Step 1

Make the dressing: Whisk the vinegar, oil, maple syrup, Dijon, and salt together in a large bowl. Add the red onion and stir to combine. Let sit at least 10 minutes for the flavors to meld. Meanwhile, prepare the cabbage.

Step 2

Make the salad: Cut the cabbage into eight wedges through the core, then cut the core from each piece. Thinly slice the cabbage wedges crosswise to shred.

Step 3

Add the shredded cabbage, almonds, cranberries, and parsley to the dressing and toss to combine. Taste and season with salt and pepper as needed.

The idea of serving salad at Thanksgiving is, in theory, a good one — you want something light, crunchy, and refreshing to balance out the roast turkey and rich sides. The reality, however, is that most salads need to be tossed at the last second and eaten quickly before wilting — not the best choice when there's a lot going on in the kitchen already and the food might sit out for a few hours. This easy, colorful slaw is the answer to this dilemma. It won't wilt like other green salads and can sit out for a while, making it a great addition to the Thanksgiving buffet.

Crunchy Thanksgiving Slaw

Watergate Salad is loaded with pistachio pudding, crushed pineapple, miniature marshmallows, and pecans. It’s perfect for a Spring get-together or mid-week dessert.

pineapple (20 ounces, undrained)

pistachio

whipped topping (thawed)

marshmallows

In a large bowl, stir together the pineapple and pistachio pudding mixes until combined. Use a rubber spatula to fold in the whipped topping until no streaks remain. Fold in marshmallows and pecans. Cover and refrigerate for at least 3 hours before serving.

(5 1/3 tablespoons) unsalted butter, melted

Worcestershire sauce

Place the pecans in a large mixing bowl. In another bowl, whisk together the melted butter, Worcestershire sauce, salt, garlic powder, ground mustard, Tabasco, and cayenne. Pour the butter mixture over the pecans and stir until well combined. Taste a pecan and add more Tabasco or cayenne if desired.

Arrange the pecans on a large sheet pan and bake for 20-22 minutes until toasted and lightly browned, stirring halfway cooking time to prevent burning. Remove from the oven and cool completely, tossing occasionally, before transferring to an airtight container.

Delicious but I cut the recipe in half and (hard to believe) must have miscalculated the butter because the nuts were swimming in it. I remedied that by sopping up the excess then dumping the nuts into a huge flour saçk towel and shaking. Then I had to refresh the spices. Next time I&#39;ll mix the Worcestershire and Tabasco with a small amount of olive oil, toss, then sprinkle on the cayenne and salt and toss again.

These are good but the Worcestershire takes them a little too far into Chex Mix territory

I just made these for my dialysis snack. I can&#39;t have very many nuts, but I can have pecans! I just tasted them, and I don&#39;t think they&#39;ll last very long lol They are really good! Thank you for the recipe!!
