Meatball Sub

Preheat

Heat

Combine the meatballs and marinara sauce in a small pan and heat over medium heat.&nbsp;

Bake

Split the sub rolls in half and then place onto a baking sheet. Spread lightly with butter and sprinkle garlic salt on top. Bake for 3 minutes or until lightly toasted. 

Assemble

Place 4 meatballs on top of each sub, then sprinkle with mozzarella cheese. Fold the top over and bake another 3-5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted.

The fam liked this dish, but I added some garlic and cumin to the sauce. It sounded a little bland as written.  Otherwise, thumbs up and will make it again.

These were a hit with my family!  Had a can of chopped green chilis, but no jalapeño, and a tablespoon of those worked perfectly.  Diced rather than crushed tomatoes, because that is what I had in the pantry.  Served over takeout Mexican rice from the local Mexican restaurant, because there are only 24 hours in a day!  This recipe is now on our “make this again, Mom” list.

Easy Italian Meatball Subs with homemade meatballs, baked and topped with a simple Italian marinara sauce, served on a toasted hoagie with melted cheese!

Italian Meatball Subs

low-sodium beef broth

In a large bowl combine all of the meatball ingredients together EXCEPT for the meat. Stir and rest for 10 minutes so the crackers can soak up the liquid. Add the meat and mix just until combined (don't over mix).

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or foil. Form 15 meatballs, about the size of golf balls, and gently sprinkle them all around with flour.

Place the meatballs one inch apart on the baking sheet and bake for 20 -25 minutes or until cooked through.

While the meatballs cook, make the sauce.

Homemade Italian Meatballs:

Add all of the sauce ingredients to a saucepan and stir to combine. Simmer for 10-15 minutes.

When the meatballs are finished baking, scrape any grease off the bottom of them and place them in the sauce.&nbsp;

Slice the hoagie rolls in half and layer with cheese. Broil on high for 2-3 minutes or until rolls are toasted and cheese is melted. Remove from oven.&nbsp;

Place 3 meatballs on each sub, followed by a large spoonful of sauce. Serve immediately.

'Meatball sub' pitas

In a large bowl, combine ground beef with egg, breadcrumbs, parmesan, garlic and parsley. Season with salt and pepper. Form into 12 evenly sized balls.

In a large skillet over medium heat, heat oil. Cook meatballs until they are seared on all sides, about 4 minutes. Then add marinara sauce and cover with a lid. Cook until meatballs are no longer pink, about 8-10 minutes more.

Hollow the top of your hoagie roll out to make a boat. Lay three slices of provolone over the roll to cover the hollowed out area and bake for 5 minutes, until melted. Then place four meatballs on top of the cheese in a row. Place in the oven and bake 6-8 minutes more. Broil if desired.

Top with additional parmesan and parsley if desired and serve.

Salt and pepper amounts would be helpful here. Great recipe otherwise.

Meatball Boats: Fun To Make, Fun To Eat

This Meatball Sub on a Stick Recipe is a super fun spin on the classic cheesy meatball sandwich that everyone loves! They’re perfect for a quick meal or a unique appetizer. You’re going to love these cheesy stuffed meatballs. Not only is there cheese in them, I brush garlic butter on the sticks for added flavor and bake them again with more garlic butter and cheese for extra gooeyness. It’s a must try and I can guarantee kids of all ages (and adults of course) will have a blast with them!

Meatball Subs on a Stick

mozzarella cheese

tube store bought pizza dough

wooden skewers

Marinara sauce (for dipping)

lb beef

eggs (lightly beaten)

bread crumbs

Parmesan cheese (grated)

onion (shredded)

garlic (minced)

tsp salt

tsp chili flakes

oregano

butter (melted)

garlic

Preheat oven to 375°F. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. Or, preheat Air Fryer to 375°F.

In large deep bowl combine all of the meatball ingredients. Mix until just evenly combined. Do not over mix or the meatballs’ with be tough and dense.

Shape into 36 meatballs and add one cube of mozzarella cheese into each. Roll the meatball firmly to seal the cheese in.

If using a tube of store bought pizza dough, unroll the dough and cut into 12 long strips. If using a ball of store bought pizza dough, roll the dough into a large rectangle and cut into 12 long strips.

Insert a skewer through one end of the dough strip and then through a meatball. Wrap the dough around the top of the meatball and slide onto skewer. Repeat this process with 2 more meatballs, ending the skewer with the end of the dough strip. Repeat with remaining dough and meatballs. Space dough and meatballs away from each other by about 1/4″.

Combine all of the garlic butter ingredients in a small bowl.

Place skewers on the baking sheet and brush with half of the garlic butter mixture. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until meatballs are cooked through and the dough is golden brown (or Air Fry for about 15 - 20 minutes until the meatballs are cooked through and the dough is golden brown).

Brush with remaining garlic butter, top with additional parmesan cheese.

Serve with marinara sauce. Enjoy!

This meatball sandwich recipe takes 30 minutes from start to finish and will quickly become your family's favorite dinner! The secret ingredient that makes this meatball sub better than the rest is the garlic cheese bread base which prevents the bun from getting soggy!

Quick and Easy Meatball Sandwich Recipe

spaghetti sauce

frozen Italian meatballs

butter, room temperature

Parmesan

Heat spaghetti sauce to a large pan along with oregano and a couple large pinches of salt and pepper, over medium heat.

Add frozen meatballs and cover. Bring to a simmer over medium heat and stir.

Reduce heat to medium low and gently simmer, covered, for about 25 minutes or until the meatballs are heated through.

Once the meatballs have about 10 minutes left, combine butter, garlic, parsley, and a couple pinches of salt until well combined.

Slice hoagie rolls lengthwise down the top of the roll, cutting a "V" shape out of the top of each hoagie roll.

Spread the cut side of the with garlic butter. and divide hoagies between a couple baking dishes.

Bake for 5 minutes to get them nice and toasty.

Then add slices of provolone and broil for 1-2 minutes or until the cheese melts.

Once the meatballs are warmed through, divide them evenly between the garlic cheese hoagie rolls.

Garnish with grated Parmesan and fresh chopped parsley and enjoy!

This recipe will be sure to please on a cold winter day. I'm preparing these for our weekly meal to the homeless in our church commercial kitchen. We serve about 70. We don't have a broiler to melt the cheese. I think I will just return the sandwiches to the oven on a lower temp to melt it and then keep them warm til serving. Your recommendation? (24-ounce) jar pasta sauce (OR 3 cups homemade pasta sauce)

submarine/hoagie/Italian rolls (about 6 inches long each) (toasted (if desired))

In a medium bowl, combine ground beef with egg, bread crumbs, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix with hands or a large spoon until all ingredients are well incorporated.

Form mixture into 12 meatballs, taking care not to make them too compact. Place meatballs in the bottom of slow cooker. Pour pasta sauce over meatballs, making sure that each one is completely covered.

Cook on LOW for 6 hours or until the meatballs are cooked through. (Check sooner if your slow cooker runs hot, in which case the meatballs may cook faster and the sauce may start to darken around the edges.)

To serve, halve each roll lengthwise, toast if desired, and place 3 meatballs inside. Sprinkle with mozzarella cheese. The hot meatballs should cause the cheese to melt, but if not, you may place sandwiches under the oven broiler for a minute to melt cheese completely. Lightly whisk two large eggs in a small bowl. In a separate small bowl, combine the breadcrumbs, Parmesan, garlic powder, onion powder, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper.

Add the Italian sausage and ground beef to a large bowl with the whisked egg, breadcrumb mixture, and milk Use your hands to mix the ingredients together. Avoid overmixing the meat.

Divide and shape the meat into 24 meatballs, about 3 Tbps each. The easiest way to do this is to first divide the meat mixture into four equal portions, then divide each of those in half to make eight equal portions. Finally, divide each of the 8 portions of meat into thirds and shape them into balls to make 24 meatballs.

Place half of the meatballs in the bottom of a slow cooker in a single layer and cover with half of the marinara sauce. Add the rest of the meatballs then top with the remaining sauce.

Cook the meatballs on high for three hours or low for six hours.

After cooking, use a meat thermometer to make sure the internal temperature of the meatballs has reached 165°F. Give the meatballs and sauce a good stir to remix the sauce (there will be some fat pooling on the surface).

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Place the buns on a baking sheet or in a baking dish, then pile three meatballs into each bun. Spoon some of the extra sauce over each one. Top each sub with a little shredded cheese.

Bake the meatball subs in the preheated oven for about 5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the edges of the buns are toasty. Enjoy hot!
