Heat grill and slice green tomatoes about 1/4 inch thick.

In medium bowl, combine oil, garlic, brown sugar, Worcestershire (or fish sauce, soy sauce, Tamari), salt and black pepper

Add green tomatoes slices to bowl and evenly coat all the slices with the marinade.

Grill each side of the tomato until your desired texture (about 2-4 minutes on each side). How thick you slice your tomato will determine how long it cooks.

Grilled Green Tomatoes - Accidentally Delicious!

Don't let unripened tomatoes go to waste. Roasting gives them a deeper flavor and the bread crumbs provide a contrasting crispiness.

Roasted Green Tomatoes with Garlicky Bread Crumbs

This chutney recipe is a great way of using up a glut of garden tomatoes, making them last all year

Green tomato chutney

2½ kg green tomatoes

salt

sultanas

cooking apples

light muscovado sugar

1.14l jar spiced pickling vinegar

Slice the tomatoes (you can skin them if you want, but it's not necessary). Finely chop the onions. Layer both in a large bowl with the salt. Leave overnight.

The next day, chop the sultanas using a large, sharp knife, then peel, core and chop the apples. Put the sugar and vinegar into a large pan and bring to the boil, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Add the sultanas and apples and simmer for 10 mins. Strain the tomatoes and onions in a colander (but don’t rinse), then tip into the pan and return to the boil.

Simmer for about 1 hr, stirring occasionally until the mixture is thick and pulpy. Transfer to warmed jars (see tips, below) and cover with lids.

Easy green tomato chutney recipe with green tomatoes, red onions, malt vinegar, and spices. This is a delicious condiment that pairs well with cheese and bread and cured meats. You can make it in an hour and the jars last up to a year.

Green Tomato Chutney Recipe

Kg Green Tomatoes (2.2 lbs

Kg Red Onions (2.2 lbs or about 6 cups)

150 g Raisins (5.2 oz or about 1 cup)

Garlic cloves

Cayenne pepper

tsp Black pepper

tsp Sea salt

500 g Brown sugar (2½ cups)

Litre Malt Vinegar* (32 fl oz or about 4¼ cups)

Prepare the vegetables. Chop the tomatoes, onions, and raisins roughly and mince the garlic.

Place all ingredients into a stainless steel pan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to med-low and simmer uncovered. Depending on batch size and your appliance&#39;s heat, it can take one to three hours. Keep an eye on it and stir regularly.

The chutney is ready when it&#39;s reduced down and appears thick and brown.

Spoon the chutney into warm, sterilized jars and seal with lids. It&#39;s common in the UK to reuse supermarket jars for this preserve and to simply finish with this step. However, it&#39;s better to use proper preserving jars and to water-bath the jars after they&#39;re filled*.

Water-bath the jars to ensure that they&#39;re fully sterilized. Fill a tall pan with water and place a rack at the bottom if you have one**. Bring to a boil then lower your jars in so that they&#39;re not touching and that there&#39;s at least an inch of water above. Bring back to a rolling boil and leave the jars in the boiling water for ten minutes. Lift them out vertically (not tilted) with a jar lifter and set them on the counter to cool. The lids will seal as the chutney cools. It may take twelve or more hours for the seal to take.

Label the jars when cool and store in a dark cupboard. Refrigerate the jars once opened and try to use it within a year.

Southern Fried Green Tomatoes

Slice tomatoes into 1/4 inch round slices.

Place tomatoes on paper towels and sprinkle with half of sea salt. Let sit 10 minutes so excess water will drain away.

Whisk buttermilk and egg together in a bowl.

Prepare dry batter mix by combining cornmeal, flour, garlic powder, pepper, other half of salt and ground cayenne pepper in a large bowl. Mix well.

Scoop out 1/4 of dry batter mix and place in a smaller bowl.

Dredge a slice of tomato into the smaller dry batter bowl, then dip into buttermilk bowl, then dredge in the larger dry batter bowl.

Place tomato on a large sheet pan, then repeat the process until all tomatoes are dredged.

Pour oil in a cast iron skillet until it is about 1/4 inch thick. Heat to medium high.

Place tomatoes in hot oil in skillet. Only put a few in at a time so they can be turned easily.

Fry tomatoes for about 3 minutes on one side, then flip over and fry on the other side until golden brown.

Transfer tomatoes to a wire rack to drain.

Sprinkle tomatoes with extra sea salt.

Serve with homemade blue cheese dip.

Tangy, crispy fried green tomatoes with a flavorful cornmeal breading. This fried green tomato recipe is a family favorite and a true southern gem that is easy to prepare!

Easy Southern Fried Green Tomatoes

Rinse and slice the green tomatoes into about 1/4 inch thick slices. Pat the tomatoes dry with paper towels to remove any excess moisture and set them aside.

In a small shallow plate or dish, add 1/2 cup of flour and 1/2 teaspoon of salt and whisk the ingredients to combine. In a separate shallow dish such as a baking dish or pie plate, whisk together the other 1/2 cup of flour, cornmeal, and spices until combined. In a third shallow dish, whisk together the buttermilk, egg, and hot sauce.

Set up your dredging station by lining up each dish, with the tomatoes first, plain flour second, buttermilk mixture third, and the cornmeal mixture last. Have a large baking sheet nearby that you place the tomatoes on after you've breaded them.

Working with one tomato at a time, coat both sides of the tomato in flour, shaking off any excess, then the buttermilk mixture, and lastly the cornmeal mixture, shaking off any excess. Allow the breaded tomatoes to sit on the baking sheet while you heat the frying oil.

Heat oil in a 10-inch cast-iron or heavy-bottom skillet until it reaches 350°F on a deep fryer thermometer. Working in batches of 3 to 4 tomatoes at a time, carefully place the tomatoes in the hot oil and fry, flipping once, until golden brown on both sides, about 2 minutes per side. Repeat with the remaining tomato slices. Carefully transfer the fried green tomatoes to a wire rack to cool.

Serve the tomatoes warm with your favorite dipping sauce, such as our New Orleans Remoulade Sauce. Enjoy!

Green Tomato Chilli Jam is a deliciously sweet and hot relish that&#039;s easy to make.  It&#039;s the perfect way to use unripe green tomatoes and turn them into a preserve that adds spice to your meals and makes a great gift too!

Green Tomato Chilli Jam

red chillies (with their seeds)

80 millilitres Thai fish sauce

granulated sugar

millilitres red wine vinegar

Chop the whole fresh or frozen green tomatoes into small dice and set aside.

Cut off the stems and roughly cut up the chillies. Remove the skin and roughly chop the ginger. Peel the garlic cloves.

Put the fish sauce into the food processor with the chillies and their seeds, garlic and ginger and blitz into a fine puree.

Spoon the puree into a deep, heavy-bottomed pan and add the sugar and wine vinegar.

Bring to the boil slowly, stirring as you go.  When it comes to the boil, turn down to a simmer and add the diced tomatoes.

Skim off any foam that rises to the surface and cook gently for about 1 hour, stirring from time to time, to prevent the mixture catching and burning. Scrape the sides of the pot too, so that everything cooks evenly.

The mixture thickens as it cooks when it seems looks thick enough and your wooden spoon leaves a clear trail through the mixture take it off the heat..

Use a ladle or jug to pour it into warm, sterilised jars and seal.

Fried Green Tomatoes with Remoulade

mayonnaise

Creole seasoning

In a small bowl combine the mayonnaise, sour cream, ketchup, mustard, lemon juice, garlic, horseradish, and Creole seasoning. Stir well to combine. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to develop.

For the remoulade:

Thinly slice the tomatoes, and lightly salt each side. Place in a colander in the sink and allow the salt to draw some of the moisture out for about 10 minutes.

In a medium bowl whisk the egg and buttermilk together. In another shallow bowl combine the corn- meal, flour, pepper, and 1/2 teaspoon salt. In a deep skillet or Dutch oven, pour about 1 inch of oil into the bottom. Heat the oil over medium-high heat until the oil reaches about 350°F.

Blot the tomatoes with paper towels to remove the excess moisture. Dip the tomatoes in the egg wash, and then dredge them in the cornmeal mixture, pressing lightly to coat them. Fry in the hot oil for 4 to 5 minutes on each side, or until golden brown. Drain on paper towels. Serve with the remoulade sauce.
