Cheese straws are in my top ten all-time favourite recipes and are easy to make. For a little extra spice, sprinkle on some paprika or cayenne.

Easy cheese straws

300 grams/10½ oz all-butter puff pastry

egg yolks, beaten

150 grams/5½ oz cheddar, grated

paprika,

These puffed Cheese Straws are flavored with Gruyere and Parmesan. They&#x27;re really easy to make and disappear in a flash!

Puff Pastry Cheese Straws

puff pastry ((thawed from frozen)*)

water

gruyere cheese

parmesan cheese

cayenne pepper**

paprika**

Preheat the oven to 375F. Line a sheet pan with parchment paper if desired (it&#x27;s not necessary, there is enough fat to prevent sticking).

Roll out the puff pastry about 1/8 inch thick. Whisk the egg with the water and brush the puff pastry with the egg wash.

Sprinkle the entire surface with the cheeses, cayenne, and paprika. Press the cheese and spices into the puff pastry.

Cut the pastry into 3/4 inch thick strips using a pizza cutter or knife. Twist each strip and lay it on the baking sheet.

Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown and puffy. Enjoy!

Cheese Straw Cookies

(8-ounce) block sharp cheddar cheese

unsalted butter, room temperature

salt

garlic powder

cayenne powder

all-purpose flour

Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. Use a box grater to shred the cheese.

Use a mixer to blend the cheese and butter together until smooth. Add the salt, garlic powder, and cayenne and mix to combine. Gradually add the flour and mix well.

Use a 1 1/2 tablespoon cookie scoop to scoop the dough out and place it about 2-inches apart on the prepared pan. If desired, use a fork to gently press the tines into the top of each cookie. Dipping the fork in water will help if the dough sticks.

Bake for 20 to 30 minutes or until golden brown. Bake shorter for a crispy exterior and chewy interior. Bake longer for crispy throughout. Cool for about 10 minutes on the baking sheet before moving to a cooling rack. Work in batches until all the dough has been cooked. Store on the counter in an airtight container for up to a week.

They were delicious &amp; got even better after they aged a day or two. Followed your recipe step by step &amp; had no problems.

Well - I just got a copy of this from my friend who gave me some for Christmas and they were so good!  So - making my own!  And for...the naysayers.  Seriously - would you have said something like that directly to Stacey's face?  I think - hope? - not.  So - why does it seem okay to do it in a comment.  So so rude - our society is becoming...rude! Is the cayenne pepper supposed to be hot?

How can i modify to make it less spicy and more kid friendly?

I, too, had very dry dough; the consistency of fine bread crumbs!   My solution of melting 1 Tbsp of butter and drizzling over the dough, by teaspoonfuls,  and mixing in well, by hand; made it the perfect consistency!
Used 1t. Garlic salt and omitted the plain salt, 1/2 t. Cayenne pepper, plus I added a few sprinkles of both paprika and ground pepper.  Also used extra sharp cheese.  Excellent!  Thanks for the time saving delicious recipe!!

Guyanese cheese straws are cheesy, savory crispy sticks with a hint of spice. They are meant to be shared with many so serve them at your next party or social gathering for a delectable treat!

Guyanese Cheese Straws

lb Sharp (Extra Sharp) Cheddar Cheese ((Use aged cheddar if you can))

Butter, softened ((6 ounces))

spicy brown mustard

peppers

flour

salt (Optional)

Preheat oven to 400 °F

Finely grate cheese, then add to a food processor, followed by the butter, spicy brown mustard, wiri wiri pepper

Blend together until you are left with a smooth, lump free cheese paste

Then add the flour and salt and continue to mix until fully combined into a smooth spreadable dough

Making the dough in a Food Processor

Grate the cheese using a the fine shred side on a box grater, combine cheese, butter, mustard, pepper and salt (if using) and mash together with a fork until completely smooth. You may also use a hand mixer to mix it into a smooth paste

Then add the flour about 1/2 cup at a time and fold into the cheese paste until a smooth and spreadable dough forms

Making the dough without a food processor

Add the dough to a pastry bag with a star tip (I used an open start tip in size 4B), then pipe onto a greased baking sheet into 3 to 6 inch strips

Bake at 400 °F for 10 to 15 minutes, or as soon as it starts to brown. Remove from the oven and allow to cool before serving
