Taco seasoning

Prep Ingredients: Before you begin cooking, prepare your toppings and have them ready for assembly. This will ensure your tacos are served fresh and hot when ready.

Cook the Ground Turkey: Brown the turkey in a large skillet over medium-high heat, breaking it into smaller pieces as it cooks.

Season: When no longer pink add the taco seasoning and mix well. Add the onion, garlic, bell pepper, water and tomato sauce, stir and cover. Simmer on low for about 20 minutes or until the sauce thickens and the flavors meld. If it's too liquidy, uncover and simmer a few more minutes. Adjust salt to taste, as needed.

Assemble the Tacos: Char the tortillas about 30 seconds on each side over the flame. OR If using hard shells, heat according to package directions. Divide the meat equally with a slotted spoon, about 1/4 cup each and top with cheese, lettuce, pico de gallo and optional toppings of your choice.

Serve: Once assembled, eat right away while the filling is warm and the tortillas or shells are warm or crispy.

I never bothered with this recipe because throwing an envelope over a pound of ground beef was easy enough and always a crowd pleaser. But I decided to give it a go last week and even my super picky 15 yo son said they were the best tacos ever!

We loved this recipe! It was delicious and is a new favorite in our home. Thanks Gina!

I make four batches of this every month! It’s my favorite!!!!!

Make the best turkey taco meat packed with zesty Southwestern flavor, lean protein, and plenty of veggies. These healthy ground turkey tacos are the ultimate make-ahead weeknight recipe!

Healthy Ground Turkey Tacos

red onion ((about ¼ large red onion))

red bell pepper ((about ½ pepper))

ground turkey (93/7) ((see note))

all-purpose flour

taco seasoning ((more

water ((more if needed))

Tortillas, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, salsa, sour cream

Heat Pan

In a large skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat. If you’re using a nonstick skillet, you may not need oil.

Brown Meat and Vegetables

Add onion, bell peppers, and ground turkey. Cook, breaking up the meat, until the meat is no longer pink and the vegetables are cooked.

Add Seasoning

Add flour and taco seasoning and stir to combine, continuing to cook for 1 to 2 minutes or until spices are fragrant.

Simmer

Stir in water, and reduce heat to medium-low. Continue to simmer over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally until water is mostly evaporated, about 10 minutes. You can keep this at a low simmer, partially covered, until you’re ready to serve, adding more water if necessary to keep the mixture from drying out.

In these turkey tacos, we use our family’s favorite taco meat recipe, but swap ground beef for ground turkey. These turn out best when made with ground turkey that has at least 7% fat. To make them really special, try homemade tortillas. Here’s our recipes for flour tortillas and corn tortillas.

chili powder

½ teaspoon smoked paprika

fine sea salt, plus more as needed

avocado oil

turkey, 93/7 (450 g)

tomato paste (35 g)

chicken stock

flour tortillas

Favorite taco toppings

Make spice mix: In a small bowl, stir together the chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, garlic powder, dried oregano, and salt.

Cook the taco meat: Heat the avocado oil in a medium skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground turkey and sprinkle the spice mixture over it. Use a wooden spoon to break up the meat as it cooks, stirring until it begins to brown.

Stir in the tomato paste and cook for 2 more minutes. Add the chicken stock (or water) and simmer for a few minutes until the sauce thickens. Taste, then add more salt if you think it needs it.

Warm tortillas: For a gas burner, turn the burner to medium, place the tortilla over the flame, and heat through. When it starts to blister a bit, flip and warm the second side. Continue with the remaining tortillas. Alternatively, to warm in a skillet, place a heavy-bottomed skillet over medium heat, add the tortillas (one at a time), and cook until warm, soft, and toasty. Keep warmed tortillas wrapped in a clean dish towel to keep them warm.

Build tacos: Divide the turkey between warmed tortillas and top with your favorite taco toppings.

These are the BEST Ground Turkey Tacos packed with flavor from the homemade taco seasoning and ready in just 20 minutes! It’s an easy weeknight recipe that the whole family will love.

Tried this recipe this week and my husband and 2 boys really like it. It was quite good. Thanks for sharing.

I used this wonderful recipe tonight and was amazed at how easy it is. Delicious too. Will definitely make again.

First time making this recipe. I didn't have lettuce so subbed shredded cabbage . Added crunch that wouldn't have been there before. I added pesto also and was well pleased how the flavors all came together in an extra large flour tortilla.

Best tacos ever! The spices delish! Enjoyed by all! Thanks for sharing!!
