My basic recipe for the most DELICIOUS Easy Baked Tempeh!

Easy Baked Tempeh

1 package of tempeh, roughly 8 oz

soy sauce

apple cider vinegar

2 cloves of garlic, finely minced or 1 teaspoon of garlic powder

teaspoon of liquid smoke, optional but highly recommended

olive oil

maple syrup

For the optional sauce: corn starch

Prepare the tempeh by cutting it into cubes, triangles, or thin slices. See photo above for reference.*

Make the marinade by whisking together the soy sauce, apple cider vinegar, garlic, liquid smoke, olive oil, and maple syrup in a shallow bowl. Toss in the tempeh and let marinate for 30 minutes or even a few hours.

When ready to cook, pre-heat the oven to 400 degrees F and line a large baking tray with parchment paper.

Line the tempeh pieces on one side of the baking sheet and pour about 1/2 teaspoon of the marinade on each piece of the tempeh. As desired, you can reserve the marinade and use it to make a sauce at the end which is what I did. Directions below.

Bake tempeh for 15 minutes*, flipping halfway through.

Optional sauce: whisk together 1 1/2 tablespoons of cornstarch with 1/4 cup of water. Mix the remaining marinade and the cornstarch slurry in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stirring constantly, cook until thickened, about 5 minutes. It’ll go from liquid to a thick sauce all of a sudden so make sure to watch it!

Tempeh 101

Sticky, sweet, sesame coated general tso's tempeh is&nbsp; vegan, WFPB friendly, oil-free optional and only takes 10 minutes to make. This high protein, plant-based dish is a great healthy asian alternative to your favorite take-out food.&nbsp;

General Tso's Tempeh

tempeh (I used an 8 oz package)

sesame seeds (to sprinkle on top)

green onions (garnish)

coconut aminos

tbsp rice vinegar

potato starch (can sub arrowroot or tapioca starch)

sesame oil or sesame paste

ginger powder

garlic powder

red chili flakes (optional

Cut tempeh into triangles and grill in a pan on medium to high heat on golden brown on each side (about 3-4 minutes per side)

While tempeh cooks, add all the sauce ingredients into a bowl and whisk together.&nbsp;

When the tempeh is totally done cooking, turn the stove down to a low simmer and add the sauce. Make sure to coat the tempeh evenly in the sauce.&nbsp;

Continuously combine the tempeh with the sauce - you will notice it will almost immediately start to thicken.&nbsp;

Once the tempeh is evenly coated, remove from heat and serve!&nbsp;

Sprinkle sesame seeds on top and garnish with green onions.&nbsp;

Mix the marinade ingredients

Mix the marinade ingredients in a bowl until well combined. Ensure the sugar is fully dissolved.

Slice the tempeh as

Marinade the tempeh slices

Marinade the tempeh slices for 20 minutes.

How to make Tempeh Bacon

Heat a little extra

Heat a little extra virgin olive oil in a non-stick pan and fry the tempeh for around 2 minutes on each side. It's ready when both sides are golden brown and crispy.

Place the tempeh slices

Place the tempeh slices on a baking sheet and bake in the centre of the oven for 10-15 minutes until golden brown.
