Cheesy Scalloped Potatoes

lbs Russet Potatoes peeled and sliced in 1/8 inch rounds

lbs Yukon Gold Potatoes peeled and sliced in 1/8 inch rounds

onion

butter

garlic

all purpose flour

onion powder

smoked paprika

parsley

sea salt

black pepper

chicken broth

2% milk

sharp cheddar (reserve 1/2 cup for top)

freshly grated white cheddar (reserve 1/4 cup for top)

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.  Spray 9&#215;13 inch casserole with olive oil or nonstick cooking spray.

In large skillet over medium low melt butter. Add minced garlic and saute for 1 minute;  stirring constantly. Slowly whisk in flour; cook for 3 to 4 minutes whisking constantly.  Whisk in onion powder, paprika, dried parsley, salt and freshly ground black pepper.  Slowly whisk in chicken broth and milk; alternating between the two.  Whisk until smooth; simmer for 5 minutes. Turn heat to low and slowly whisk in 1/2 cups sharp cheddar and 3/4 cup white cheddar.  Simmer while you layer the potatoes.

Layer 1/2 of the potatoes and 1/2 of the onions in the casserole dish.  Pour 1/2 of the cheese sauce over the potatoes.  Layer the rest of the potatoes and onions and and pour the rest of the cheese sauce over. Top with the remaining reserved cheese. Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes.  Uncover and bake for another 30 minutes or until it is nicely browned on the top and bubbly.

Scalloped potatoes are a great side dish to any meal. Potatoes, layered with onion, flour, seasonings and butter, baked, and topped with a little cheese... ready to devour!

Easy Scalloped Potatoes Recipe

1.5 lb potatoes (about 5 medium - you need 3 cups of sliced potatoes)

Tbs all purpose flour

Salt and pepper

milk

Tbs butter (cubed (plus more for greasing dish))

cheddar cheese

Tbs chopped parsley

Peel the potatoes, then using a mandolin, or sharp knife - do a medium slice on your potatoes. They should be between a quarter and a half inch thick).

Slice the onions thinly.

Grease an 8 x 8 baking dish, and preheat the oven to 350F.

Layer the potatoes, onions, flour, salt and pepper, about 3 times. On the last layer - add the butter.

Heat the milk til it's hot, but not boiling.

Pour the milk over the top of the dish.

Top with cheese.&nbsp;

Bake until potatoes are tender (about 50 minutes).

Uncover and bake until top browns

Remove from the oven, and let it stand while the sauce thickens.

Devour (and hide the leftovers for yourself).

Made this tonight. Quite delicious. Will definitely make it again in the future. I used quite a large baking dish and so only had three layers. It only needed about an hour of baking time to be done.

I have finally found my “go-to” recipe for scalloped potatoes. I changed the dairy to 2% milk because I wanted less fat content. I changed the heat to 375, still cooked them for 1 hour and 15 minutes, but they were probably cooked at 1 hour. I added grated Parmesan cheese between the layers. This recipe was fantastic, my guests took some home in a care package.  Thank you for this recipe!

I’ve made this a few times and it’s a hit every time. I used more garlic and I have Celiac so I subbed the AP flour and chicken stock with Gluten-Free AP flour and Gluten-Free chicken stock for the same result. Line your oven with foil if you are anywhere close to the top of the pan with your ingredients. It WILL boil over and you’re gonna have a bad time. It looks like a mess when you take it out of the oven, but it all comes together in the 15 minutes of cooling time.

Super yummy. The recipe does not even include the flour. Completely forgot it, but eventually found the flour in the corner waiting to be used. Also I used around 2 1/2 cups of cheese, because 1 cup just was not enough.  Otherwise, a thumbs up dish.

I omitted the bacon and cheese, instead just sprinkled some grated Parmesan for the last 15 min. Also added v thinly sliced onion between layers. Glad I read the reviews - used a glass dish and reduced heat by 25 degrees per the comments, and also used a paper towel to dab away some grease at the end. This was EXCELLENT!! Definitely keeping this recipe :)

Made this over the weekend.  I used half sharp cheddar and half pepper jack cheese.  Everyone loved it.

This recipe kick major a..  we ate every bite. I added fresh lump blue crab meat to it. Use less bacon and cook all bacon fat till crisp. Use a low fat cheese also will help prevent to much oil in the end.

Super delicious! Needed to lay a paper towel on the top at the end. There was a lot of grease. All my guests enjoyed it and asked for the recipe.  Will definitely be making this again!

The best homemade scalloped potatoes with garlic and rosemary. Creamy and cheesy with a crispy Parmesan topping, this recipe is quick, easy, impressive!

Scalloped Potatoes

Yukon gold potatoes (scrubbed with peels on*)

extra virgin olive oil

salt

goat cheese

Parmesan cheese

rosemary

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Lightly grease a 1 1/2  to 2-quart casserole dish with baking spray. Set aside.

With a mandoline or sharp chef's knife, slice the potatoes into very thin slices, 1/8-inch-thick or less. Place the potatoes in a large bowl, drizzle with olive oil, then sprinkle with the minced garlic, salt, and pepper. Toss to coat the slices as evenly as you can.

Spread 1/3 of the potato slices in the bottom of the prepared dish. Crumble half of the goat cheese over the top. Repeat with the next 1/3 of the potatoes, then the remaining goat cheese, then finish by layering on the final third of the potatoes. The potatoes may discard some liquid as they rest in the bowl. If this happens, simply leave the liquid in the bottom bowl and shake the potato slices gently in your hands to remove excess liquid before layering them in the dish.

Pour the milk evenly over the top of the dish, then sprinkle with the Parmesan cheese. Cover the dish with foil, bake for 30 minutes, then uncover and bake for 15 additional minutes, until the top has browned. Scatter the rosemary over the top. Serve hot.

Easy Cheesy Scalloped Potatoes are very similar to Potatoes Au Gratin because they are drenched in a creamy, cheesy, garlicky cream sauce and then covered in more cheese! They make a perfect comfort food side dish for all your holiday dinners!

Easy Cheesy Scalloped Potatoes

Tablespoons butter ((1.5 ounces))

onion, chopped

garlic,

heavy cream ((20 ounces))

Tablespoons all-purpose flour ((1.5 ounces))

salt and pepper

thyme

cayenne pepper ((optional))

cheddar cheese, grated ((12 ounces block cheese

Tablespoon chives, chopped ((optional))

Peel potatoes, if desired. (Optional.) Thinly slice potatoes (1/8" to 1/4") in even slices.&nbsp;

Add 3 Tablespoons butter to a saucepan over medium heat. Stir until melted.

Add the chopped onions and stir for about 3 minutes until the onions are soft.

Add minced garlic and thyme and stir for about one minute.

Stir in 3 Tablespoons flour.

Pour in heavy cream.

Add salt, pepper, thyme, and cayenne and stir.

Stir in 2 cups (8-ounces) of shredded sharp cheddar cheese. Stir until the cheese is melted and the sauce is smooth. Remove from heat.

Butter a baking dish or spray a baking dish with cooking spray.

Layer half of the sliced potatoes on the bottom of the baking dish

Pour half of the cheesy garlic cream sauce over the top of the potatoes.

Sprinkle with 1/2 of the remaining shredded cheddar cheese.

Repeat above 3 steps for the next layer.

Sprinkle the top of the scalloped potatoes with chopped chives, thyme, or chopped parsley.

Cover the casserole dish with aluminum foil.

Bake for 40 minutes in a preheated 375-degree F oven.

Remove the foil.

Sprinkle the remainder of the shredded sharp cheddar cheese over the top of the scalloped potatoes.

Bake for 20 more minutes or until the cheese is melted and the potatoes are cooked through.

Remove from oven.&nbsp;Garnish the Scalloped Potatoes with chopped chives, parsley, or thyme before serving.

I made this today. Cut the recipe in half as a full pan would have been too much. And it was so delicious. I didn’t have sharp cheddar so used the mild cheddar I had on hand   Left out the thyme as I don’t care for it.

First of all, I halved this recipe since I am only cooking for two people. The size turned out to be perfect considering I ate half the pan... yeah, it's that good. I saw someone asking about the seasoning ratio on here and I used 1/2 top of salt, 1/4 tsp black pepper, and 1/8 tsp cayenne (recipe cut in half). I only had about half a cup of heavy cream because I haven't gone grocery shopping in...a while. I upped the butter and the flour and the cheese sauce turned out perfectly. I also used a block of gouda cheese instead of Cheddar, again, because no groceries. Let me just tell you, when the timer went off and I opened the oven I smiled. The cheese has crusted around the edges and browned on the top perfectly.  That crust went all the way to the bottom and was sooo unbelievably good. I wish I hadn't halved the recipe and forgotten about the meatloaf. All I want to do is eat these potatoes.

I’ve made these before and they turned out AMAZING!! For some reason when I made them this time the sauce wouldn’t thicken after baking them. The flavour was still good but consistency was off, and I made it the same way as previously… any ideas why?

Spread the potatoes evenly into the casserole dish, patting them evenly into the dish, then sprinkle on remaining 1 cup cheddar cheese.

Cover tightly with foil and bake at 375˚F for 65-75 minutes or until tender when pierced with a knife. then remove foil and bake an additional 5 minutes. Broil on high heat for about 2-3 minutes at the end to lightly brown the cheese crust. Rest for 10-15 minutes then garnish with chives to serve.
