Bread Pakoda is a very famous Indian tea time snack and breakfast recipe and is quite easy to make

Bread Pakora Recipe

Besan/Chickpea flour

Lemon

tsp Baking Soda

Salt

tsp Green Chilli (Finely Chopped)

tbsp Fresh Coriander (Finely Chopped)

tsp Ajwain

tsp Turmeric Powder

Oil (For Frying)

Mix all the ingredients except bread slices in a  bowl.

Add water and make a batter.

Batter should be just thin enough to coat the back of a spoon.

Heat oil for frying.

Once the oil is hot, simmer the heat to medium low.

Dip the bread slices in the batter and drop them in hot oil.

Deep fry until golden brown from both the sides.

Drain on a tissue lined plate.

Serve hot with coriander chutney.

Do not over crowd the pan while frying the pakora.

These crisp fried potato stuffed bread pakoras are a popular breakfast snack from North India. These are super delicious and makes for a great party snack. Enjoy them with green chutney or ketchup.

Bread Pakora Recipe (Bread Pakoda)

bread

oil (as needed for shallow or deep frying)

½ cups potatoes

green peas

curry leaves ((optional))

asafoetida ((hing))

green chilies (chopped)

ginger paste

coriander leaves (finely chopped)

red chili powder

½ teaspoon garam masala

turmeric

salt ((adjust

lemon juice (or as needed)

flour

rice flour ((or cornstarch))

carom seeds (or ajwain or vaamu)

Water

Steam or boil potatoes just until done without making them mushy. 

You can also boil the potatoes in a cooker for 2 whistles. I prefer to steam them as it is easy to keep an eye.

You can skip green peas. If using then steam the green peas too along with the potatoes.

When they are done, peel and mash them well and set aside.

Heat 1 teaspoon oil in a pan

Then saute ginger, green chilies and curry leaves (optional) until it begins to smell good. Turn off the stove.

Add red chili powder, garam masala and turmeric. Mix well.

Transfer mashed potatoes, peas, half teaspoon salt and coriander leaves. Squeeze some lemon juice if you like. Mix everything well. Taste test and add more salt if needed.

Make Stuffing

Arrange 3 bread slices on a chopping board or plate.

Optional - If you have green chutney or sauce, you can also smear that to one or both the slices.

Place the potato masala over 3 bread slices. Cover each slice with another one.

Press gently and cut each sandwich to 2 triangles. Set these aside.

Heat oil in a pan for shallow or deep frying. You can use as less as possible if using a nonstick pan.

While the oil heats prepare the batter. In another bowl, mix together besan, ajwain, red chili powder, salt, rice flour and turmeric.&nbsp;

Pour water just enough to make the batter that is neither too thick nor too thin. It must be similar to the mirchi bajji batter.

Check if the oil is hot by dropping a little amount of batter in the oil. The batter has to rise without browning. This is the right temperature.

Do this only when the oil is ready to fry. Place each sandwiched bread in the batter and gently coat it with the batter on both the sides. You may need to use both your hands.

Swipe off the excess batter and Gently slide this to the hot oil and do not disturb it for a minute.

You can add 2 or more pakoras in one batch depending on the size of your pan.

Fry bread pakora on a medium heat until golden on one side. Then turn them to the other side and fry till both the sides turn crisp and golden. Remove to a colander or kitchen tissue.

Ensure the oil is moderately hot and not extremely hot before you fry the next batch of bread pakora. If needed reduce the heat/flame before adding the next one.

Serve bread pakora hot or warm with green chutney or sauce.

How to Make Bread Pakora

For the air fryer method make the batter slightly thick and dip your potato filled sandwiches in the batter. Coat them with the batter on both the sides. Gently shake and place on the parchment paper.

Air fry at 200 C or 400 F for 8 mins. Gently loosen and remove with a wooden spatula and turn it to the other side. Air fry for another 6 to 7 mins. Adjust the timings slightly. The bread pakora covering has to turn golden and crisp.

Bread Pakora in Air Fryer

Bread Pakora (Bread Fritter) is a tasty snack that takes less than 20 mins to cook. Enjoy Bread Pakoras with hot beverages such as Tea or Coffee along with some Coriander Chutney or Tomato Sauce.

White Bread (Medium Slices)

Gram Flour (Besan)

g Green Chillies (Hari Mirch)

tsp Red Chillies Powder (Lal Mirch Powder)

tsp Turmeric Powder (Haldi Powder)

tsp Carom Seeds (Ajwain)

tsp Garam Masala

Coriander Leaves

Vegetable Oil (for Deep Fry)

tbsp Rice Flour (Chawal Ka Aata)

Finely chop Green chillies and Coriander leaves.

Now to prepare the batter, take Gram Flour, Rice flour, Red chillies powder, green chillies, coriander leaves, Garam Masala, Turmeric, Salt and Carom Seeds in a bowl and add 1.5 cup water to it.

Now mix all Ingredients properly so that there are no lump formations else it will spoil the experience. Your batter is now ready.

How to make Bread Pakora Batter

Cut each Bread slice into 4 pieces cutting diagonally. You can remove the border of the bread slices in case it is hard. Though some people like them anyways.

Take approx 2 cup Vegetable oil in a deep frying pan and put it on gas and switch it to high flame. This step you can do while you prepare the batter so that the oil is quite hot by now.

Once the oil is hot enough you can then start making Bread Pakora. To check if the oil is hot, take 1/4 tsp batter and drop it in the frying pan. If it makes intense fizzing sound and the batter drop immediately floats in the oil then it means oil is ready for frying.

Take Bread slices and wrap them well with batter such that they are covered completely. Now drop it in the hot oil. Be cautious of the hot oil spatter as they may cause burn. This may happen if you accidentally drop water droplets in the hot oil, so be careful.

While you fry, roll over Bread Pakoras so they get fried evenly on both sides. Fry Bread Pakora until they turn golden brown in colour. Once they get the required colour you can take them out using slotted turner or slotted spoon.

Your Bread Pakoras are now ready to be served. Before serving, sprinkle some Chat Masala and some herbs such as Parsley and Oregano on top of Bread Pakoras for added flavour.

How to make Bread Pakora

Bread pakora is a popular North Indian snack of bread fritters. Bread slices are stuffed with spiced mashed potatoes filling, batter-coated and then deep-fried.

Bread Pakora | Punjabi Bread Pakoda

potatoes (or 1 large potato

serrano peppers

coriander leaves (- chopped (cilantro leaves))

mint leaves (- chopped (optional))

red chilli powder (or cayenne pepper)

¼ teaspoon Garam Masala

mango powder ((amchur powder) or add as required)

salt

besan ((gram flour) - 100 to 110 grams)

carom seeds ((ajwain)

¼ tsp red chilli powder (or cayenne pepper)

turmeric powder (- optional)

¼ tsp Garam Masala

baking soda (- optional)

water (or add as required)

salt (as required)

oil (for deep frying - as required)

Boil or steam the potato in a pressure cooker or steamer till it is completely cooked. 

When the potato becomes warm, then peel it. Grate and keep aside. You can also mash and keep aside.

Add the coriander leaves, mint leaves, green chilli, red chilli powder, turmeric powder, amchur powder, salt to the grated potatoes.

Mix the spices &amp; herbs very well with the mashed potatoes. Check the seasonings and adjust accordingly. Keep aside.

Making potato stuffing

In a bowl, take the besan (gram flour), ajwain, red chilli powder, garam masala powder, asafoetida, baking soda (optional) and salt.

Now add around ½ cup of water and mix very well.

The batter should not be very thick nor too thin. If it is too thick, then add more water.

Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of hot oil when you keep the oil for deep frying in the batter. Mix well. Whisk briskly non-stop for 1 to 2 minutes to incorporate some air into the besan batter. 

Making batter

On the chopping board, slice the bread into triangle or rectangle slices.

Take around 2 to 3 tablespoons of the mashed potato mixture and spread it on the bread evenly.

Cover this potato stuffed slice with another slice. You now have a triangular bread sandwich. Just slightly press the sandwich.

Take the entire sandwich in your hand and dip it in the besan batter.

Coat the stuffed bread sandwich evenly with the besan batter. Be gentle with the sandwich. Take care not to keep the stuffed bread sandwich a long time in the gram flour batter as the bread can break.

Assembling

By now, your oil is hot and you can easily slid the besan batter coated bread sandwich in the oil.

Fry on a medium flame till they are crisp and golden brown.

Place them on kitchen paper towels so that excess oil is absorbed.

Serve bread pakora hot or warm with tomato sauce or with any chutney of your choice, or even coconut chutney.

Enjoy the bread pakoda in the rains with a cup of indian ginger tea or masala tea.
