Perfect Homemade Sopapilla Recipe - Light and airy, slightly sweet Mexican restaurant-style sopapillas (AKA fry bread) are easy to make at home. They are delicious served warm for dessert with honey on the side!

Perfect Homemade Sopapilla Recipe

Set out a stand mixer. Place the flour, lard, baking powder, sugar, cinnamon, and salt in the bowl. Pour the warm milk over the lard. Then beat on medium until very smooth. If the dough doesn’t quite come together add another small splash of milk and beat again.

Wrap the dough in plastic and let it rest for 20-30 minutes.

Meanwhile, set a large 6-8 quart sauce pot over medium heat. Add the oil to the pot. Attach a frying thermometer to the side of the pot, making sure the tip is down in the oil. Bring the temperature to 375 degrees F. Set a holding plate on the side lined with paper towels.

Once the dough has had time to rest, sprinkle a clean work surface with extra flour. Roll the dough ball out into a large rectangle, 1/8 -1 /4 inch thick. Using a pizza cutter to cut the dough into 3 inch squares.

Working in batches, carefully drop 3-5 squares in the hot oil. Let them rise to the surface of the oil, then use tongs to flip them over. Fry for 1-2 minutes per side until light golden brown. (They will look darker out of the oil.)

Move to a hold plate. Repeat with the remaining sopapillas.

Serve warm, with a side of honey.

Combine dry ingredients and add warm water. Mix with your hands until dough forms. Let sit for 5 minutes.

Break off the dough into golf-ball sized balls (or even a tid bigger).

Roll dough into ½-inch thick circles that are about 6 inches in diameter.

Fry each piece in a medium sauce pan with hot oil (that is about 1-2 inches deep). Fry until dough is golden and poofs up, and then fry on the other side keeping it in the oil. Set on a paper towel to drain oil.

Bread

Put soaked beans in crock pot, cover with water. Cook on low until tender (for 4-6 hours). 2 hours before beans are done, toss in 2-3 slices of chopped bacon. *You know beans are done when they start breaking up. You can also use beans from the can for an easier version.

In the meantime. Cook up 1 lb of hamburger. Once beans are done, toss in hamburger.

Spread beans over your fry bread and add desired toppings.

Fry Bread is a beloved tradition in the United States. Serve it up savory as Navajo Tacos or go the sweet side and serve it up with a little honey butter and powdered sugar.

Indian Fry Bread

In a large mixing bowl, stir together the flour, salt, and baking powder. Gradually add in the water, mixing with a spoon or your hands until combined. It will be sticky.

Drizzle 2-3 tablespoons of oil over the dough to keep it from drying out. Cover and let rest 2 hours. This is not a risen dough so the dough will not rise, but it does need to rest.

Pull off golf ball sized pieces of dough and stretch or roll out until very thin, without ripping it. The thinner the better.

Pour enough vegetable oil into a pot to cover it with 2 inches of oil. Heat to 350 degrees F.

Working one at a time, fry the dough in the hot oil until golden brown, flipping halfway through. Transfer to a paper towel lined plate to drain.

To make the steak mix all the spices together, excluding the taco sauce, and rub over the flank steak on both sides. Grill the steak to your preference, I grilled mine to medium rare. After it's grilled, cover it with aluminum foil and let it rest for about 10 minutes, during which time you can make the dough.

Pour the yeast over the warm water in a small bowl.

In the bowl of your mixer, add the flour and salt and mix. Add the olive oil and using the dough hook, mix for about a min.

Add the yeast mixture to the flour mixture and mix until well incorporated. You can probably get about 6 to 8 tacos out of this dough, so if you're not going to fry all of them, you can freeze half. Cut the dough into about 6 or 8 equal pieces, depending on how big you want each taco and roll each piece with a rolling pin so that it's about 1/4 of an inch in thickness.

In a large frying pan heat enough vegetable oil so that it's 1/2 inch deep. Fry 1 or 2 of the rolled out dough pieces, depending on how big your frying pan is. Fry until golden on both sides. When done place over paper towels.

While the dough is frying, cut the steak into thin slices. Place steak into a bowl and pour taco sauce over and toss so that each piece is fully coated. If you need more sauce, feel free to add more.

To serve, top each piece of fried bread with steak, freshly shredded mozzarella cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, green onions and cilantro.

In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, salt, and baking powder.  Mix until combined.

Slowly add in hot water and continuously mix with a wooden spoon until the dough comes together.  It will be quite sticky.

Cover the dough and let it sit for 60 minutes.

Once dough is done sitting, divide it into 12 even pieces and stretch each out until it is very thin.  Make sure to avoid letting the dough rip.  It is okay if the dough isn't perfectly shaped.

Add enough oil to either a deep fryer or a large pot to be at least 3 inches deep.  Bring the oil up to medium-high heat.

Place one piece of the dough into the hot oil at a time and leave it until it is golden brown on the bottom before flipping.  Once both sides of the dough are completely cooked, drain off excess oil and then transfer to a plate lined with paper towel.  Repeat with each of the pieces of dough.

Yes eating healthy is great and all but sometimes we need some all-out comfort food like so.&nbsp;Soft and tender fry bread is topped with a hearty, seasoned ground beef mixture and finished with lots of fresh taco toppings. Mom’s Navajo Tacos and Indian Fry Bread

(15 oz) can dark red kidney beans, drained and rinsed

sauce

(4 oz) can diced green chilis

Salt and pepper, (to taste)

Romaine or Iceberg lettuce, (chopped)

Shredded cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese

Roma tomatoes, (diced)

Sour cream

black olives and chopped cilantro ((optional))

tsp rapid rise or active dry yeast

tsp salt

milk ((110 degrees))

butter

Vegetable oil, (for frying)

Heat olive oil in a 12-inch non-stick skillet over medium-high heat. Add onions and saute 2 minutes, add garlic and saute 20 seconds. Scoot mixture to the side then crumble beef into skillet.&nbsp;

Season with salt and pepper and cook stirring occasionally and breaking up beef when stirring, until beef has browned and cooked through. Drain fat from beef and return to skillet.&nbsp;

Stir in chili powder, cumin, paprika, kidney beans, canned diced tomatoes and green chilis then season mixture with salt and pepper to taste.&nbsp;

Cover and simmer for 10-15 minutes (if you used the tomato sauce you can add in a few tbsp of water to thin a little if needed).&nbsp;

Using a slotted spoon, spoon mixture over fry bread, then top with lettuce, cheese, tomatoes and sour cream (and any of the other optional toppings listed). Serve immediately.

Navajo Taco Filling

In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, yeast and salt. Whisk melted butter into warm milk and pour milk mixture into dry ingredients.

&nbsp;Stir until mixture comes together and slightly forms a ball, dough should be fairly sticky (if needed you can add in a little more flour or a little more water to reach a good consistency but try not to overwork the dough).

Cover dough with plastic wrap and allow to rest 5 - 10 minutes.&nbsp;

Heat 1 inch of oil in a large cast iron skillet to 350 - 360 degrees over stove top.

Divide rested dough into 8 equal pieces.&nbsp;

Working with floured hands and one piece of dough at a time (keep other pieces covered with plastic wrap), pat dough out on a lightly floured surface into a 6-inch circle and gently drop into hot oil, and cook until golden brown, then flip and cook opposite side until golden brown.

Remove from oil and drain onto a plate or baking sheet lined with paper towels.&nbsp;

Serve warm with Navajo taco filling.*

Navajo Fry Bread

In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder and salt. Add the warm water and mix using a fork until a dough forms.  Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5 minutes, then transfer to a clean bowl and cover tightly in plastic wrap.  Let the dough rest for 10 minutes. 

Divide the dough into 8 equal sections by pinching off golf-ball sized balls of dough, then pat and roll out the dough balls into roughly 6-inch discs on a lightly floured surface.  Keep them covered with plastic wrap while you prepare to fry them.

Heat 3 cups of oil in a large skillet or frying pan over medium heat for about 5 minutes until the oil temperature reaches between 350 and 360 degrees F.  Working in batches, fry each disc in the hot oil until the dough is golden brown on one side, then carefully flip with tongs and fry on the other side. Set on a paper towel to drain oil and stick in a warm oven to stay hot while the other fry bread is cooked.

In a large skillet, heat the oil over medium-high heat, then add the onions and cook for 2-3 minutes, just until they begin to soften.  Add the meat and brown with the onions.

When the meat is no longer pink, add all of the spices, kidney beans, tomatoes, and chilies, and decrease the heat to medium-low.  Stir everything together, then cover and simmer for 10 minutes, then use to top Indian fry bread for Navajo tacos.

Add any toppings you like to the base of fry bread and taco mixture, piling it high.

Yeah, that&#039;s right...bread made with potatoes. Historically speaking, potatoes probably made their way into Hungarian breads like langos as a fill-in for wheat when there wasn’t a lot of wheat around, such as during wartime and famine.In addition to being just plain delicious, potatoes serve a function other than flavor: Adding potatoes, or even potato flour or freeze-dried flakes, can also make a bread stay soft longer. This recipe first appeared in Season 2 of Good Eats: The Return.

Hungarian Potato Langos

russet potatoes

all-purpose flour,

whole milk

instant yeast

Peel the potatoes and cut into 1-inch cubes. Measure out 580 grams (1 1/4 pounds)Save any remaining potatoes for another use. of the peeled and cubed pieces and transfer to a medium saucepan. Cover the potatoes with 1 inch of water and place over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer until soft, 10 to 12 minutes.

While the potatoes are boiling, deposit the flour, milk, 1 tablespoon of the oil, yeast, salt, and sugar in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Don’t worry about turning on the mixer yet. (This recipe works best using a large, professional-series mixer. If using a smaller mixer, keep a hand on it while kneading to prevent the mixer from walking off the counter.)

Drain the potatoes very well, then return them to the saucepan over medium heat and cook, stirring and breaking up large pieces, until the potatoes are dry and crumbly, about 3 minutes.

Transfer the potatoes to the stand mixer bowl and mix on low speed until the dough begins to come together, about 30 seconds. Swap out the paddle for the dough hook and knead on medium speed until somewhat smooth, about 4 minutes. Inspect the dough. If it’s very sticky, tearing, and smearing around the bottom of the bowl, add 1 tablespoon of flour and mix on low speed until the dough no longer sticks to the bowl. Keep checking the dough; you may have to add up to 4 tablespoons of flour depending on the moisture level of the potatoes. Return to medium speed and continue kneading until the dough is smooth, another 3 minutes. Transfer to a lightly floured counter and knead by hand for a final minute. If the dough sticks heavily to your hands, work in a bit more flour. The dough should be soft but not overly tacky.

Shape dough into a ball and move to a tall 2- to 4-quart container or 8-cup liquid measuring cup. Add about 1 teaspoon of oil and rotate the dough in the oil to coat it evenly. Press down to flatten the top of the dough, then mark the dough height on the outside of the bowl with tape or a rubber band. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and leave to rise at room temperature until the dough has doubled in size, 20 to 40 minutes.

Once risen, punch down the dough to work out large gas bubbles. Transfer to a lightly floured counter and divide into eight 175- to 180-gram pieces. Form each into a smooth ball, then transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet. Cover with a towel and rest for 10 minutes.

When 5 minutes remain, heat 1 inch of the oil in a wide Dutch oven over medium-high heat to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with a wire rack.

One at a time, flatten each dough ball into a circle, then stretch or roll into an 8- to 10-inch disc. Cut three slits across the center of the disc to help prevent large bubbles from forming during cooking. Transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet and top with a second sheet of parchment. Repeat with the remaining dough rounds.

When the oil is ready, fry the doughs, one at a time, until puffed and golden brown, 1 to 1 1/2 minutes per side. (Although a spider or slotted spoon can be used for flipping, I manage much better with wooden chopsticks.) Transfer the golden-brown beauties to the wire rack as they come out of the oil to drain. Keep an eye on the oil temperature and adjust the heat as needed to maintain 350°F. Continue to stretch out the remaining dough discs while frying.

Consume the breads warm, if possible. (When hot, I always toss one in a zip-top bag with some sugar and cinnamon … the best doughnut ever.) Leftovers freeze well: cool to room temperature, wrap tightly in plastic wrap, and seal in a gallon-sized zip-top bag. Freeze for up to 6 months. Reheat straight from the freezer in a toaster oven or directly on the oven rack in a 425°F oven for 10 minutes.

Cover dough with plastic wrap and let rest 10 minutes.

Heat 1-inch of vegetable oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Heat to 360 degrees F°.

Divide rested dough into 8 equal pieces. Line a baking sheet with paper towels, set aside.

Working with floured hands and one piece of dough at a time (keep other pieces covered with plastic wrap), roll dough or pat dough out on a lightly floured surface into a 6-inch circle (for fry bread to cook more evenly you can make poke a small hole in the center of the dough which helps it not inflate excessively in the center).

Carefully add rolled out fry bread into hot oil, and cook until golden brown, then flip and cook opposite side until golden brown (this usually takes about 30 seconds per side though the second side tends to cook faster). Lift with tongs and let excess oil drain off back into pan.

Transfer to paper towel lined baking sheet to drain. Repeat process with remaining fry bread dough while monitoring oil temp to keep close to 360 degrees F°.

Pour half the water into the bowl and using a dough hook, mix the dough on medium speed, gradually add more of the water until all the water has been added.

Once everything has come together and the dough is smooth, remove it from the mixing bowl and place in a lightly oiled bowl. Cover and let the dough rest 45 minutes to an hour.

When the dough has rested, divide it all into 2 inch rounds. Place the rounds on a floured surface and roll them all out about ⅛  to ¼ inch thick. You can either roll them with a rolling pin or flatten and stretch them using your hands.

Add the vegetable oil to a skillet and heat it up over medium high heat. When the oil is ready, begin frying the frybread one bread at a time by carefully placing them in the oil, frying for 2-3 minutes per side.

The fry bread should puff up and be a golden brown color. When they are done, remove them from the oil and place them on a paper towel lined plate to soak up any excess oil.

Allow them to rest a little before serving.

My families traditional evening Italian dessert on vacation with coffee. Dusted with cinnamon sugar and drizzled with chocolate sauce. A perfect treat.
