Torrijas are a delicious Spanish style French toast that is typical around Easter. Here's my favorite torrijas recipe!

Torrijas: Spanish Style French Toast with Cinnamon and Honey

eggs

(about a quart) of whole milk

sugar (200 grams)

cinnamon

honey

Extra Virgin Olive Oil ((good quality))

lemon peel

orange peel

cardamom seeds ((optional))

star anise ((optional))

bar of slightly stale French bread

Bring the milk, ½ cup of sugar, lemon and orange peel, and spices (cardamom seeds and star anise) to a slow simmer.

Cut the bread in thick slices.

When the milk mixture has been simmering for about 15 minutes, turn off the heat and soak the slices of bread in this mixture. Be careful not to completely wet them to the point that they will break apart, but try to get them to absorb as much milk as possible.

Let the slices of wet bread rest and cool (some liquid may be lost).

Beat the eggs in a shallow bowl and dip the bread slices in the egg mixture. In the meantime, heat up about ½ an inch of the olive oil in a deep, heavy pan on medium-high heat.

Fry the slices two by two, flipping them halfway so that both sides are nice and crisp.

Let the torrijas rest on paper towels to absorb excess oil. In another bowl mix the remaining sugar (1/2 cup) with the cinnamon.

Cover the slices in the cinnamon sugar mixture and reserve.

Finally, make the syrup. Take the remaining cinnamon and sugar from coating the torrijas and add it to a medium-sized pot. Add a bit more sugar to completely cover the bottom of the pot if necessary.

Add 2 cups of warm water to the sugar and bring it to a boil.

Add the honey (you can add more or less depending on preference).

Allow the syrup to simmer for about 30 minutes until it reduces to a syrup-like consistency. It won’t be a very thick syrup, but it shouldn’t be too watery.

Take the syrup off of the heat and after about 15 minutes spoon it over the French toast. The torrijas should be completely soaked in syrup. Allow them to completely cool before putting them into the refrigerator.

Refrigerate the torrijas for at least 4 hours, but preferably overnight.

Enjoy within two or three days for best quality! (I doubt they’ll last that long anyway!)

My kids love this recipe. I cut the recipe at 1/3rd per person and made this for 2 people 2 slices each. For the cinnamon sugar, I mixed 1/2 cup of sugar and 2 teaspoons of cinnamon and had leftover.

sugar ((50 grams))

milk ((177 milliliters) Sub in some cream

If you&#x27;re using a loaf, cut your bread into roughly half inch slices. Add a pat of butter onto your pan and place over medium heat.

In a large bowl whisk together the sugar and eggs. Add in the milk and cream, vanilla and cinnamon and whisk until completely combined.

Soak the first slice or two of bread in the custard and once it&#x27;s absorbed a good amount flip over to soak the other side.

Carefully transfer the bread to your hot pan and cook until golden brown. Flip over and cook other side until golden. Serve warm.

Cinnamon Sugar French Toast Sticks

Silk Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk

brown sugar (packed)

sugar

vanilla extract

cinnamon (or

nutmeg

butter (for griddle or pan)

maple syrup for serving (or your favorite topping)

Preheat electric griddle (takes about 10 minutes) or preheat a non-stick skillet over medium heat a minute or two before you’ll need it; set aside.

In a large mixing bowl, combine eggs, milk, sugars, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and whisk until combined.

Butter the griddle or skillet.

Dip 1 slice of bread into the coating mixture for about 5 to 10 seconds, flipping over once, and making sure it’s well-coated before adding to griddle; don’t let bread become overly saturated because it’ll break and fall apart. Repeat with all slices of bread until coating mixture is gone.

Cook for about 3 minutes per side, or until as done and browned as desired, flipping and rotating the sticks so all sides are cooked and browned. Add more butter to griddle or skillet as necessary and wipe griddle with paper towel as necessary to remove black bits.

Serve immediately with maple syrup or your favorite topping.

First of all, I love your name! I made these French Toast Sticks today and love the recipe! I did not use the Silk milk, I tried it once and had an allergic reaction (? I know! Allergic to Silk milk? But, at 73, I have been through this enough that I just say Okay - no silk milk!) I just used regular 2% milk instead. They had a nice big loaf of French bread on sale, perfect! I thought, on sale, it's probably already stale, so I just started cutting the sticks. Wrong. The bread was really quite fresh, so after I cut the sticks, I placed them on racks and left them a couple of hours to dry. Perfect. Your egg mixture was perfectly spiced and flavored. I cut 20 sticks (4 extra for quality control sampling when they were done, right?) and had just enough coating mixture. I did have to dip mine in maple syrup, and they are divine! (They got a paws up from the dogs, too!) Sitting back, feeling quite pleased with myself right now, thanks to you. Breakfast is done - no dishes in the morning - it will be ready in virtually seconds - and delicious! Great way to start the day!

Cinnamon French Toast with a Honey Cinnamon Sauce that adds sweetness with a hint of cinnamon spice brightened with a dash of zesty lemon undertones!

Cinnamon Honey French Toast

french bread, brioche bread

milk

heavy cream

tsp salt

BeeMaid creamed honey

unsalted butter

lemon juice

In a medium bowl add eggs, milk, heavy cream, vanilla, cinnamon and salt.  Mix well using a whisk to ensure eggs and milk are combined and cinnamon does not clump together. 

Place a slice or two of the bread in the egg mixture submerging to fully cover and flip over once to ensure it is covered well.  Bread should be allowed to soak in the egg mixture for about 10-15 seconds to soak in the liquid that gives French Toast it&#x27;s rich custard-like texture.

Add about two teaspoons of butter to a non-stick pan over medium heat.

Place the bread in the pan and cook for about 3 minutes per side.  Every stove is different so if you find that the inside of the toast is not cooking well enough you can also place a lid over the top of the pan. Doing so will raise the temperature inside the pan a bit without the need to turn up the heat and risk scorching the bread.

Remove bread from heat and serve with a generous helping of the delicious Cinnamon Honey Sauce.  Continue the soaking and cooking process until everyone has a serving of this delicious and decadent breakfast treat!

Cinnamon French Toast

In a small saucepan over medium heat add creamed honey, unsalted butter, cinnamon and lemon juice. Stir often until butter and honey are melted and cinnamon and lemon juice are combined.

Using a whisk slowly add the heavy cream to the honey mixture stirring constantly.  Then let come to a soft boil for about 1 minute.  Remove from heat and continue to whisk for one minute.  Let cool and rest. 

Serve by pouring over the already made Cinnamon French Toast.  Enjoy!
