From the islands to your dinner table, Loco Moco is Hawaiian comfort food made with rice and a burger smothered with rich gravy and a runny yolk.

Loco Moco - Hawaiian Comfort Food

white rice (uncooked)

water

lb Certified Angus Beef® brand ground beef

tsp kosher salt

tsp black pepper

olive oil

tbsp flour

beef broth

soy sauce

green onions (sliced)

Rinse the rice under cool water. Place the rinsed rice and 2 cups water in a rice cooker and cook.&nbsp;

Shape the ground beef into four patties. Season both sides with salt and pepper.&nbsp;

Heat olive oil in a cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties. Sear for 4 minutes. Flip. Cook for 4 more minutes. Remove the patties and set aside.&nbsp;

Reduce heat to medium-low. Add the flour to the skillet. Cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring continuously.&nbsp;

Add 1/2 cup beef broth to the skillet, and stir to combine.&nbsp;

Add the remaining beef broth and soy sauce. Cook until thickened, about 5 minutes. Whisk in butter. Season with salt and pepper to taste.&nbsp;

In another skillet, heat 2 teaspoons olive oil over medium-high high. Crack the eggs into the pan and fry for 3-4 minutes, until the whites are cooked through. The yolks should remain loose.&nbsp;

Place a large circle cookie cutter on a plate. Fill with a spoonful of rice. Remove the cookie cutter.&nbsp;

Place a cooked patty on top of the rice. Spoon on a ladle of gravy. Top with a cooked egg, and garnish with green onions.&nbsp;

Loco Moco – Hawaiian Comfort Food

Our Loco Moco recipe is a delicious, &#039;stick to your ribs&#039; Hawaiian dish that can be eaten for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Our recipes uses a simple mushroom gravy for an extra savory, umami touch!

Loco Moco

unsalted butter (divided)

shiitake mushrooms (stems removed and thinly sliced)

chicken stock

all purpose flour

salt and pepper

salt

garlic powder

white pepper

neutral oil

basmati rice

furikake seasoning

chives

Add 2 tablespoons butter to a saucepan and place over medium-high heat. Add garlic and mushrooms and sauté for about 3 minutes or until mushrooms are lightly caramelized. Season with salt and pepper.

Melt remaining butter into the mixture. Sprinkle with flour and whisk together.

Lower heat to medium and stir in stock. Continue to stir until no lumps remain and gravy has thickened enough to coat the back of a wooden spoon, about 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Cover and set aside.

Place ground beef, salt, garlic powder, and black pepper into a mixing bowl and mix together.

Form 2 even (4 ounce) patties and lightly seaaon with salt and pepper.

Pour oil into a large skillet and place over medium-high heat.

Once skillet is hot, add burger patties and sear for 3 to 4 minutes on each side. Reduce heat to medium and continue to cook burgers until medium doneness, an additional 3 to 4 minutes.

Remove patties from the skillet and set aside, loosely covered with foil.

In another skillet, add oil and place over medium-high heat. Once skillet is hot, add eggs and fry for 3 to 4 minutes or until whites have set and edges are crisp. Remove from heat.

Divide rice between two plates and top each with a burger patty, followed by a ladle of gravy, a fried egg, and another ladle of gravy. Finish each dish with a sprinkle of furikake seasoning and sliced chives. Serve.

Fry the sunny side eggs to doneness you like. We like the egg whites cooked with the yolk still little runny.

Plate Loco Moco in a bowl or plate...

Plate Loco Moco in a bowl or plate by placing some rice, followed by the burger patty on top. Pour gravy all over the burger patty. Place the egg on top (you can serve it with one or two eggs per portion) and garnish with chopped scallions and parsley.

Prep gravy

Prep gravy: In a medium bowl, add the beef stock, cornstarch, soy sauce, ketchup, sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and salt. Mix to combine and set aside. See Note 3.

Mix burger patties

Mix burger patties: Mix together the ground beef, diced onions, panko bread crumbs, milk, garlic, salt, and black pepper. Divide and form into four patties. Lightly apply oil to hands for easier forming.

Fry burgers

Fry burgers: In a lightly greased nonstick pan, cook burgers over medium high heat until fully cooked, about 3 to 4 minutes per side. Remove burgers and reduce heat to medium low.

Make gravy

Gravy: Stir the gravy mixture as the cornstarch can settle then add it to the pan. Keep stirring until it comes to a boil and thickens, about 1 to 2 minutes. See Note 4.

Fry egg

Fry eggs: Fry eggs to your liking - sunny side up, over medium, or over easy.

Assemble and serve

Assemble: Add steamed rice to a bowl, top with a burger patty, pour a generous amount of gravy on top, then top with a fried egg. Garnish with green onions and serve.

Calrose rice

First, cook the rice according to package directions. You will need 2 cups of cooked rice for this recipe for 2 servings. Keep warm until ready to use.

Form the meat into 2 flat patties, like a very thin hamburger. Sprinkle each side of the patty generously with 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste.

Spray a large skillet with cooking spray and cook patties over medium-high heat to desired doneness. You want to have a nice, browned outer &quot;crust&quot; on the meat before flipping. Try to only flip once. When cooked, remove the patties from the pan and wrap in foil to keep warm.

In the same pan (you don&#39;t need to wipe it off, keep those browned bits for the gravy) add 2 tablespoons vegetable oil. If there are enough drippings from the beef to sauté, you don&#39;t need to add additional oil. Add sliced onion and sauté for 2-3 minutes until the onions become slightly soft. Add mushrooms and sauté all together for another few minutes. Add 1 tablespoon soy sauce and continue sautéing until mushrooms become golden brown and onions are soft. Add more soy sauce if needed for flavor.

Add 2 cups beef broth and 4 tablespoons soy sauce and bring to a simmer. Combine water and cornstarch to make a slurry. Add a little at a time to the broth while whisking constantly until you reach your desired gravy thickness. Add more broth to thin and more slurry to thicken. Add black pepper to taste. Reduce to warm and stir often until ready to serve.

In a separate small, non-stick skillet. Cook eggs to sunny-side-up or over easy.

Now it&#39;s time to assemble the loco loco! Separate the cooked rice into 2 bowls. Add the burger patty to the rice and pour gravy over the top, to taste. Top with an egg and garnish with green onion and black pepper. Serve hot.

tbsp All Purpose flour

Divide ground beef into 4 patties that are approximately 1 inch thick

Season the patties with salt , pepper and garlic powder.

Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium high heat.

Add the patties to the skillet and cook them on each side for 4-6 minutes until browned and cooked through.

Remove the patties from the skillet to a separate plate. Set aside.

Drain the excess grease from the pan but do not scrape the brown bits off the bottom of the pan.

Add 1 tablespoon of the butter to the skillet and melt it over medium high heat.

Add mushrooms and onions to the skillet and sauté until tender and caramelized (2-3 minutes).

Remove the mushroom and onions from the skillet to the pan with the patties.

For the Patties:

In a small bowl whisk together the broth, worchestershire, ketchup and salt.

Heat the butter in the skillet over medium high heat until melted.

Whisk in the flour and cook for approximately 2 minutes until browned slightly.

Slowly whisk in the prepared broth liquid , continue stirring until simmer. Let the mixture simmer until the mixture thickens.

Return the patties, mushrooms and onions back to the pan while you prefer the eggs.

For the Gravy:

Melt the remaining butter in a skillet over medium high heat.

Crack the eggs into the skillet making sure that they do not overlap (you might have to cook in batches depending on the size of the pan).

Cover the skillet, reduce the heat to low and cook, undisturbed, for 3-4 minutes until all the egg whites are fully set and the yolks are still slightly runny.

For the Eggs:

Scoop a serving of rice onto a plate.

Top the rice with a hamburger patty and pour the gravy, onions and mushroom mixture on top.

Top with the fried eggs and sliced green onions.

Serve warm and enjoy!
