Labneh is a rich and creamy yogurt cheese from the Middle East. This easy recipe results in a tangy spread that you can top with extra virgin olive oil and serve with warm pita. 

Easy Homemade Labneh Recipe

oz whole milk yogurt

In a large bowl, mix the yogurt with salt.

Line a strainer with 3 layers of cheesecloth and place it on top of a large bowl.

Transfer the yogurt into the cheesecloth and bring the edges together to cover the yogurt. Gently press down a little.

Put this in the fridge for 24 to 48 hours.

After 24 hours, the whey has strained from the yogurt into the bowl and you will have thick labneh in the strainer. Discard the whey (or save to use later).

Spread this thick labneh in a shallow bowl. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with zaatar. Serve with warm pita bread.

This homemade labneh recipe is the traditional way to make labneh from scratch using milk yogurt. 

Homemade Labneh Dip From Milk

½ gallon whole milk

full-fat yogurt

Put the milk in a large pot. Set the heat to high until the milk just starts to boil. Immediately remove the milk from the heat. This is important! You have to watch the milk, otherwise, you will run the risk of the milk boiling over and making a mess. The reason why we boil the milk is to kill competing bacteria so that the yogurt cultures can grow.

Let the milk cool down to a temperature that you can stick your finger in for 10 seconds. If the milk is too hot, then come back until you can keep your finger in the milk for 10 full seconds.

Mix the starter yogurt with 2 cups of warm milk (from the pot) in a separate bowl. Mix until smooth. Add the milk and starter yogurt back to the pot full of milk.

Cover the pot and wrap it with a towel. Let the yogurt sit at room temperature for a full 24 hours. For more sour yogurt, let the yogurt sit at room temperature for 48 hours. Don't exceed 48 hours.

Make Homemade Yogurt

Place a thick paper towel (add 2 layers of the paper towel) in a strainer. Place the strainer on top of a large bowl. Add the yogurt on top of the paper towel or cotton cloth fabric. The bowl will capture the whey as it drains from the yogurt. The whey is a yellowish color which is perfectly normal.

Strain the yogurt for around 6 to 8 hours. You can strain the yogurt at room temperature or in the fridge, whichever, you prefer.

Prepare your labneh dip. This is the first step to making this labneh flatbread; place yogurt in a cheesecloth-lined colander set over a bowl and refrigerate overnight (skip this step if using prepared labneh). You can find prepared labneh dip at any Middle Eastern grocery store.

Creamy whipped labneh dip is a special appetizer that takes plain labneh to new heights. Dressed with a warm olive oil sauce with plump cherry tomatoes and Pearls Olives, this tangy dip is ready in just 10 minutes!

Whipped Labneh Dip Recipe

In a mixing bowl, combine the labneh and lemon zest. Season with a large pinch of kosher salt. Whisk gently, and as you do so, slowly, drizzle extra virgin olive oil (about 1 tablespoon). (The labneh mixture should be creamy and fluffy). Set aside or refrigerate for later.

In a small skillet, warm 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil over medium-low heat. Add the garlic and thyme sprigs. Cook for a brief minute, watching the garlic to turn just golden. Remove the garlic.

To the warmed oil, add the tomatoes to the skillet. Turn the heat to medium, watching for the tomatoes to burst a little as they cook. Season with za’atar and crushed red pepper flakes. Add the Pearls Specialties Olives and cook for 30 seconds or until warmed through.

Assemble the dip. Spread the whipped labneh in the bottom of a serving bowl. Top with the warmed olive oil, tomatoes, and olives. Finish with a sprinkle of parsley and more fresh thyme, if you like.

Serve with pita chips or your favorite crackers.

I tried this with a labneh cream cheese since I didn't want to make the labneh. Was really good. But I am wondering how close it would be to what you made?

10-Minute Whipped Labneh Dip with Tomatoes and Olives

This easy labneh dip recipe has got to be hands down one of my favorite mezze&#039;s that is so underrated but unbelievably delicious. The labneh, which is a strained thick yogurt resembling soft cheese, is flavored with fresh garlic, dill, walnuts, and more.

Garlic cloves, crushed

tbsp Lemon juice

tbsp Finely chopped dill

tbsp Finely chopped walnuts

In a bowl, add the labneh and whip it for a few seconds until it becomes more smooth and creamy.

To this, add the chopped walnuts, chopped dill, crushed garlic, aleppo pepper, lemon juice, and salt.

Mix all the components together well. Add to the desired serving dish which I recommend to not be flat and have curvature to its sides so it is easier to dip.

Garnish with more dill, chopped walnuts, sprinkle of aleppo pepper, and a good helping of olive oil over the top.

Enjoy with fresh pita, pita chips, or crackers. The longer this dip sits in the firdge-the more flavor it develops so I recommend refirgerating it for an hour before tasting to see if more acid, salt, or heat is needed. Enjoy!
