This Jamaican Festival recipe is a homemade version of the popular Jamaican snack. Made with a few simple ingredients, this delicious fried sweet dough is the perfect side dish for your favorite Jamaican recipes.

Jamaican Festival (Sweet Dumpling) Recipe

all-purpose flour

cornmeal

Tablespoons sugar

baking powder

vanilla extract

salt

milk (a little less

Heat a heavy bottom pot of oil that has at least 3 inches of oil in it or use a deep fryer if you have one. Turn the heat over medium heat until the temperature reaches 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Add the all-purpose flour, cornmeal, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt to a large bowl and stir to combine.

Add the vanilla extract and milk and stir until the dough comes together. Then use your hands to lightly form the mixture into a ball.

Pinch off pieces of dough and roll them into long oval shapes. Make about 12 dumplings.

Once the oil has reached the temperature of 350 degrees Fahrenheit, fry the dough on all sides, until golden brown. This should take about 4-6 minutes.

Remove dough and drain off any excess grease. Serve and enjoy.

Jamaican Festivals Recipe

In a large mixing bowl, sift in the self-raising flour, cornmeal, sugar and all-spice, mix until well combined.

Add in the butter and incorporate until the consistency is grainy.

In a cup, mix together the water and vanilla extract, begin adding it into the dry ingredients until the dough forms into a slightly sticky dough. Cover and let sit for 45 minutes.

Divide the dough into 8-10 equal parts. Flour a surface and roll each dough in a cylindrical fashion until you have two pointed ends. Repeat this process for all the dough portions.

Heat up your oil to 350℉ in a deep large pot or pan, begin to drop in the festivals, it is fine to fry in 2 batches so the oil is not overcrowded. Let it fry on medium to low heat on all sides until golden brown and crisp.

Transfer to a sheet lined with paper towels to drain off any excess grease.

These amazing Jamaican Festival Dumplings are Vegan and Gluten-Free, they are reminiscent of the popular street food that I ate while growing up in Jamaica.

Jamaican Festival Recipe

flour (I used all purpose gluten-free flour)

organic cane sugar (or sweetener of your choice)

flax seeds

water ((cold))

vanilla

oil (for frying)

In a medium bowl, whisk together cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, flaxseeds, and salt.

Mix in water and vanilla until fully combined. Knead and form into a dough ball.

Separate dough into equal pieces, about 6-12 depending on size. Shape each piece into sausage shape by rolling between the palm of your hands and flatten slightly.

Heat oil in a non-stick skillet over medium-high heat. Place dough into the skillet and cook for about 3 minutes on one side, reduce heat and flip the dough on the other side for another 3 minutes. Fry dough until golden brown on all sides.

Remove and place on paper towel to absorb excess oil. Serve immediately!

Michelle, I have never used eggs in my festivals and they come out excellently. They are the first to finish when I make them. But then I use regular flour so they don't need a binding agent (not vegan😊)

Hi Michelle, thank you for your delicious recipe. I’ve been searching for gluten free Jamaican fried dumpling and festival recipes. They came out so well. I doubled the recipe to make them bigger. And I’ll add more sugar next time. They are delicious and moist. And cooks in less time that transitional festivals would. This means we eat  sooner and I’m  not exhausted. 

My daughter has been vegan for about four years now.  So, I’m always  revamping our traditional recipes so we can still enjoy our favorite foods. I can’t wait to make gluten-free  fried dumplings. Whohooo!! Great job Michelle!!!!🤗💕🤗💕🥇

Hubby made these, they were delish. Something new for me to try, he used almond flour and cut recipe in half so made about 6. Going to make some patty's now.
