Creamed Peas

(10 ounce) package frozen peas, thawed

butter

all-purpose flour

salt

pepper

whole milk, half-and-half or heavy cream

Cook peas according to package instructions. Drain and transfer to a bowl.

Meanwhile, in a saucepan, melt butter over low heat. Whisk in flour, salt and pepper until blended. Gradually add milk, stirring for 1-2 minutes (or until thickened).

Pour sauce over warm peas and toss to coat.

Melt butter.

Melt butter over medium high heat in a medium sized saucepan.

Whisk in flour.

Whisk the flour and garlic powder (if using) into the butter until incorporated and smooth.

Add milk.

Slowly whisk in the milk and cook, stirring frequently, over medium high heat until the mixture has thickened, about 6 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.

Cook peas.

Add the peas and cook, stirring frequently, until the peas are heated through, about 4 minutes.

Heavy cream.

Stir in heavy cream and check for seasonings.

Garnish.

Garnish with additional pepper, butter, fresh chopped chives or dill. Serve and enjoy!

In a medium size saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add onions cooking until translucent, about 2 minutes, Add flour, stirring until absorbed.

Gradually whisk in half and half. Bring to a gentle boil then add salt, black pepper, garlic, onion powder and nutmeg. Add peas, mix until coated with sauce.

Cook over medium heat for 5-7 minutes or just until peas are tender. Stir occasionally.

Serve immediately.

Creamed Peas and New Potatoes come together quickly on the stove top and pair perfectly along side any entree.  This old fashioned side dish tastes just like Mom or Grandma made it.

Creamed Peas and New Potatoes - Creamed Peas Recipe Without Cream

potatoes (about 10)

green onions, sliced

margarine

Tablespoon flour

Scrub potatoes.  Add potatoes to a saucepan or skillet with water.  Boil until fork tender.

Turn off heat; add frozen peas, stir.  Immediately drain off the water and add peas and potatoes back to the same skillet or pan.  Put on the lid and set aside.

In a small saucepan, cook onions in the margarine until tender (just a couple minutes).

Add flour, salt and pepper, and cook until lightly browned. Add milk, cooking and stirring until thickened and bubbly.  Continue to cook and stir for an additional 1-2 minutes.  Taste the white sauce.  If bland, add more salt and pepper.

Combine the white sauce and the vegetables. Stir and serve.

Old-Fashioned Creamed Peas uses frozen peas that is jazzed up with a white sauce made of butter, half and half and flour.

green peas

Cook peas according to package instructions. I prefer this method. In a small saucepan, boil a small amount of salted water (approximately 4 cups). Pour the boiling water over the frozen peas just until they are covered. You may not need all the water. Let sit for 3 to 5 minutes or until cooked.

In a medium saucepan, melt butter. Add flour and stir until smooth. Let cook for additional 30 seconds to remove raw flour taste.

Over medium heat, slowly add in half and half to the butter/flour mixture while constantly whisking. Bring to a boil while constantly whisking, and let boil for approximately three minutes until it thickens.

Add salt and pepper to the sauce.

Drain the peas, and add to the white sauce; stir.&nbsp; Cover with a lid and cook until the peas are hot and the sauce is creamy, approximately 2 to 3 minutes.&nbsp;

Taste, add more salt and pepper if needed.&nbsp;

Place all of the ingredients in the Instant Pot and secure the lid.

Turn the pressure to HIGH and cook for 3 minutes. When the cook cycle is complete, perform a Quick Release.

Open the lid, stir, and enjoy!

Instant Pot Instructions

Place all of the ingredients in a medium pot over medium heat. Stir until the cream cheese melts and the peas are coated in the cream. Enjoy!
