Jamaican Steamed Cabbage is a popular side dish in Jamaica. It is easy to prepare and very flavorful. Shredded cabbage and carrots are cooked with onion, garlic, bell pepper, and thyme.

Remove outer leaves of cabbage, cut in half, using a knife slice thinly discarding the inner core. Shred or thinly slice the carrot.

Heat oil in a large skillet on medium-high heat. Saute onion, garlic, bell pepper, thyme, green onion, and salt

Add cabbage and carrots and stir well. Add water or broth and whole Scotch Bonnet pepper.

Cover and allow to cook for about 10 minutes stirring occasionally.

This cabbage recipe was so easy to make, and tasted so amazing! I made this for a party and everyone loved it!

If you're afraid of the spice, don't cut it.  Pull it out before anything else out of the pot.  I have 2 young kids who love this dish because they associate it with a family friend who lives 1000 miles away now.

I try this for Christmas with  my curry chicken and shrimps It  was good family love it. The only thing is I didn't add the pepper Because my Grand kids don't like spice.

Is the Scotch Bonnet Pepper a requirement? If so, do I simply put a whole one in to increase flavor, then discard once the cabbage is steamed?

Jamaican Steamed Cabbage Recipe (Easy)

Head Cabbage Sliced

Onion Sliced

Red Pepper Julienned

Cup Shredded Carrot

Chicken or Vegetable Broth

Thyme

Black Pepper

Garlic Powder

Tbsp. Oil. (Coconut, Vegetable or Avocado oil)

Cut half onion into quarter inch slices

Cut cabbage into thin slices.

Julienne Red Pepper

Heat pan to medium-high heat. When the pan is heated add oil to the pan. Saute onion for about 3 minutes. Add shredded cabbage to the pan and saute 3 more minutes. Add chicken broth and  Thyme and Garlic Powder, Black Pepper and stir to combine. Turn heat to medium and cover pan for 5 minutes to get the cabbage to wilt a bit. Then add Red Pepper and Carrots. Stir to combine. Cover pan and lower heat to simmer for 10 to 15 minutes or desired doneness.

How to make Jamaican Steamed Cabbage

Jamaican steamed cabbage is a family favorite. Extra veggies add crunch, the Scotch bonnet pepper adds a touch of heat, along with a burst of fresh thyme.

cabbage (sliced, about 4 cups)

carrots

Roma tomato (chopped)

garlic (chopped)

onions

scotch bonnet pepper

water

olive oil

unsalted butter

salt

black pepper (or to taste)

Add all the ingredients to a large pan over medium heat and cover with a lid.

Cook on medium heat for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

After 10 minutes, reduce the heat to low and continue to cook for an additional 5 minutes, until the cabbage is soft and tender. Remove from the heat and remove the stalks of thyme before serving.
