This homemade marinara sauce recipe is made ultra-simply from scratch with fresh tomatoes, garlic, and herbs. No cans, no fuss!

Homemade Marinara Sauce with Fresh Tomatoes

olive oil (15 mL)

garlic (minced)

tomatoes (1 to 1.5 lbs, diced)

basil (finely chopped)

Tbsp honey (15 g)

tsp salt

tsp black pepper

parsley

Cook tomatoes: Heat oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add garlic and cook until soft and fragrant, about 2 minutes.&nbsp;Stir in tomatoes and allow to simmer uncovered until tomatoes have mostly broken down, about 25 minutes. Stir often to prevent burning.

Herbs: Stir in basil, honey, salt, pepper, and parsley (stem and leaves intact). Continue simmering about 10 minutes.&nbsp;Carefully remove sprigs of parsley with a fork.

Serve: You can serve it like this or puree it in a food processor/blender for a smoother sauce.

This Vegan Marinara sauce requires just 1 pot, 7 ingredients, and is ready in less than 10 minutes. It’s so easy to make, super healthy, oil-free, and delicious!

Vegan Marinara Sauce (No Oil)

red pepper flakes (adjust according to spice preference)

maple syrup

Salt (optional)

Place all ingredients in a large pot and simmer over medium to medium-high heat for 2-3 minutes.

Reduce heat to low and cook for another 5-6 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Serve over your favorite pasta or use for pizza sauce.

I got so excited when I saw this recipe posted on Facebook today! I have tried several oil free marinara sauce recipes and haven’t liked any of them very much.  So I made it tonight and it is absolutely delicious!I even had all of the ingredients already in my pantry! My hunt for the perfect homemade marinara sauce is over! Thank you so much, Shane!

Hi, Stephanie! A couple of things: 1) You can leave out the maple syrup and it is still very good. Very savory. 2) Yes, you can shred carrots, saute them, and blend them briefly with the sacue before heating. You could also just add them to the sauce without blending. Hope this helps! I used whole Italian tomatoes in a tin which I crushed up by hand before cooking it with the rest of ingredients on the stove top.

I loved this recipe. I put it over spaghetti squash and both my husband and I loved it. I froze it and when I thawed it later it was even better!! !Quick, easy and the ingredients are most likely already in your pantry. Thanks!

Love this recipe!! Have made it many times now, at least once a week and the only time it ended up bitter was because my fresh basil was apparently not so fresh and had started to go to seed which makes it very bitter.

Very Flavourful! Was looking for a good replacement to my favourite store bought that has oil and this may be it. The easiness of this makes it a true contender as well. TY

My husband loves spaghetti with meat sauce , so I used your recipe as a guide.  I used fresh garlic and onions, substituted an Italian seasoning blend, added frozen mushrooms and a soy-based meat substitute.  We loved it.  I may add a little tomato paste next time to make the sauce a little thicker.  You have some really simple and great-looking recipes and I can't wait to try many of them.

A fast and easy recipe for Marinara Sauce using fresh or canned tomatoes, with garlic, onions and oregano and basil cooked on the stovetop in under 30 minutes. Use this classic Marinara Sauce on pasta, pizza or meatballs.

Classic Marinara Sauce

olive oil

shallots

garlic

chili flakes (or up to 1/4 teaspoon for a nice kick)

salt,more

pepper, more to taste

8-10 basil leaves, torn

Prep the tomatoes

If using fresh tomatoes, quarter them and blend in a blender. Alternatively, slice them in half and grate the flesh, leaving the skins behind.

Saute

In a saute pan, saute shallot or onion over medium heat, for just a few minutes until just tender and fragrant, add the garlic, saute 1-2 minutes. Add the chili flakes and stir for one minute. Add the oregano, and give a stir. Add the tomatoes and all their juices. (If using canned tomatoes, break them apart with a metal spatula as best you can and add all the juice from the can-then add one cup of water rinsing out the can. ) Stir in the salt and pepper.

Simmer

Bring to a simmer, uncovered, and simmer gently 8-10 minutes over medium-low heat,  stirring occasionally, until sauce begins to reduce and thicken. Reduce by one cup ( so you&#8217;ll end up with 3 cups).  If you used the canned whole tomatoes, feel free to blend with an immersion blender.

Stir in the torn basil leaves. Taste, adjust salt, pepper and chili flakes, adding more if you like. If your sauce lacks sweetness, stir in some tomato paste and/or maple syrup.  If your sauce seems watery, just continue to cook it gently uncovered for a few more minutes. If it gets too thick add a splash of water, or if too sweet, balance it with a few drops of vinegar.

Use on pasta or spaghetti or on meatballs. To use as a pizza sauce, cook it down just a few more minutes, to thicken a little more if you like. 😉

Love this made with grated fresh tomatoes.  And it freezes well too!

This was wonderful. I only had about half the fresh tomatoes from my garden, so I added a 15 ounce can of diced tomatoes after I blended them up. What a great and easy idea to get the taste of the fresh tomatoes without all the skinning and seeding. The herbs and spices were just right. I went to the heavy side of the chili flakes and it was perfect. Definitely adding to my rotation. I had a little bit with some roasted pecorino zucchini for a light supper.

nice recipe however dry herbs should be rubbed between palms. then added to the olive oil stir several times to release their flavorful oils , then add a good squeeze of tubed tomato paste bout a tablespoon stir breaking it up so it cooks then add other ingredients stir altogether follow recipe from there

great easy recipe that used up some of my tomato bounty. thanks for the pureeing suggestion. I hadn't thought of that &amp; it worked great. I learned a trick for cutting the acidity of tomato sauce from an Italian chef. add some finely diced carrot to the sauce along with the onion. after years of using a bit of brown sugar or more salt to tone it down I've been able to skip it thanks to the carrot. I love all your recipes and am a faithful follower-thanks for all the effort.

Simple and fresh!  I added a bit of red wine and a spoonful of calabrian chiles instead of chill flakes, it turned out great.

Lovely. It has so much flavor in such a quick sauce! It’s funny how important the tomato paste is for depth. I’ll try it again with canned tomatoes in the off-season or maybe go half and half. It’s perfect with the Italian Baked Beans and Greens!

Easy Marinara Sauce

This easy homemade Marinara Sauce recipe can be made with fresh tomatoes or canned tomatoes for a delicious addition to any Italian-inspired meal!

Marinara Sauce Recipe

butter

onion, finely chopped

(about 2 cloves) minced garlic

lb. fresh tomatoes, peeled, seeded tomatoes

sugar ((optional, but definitely our preference))

salt

pepper

In a large saucepan over medium-high heat, melt the butter. Add the onion and cook, stirring, for about 3-5 minutes (or until soft). Add the garlic and cook, stirring, for 1 more minute.

Stir in the tomatoes and reduce heat to medium low. Add basil, oregano, sugar, salt and pepper.

Simmer, partially covered, stirring regularly, until sauce is thickened (about 10-15 minutes).

Taste the sauce, and add additional salt, pepper and herbs if desired.

If using fresh tomatoes, use a handheld stick blender, a food processor, or a large blender to puree the sauce until smooth. If using canned crushed tomatoes, you can skip this step.

Olive Garden Marinara Sauce has the robust flavor you expect in an authentic marinara. With my copycat recipe, you can skip the restaurant!

Olive Garden Marinara Sauce

red pepper flakes (or to taste)

tomato paste

Italian seasoning

basil leaves

salt and black pepper (to taste)

In a large stockpot or Dutch oven, saute the garlic and olive oil over medium heat, just until fragrant, about 1 minute.

Add remaining ingredients except for salt, pepper, and sugar. Bring marinara to a simmer over medium high heat. Reduce heat to medium low, cover the pan, and cook for 30-45 minutes.

Discard the basil leaves. Taste the sauce and add sugar, salt, and pepper to taste.

Nothing outshines a fresh batch of this homemade marinara sauce. Bonus — it’s super easy to make with just 5 simple ingredients!

(28-ounce can) crushed tomatoes

onion (finely diced (approx 1 cup))

thyme (chopped)

basil (chopped)

Sauté onions and garlic

Heat the oil in a medium-sized pot on medium-high heat. Add the onion and sauté for 3-4 minutes until translucent. Add the garlic and sauté for 30 seconds more.

Cook marinara sauce

Add the can of crushed tomatoes, salt and thyme. (Don&#x27;t add the basil as it will overcook). Once the tomatoes have started to boil, reduce the heat to a simmer. Simmer for 20-25 minutes or until the sauce has slightly thickened.

Stir in basil

Remove the sauce from the heat, stir in the basil and enjoy.

Heat the olive oil in a medium pot over low heat. Add the shallot, garlic, salt, and a few grinds of black pepper and cook for 3 minutes, stirring often.

Add the tomatoes and their juices, balsamic vinegar, cane sugar, oregano, and red pepper flakes. Cover and simmer over low heat for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Season to taste.

Tomatoes, garlic, and fresh basil are all it takes to make this delicious sauce. Ready in just 20 minutes, it&#039;s an easy option any night of the week.

Homemade Marinara Sauce

Salt and pepper (to taste)

Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan and saute the garlic for about a minute until lightly browned (being careful not to let it get too dark).

Add the tomatoes &amp; basil, season with salt and pepper and cook, uncovered, over medium heat for about 10-15 minutes.

Taste for seasoning before serving and add more salt as needed.
