and pepper.

Add the paprika, pepper, salt and garlic (which should be crushed and finely chopped)

Discard (or drink) 1/2 the beer, leaving the remainder in the can.  Add some of the melted seasoned butter to the can so that its about half and inch from being full.

Place the can on a disposable baking tray.

Set the chicken on the can; inserting the can into the cavity of the chicken.

Baste the chicken with some of the remainder of the melted, seasoned butter.

Place the baking tray with the beer/chicken in the oven, and cook for 2-3 hours, or until internal temperature of chicken reaches 80 degrees °C.  I suggest a temperature probe inserted into the chicken (in a thick part of flesh, making sure you don’t hit the can).

Baste again once or twice during the cook.

Roasting chicken vertically creates the most golden and crisp exterior, with juicy and tender meat on the inside and the crunchiest chicken skin all around. 

Vertical Roasted Chicken

Tablespoon dry spices and herbs, poultry seasoning, etc.

Season the chicken on all sides and inside the chicken cavity with salt, ground black pepper and spices/herbs. You can use any combination that you like, such as Italian seasoning, poultry seasoning, taco seasoning, Herb de Provence, dry thyme, rosemary, parsley, granulated garlic/onion, etc. You can also add some paprika, curry powder, and/or a bit of cayenne pepper to make it spicier.

Marinate the chicken overnight, storing the chicken in the refrigerator. If you don&#8217;t have extra time, you can just season the chicken and bake right away, but the chicken will have more flavor if it has time to marinate.

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. 

If you are using a can or glass jar, fill it 1/3-1/2 way with water or broth. For added flavor, you can add some onions, garlic or herbs to the liquid, which will steam up and permeate the chicken as it bakes.

Fit the chicken cavity down over the can or the bundt pan. Roast in the preheated oven. 

If the chicken wing tips start to get too brown before the chicken finishes roasting, cover them with aluminum foil. Roast until an instant read thermometer reads 175 degrees in the center of the thigh and 165 degrees Fahrenheit in the breast meat. It can take anywhere from 1 1/2 hours &#8211; 2 hours, depending on the size of your chicken and your oven. The thermometer is the most accurate way of knowing when the chicken is ready. 

Meanwhile, melt the butter or use oil and mix with the minced garlic. 

When the chicken has just a few minutes left of roasting, take it out of the oven and brush with the butter and garlic mixture. 

Roast just until the meat is done cooking and the chicken is golden brown and crisp on the outside. 

Take the chicken out of the oven and rest for about 15 minutes before serving. Remove from the can before slicing. 

I made this for Thanksgiving dinner (we do not like turkey). This chicken turned out very delicious. Moist and so much flavor! I would recommend this recipe.
