Sloppy joes are feel good nostalgia on a bun. Forget the canned sauce, these homemade bad boys are where it&#039;s at!

Sloppy Joes

beef

onion

green bell pepper (diced)

celery

tomato sauce (15 oz)

tomato paste (6 oz)

ketchup

red wine vinegar

worcestershire sauce

brown sugar*

cornstarch + 2 tablespoons water (whisked with a fork)

In a large skillet, brown ground beef.  Drain excess grease.

Add onion, bell pepper and celery. Sautee 3 - 5 minutes.

Add remaining ingredients, mix well.

Bring to a simmer, stirring, and cook until heated through and liquid has cooked off to your liking.

Whisk in corn starch slurry to further thicken sauce if desired.

STOVE TOP DIRECTIONS

On saute mode brown ground beef.  Drain excess grease.

Add onion, bell pepper and celery. Sautee  with beef 3 - 5 minutes.

Add remaining ingredients, stir to mix, then cover and set to &quot;sealing&quot;. (If your pot is prone to giving a burn notice, add an additional ½ cup of water. Cook on manual pressure (high) for 5 minutes then carefully quick release, pausing if the pot begins to sputter.

If the sauce is too thin, cook of some of the liquid on saute mode, and/or stir in the corn starch slurry while still simmering hot.

Italian Sloppy Joes are a simple meal that is super fun to eat and full of hidden healthy veggies.  Perfect for kids and parents!

Italian Sloppy Joes

spaghetti sauce (24 ounces)

garlic (minced)

Vegetables (small diced* (I used those listed below, but

Zucchini

Summer Squash

Eggplant

Mushrooms

Italian bread

mozzarella cheese

In a deep skillet, brown and drain ground beef.

Return beef to skillet and add diced vegetables, and minced garlic.

Pour in spaghetti sauce and mix well.

Bring to a light simmer.

Continue to simmer on low uncovered, stirring occasionally, until sauce is thickened and clinging to the meat and vegetables rather than pooling in the bottom of the pan when you stir.

Serve on Italian bread with mozzarella cheese, or just slop it into a bowl (seriously, so good).

Ground Turkey Italian Sloppy Joes

In a large skillet over medium heat, heat oil. Add onion and cook, 5 minutes. Add ground turkey, garlic, oregano, and red pepper flakes and cook until golden and no longer pink, 6 to 7 minutes.

Add marinara and stir until coated, then let simmer until slightly thickened, 8 minutes.

Heat broiler. Spoon ground turkey mixture onto hoagies and top with provolone, then broil until cheese is melty, 2 to 3 minutes.

I am a neophyte cook, but I can make this and my husband loves it!

Little effort, great results! Loved it and will make again. Used vodka sauce with some tomato sauce added instead and it was fantastic. Two thumbs up.

I made this as a one pot dinner adding bowtie pasta to the mixture and letting it cook for 20 minutes in the sauce instead of making sandwiches. Delicious!

Seriously…this tastes terrible. I had to douse it in Worcestershire sauce to drown out that oregano. Who puts that much oregano in a dish? I should have known better…

Simmer uncovered over low heat for 10-15 minutes, stirring regularly, until the mixture reaches desired consistency. You can keep the skillet covered if you like the sauce “sloppier.” If the sauce is too thick, gradually stir in a small amount of warm water or beef broth. If the sauce is too thin, gradually sift in a small amount of flour while stirring vigorously to thicken.
