This Classic Mint Julep is the best Bourbon based cocktail. It is the signature drink of the Kentucky Derby, but can be enjoyed any time of the year!

Kentucky Bourbon

Combine water, sugar and mint leaves in a small sauce pan

Bring to a boil over high heat, until sugar dissolves, about 5 minutes

Pour cooled syrup through a fine mesh sieve to remove mint leaves

When the time comes to prepare the Mint Juleps, fill 4 tin cups with crushed ice

Bourbon and 1.5 oz (or more to taste) mint syrup into each cup

Here's how to make a mint julep! This ultra classic cocktail stars bourbon, ice, and lots of fresh mint: a refreshing way to sip on whiskey. 

Classic Mint Julep

(1 tablespoon) water

(1 tablespoon) simple syrup

(5 tablespoons) bourbon whiskey

ice,

Add the mint, water and simple syrup to the bottom of a glass and muddle (mash gently) several times with a cocktail muddler or wooden spoon.

Fill the glass with crushed ice and pour the bourbon over the top. Stir gently to combine. Garnish with additional mint leaves.

Combine the water and sugar in a small saucepan and simmer, stirring, until the sugar dissolves. Add the fresh mint, turn the heat off and let steep for 15 minutes. Strain and chill. The simple syrup can be made in advance and stored in the fridge.

Assemble the cocktail with crushed ice, bourbon, simple syrup and lemon juice. Stir and garnish with fresh mint.

Preparation

To make simple syrup:COMBINE Ginger Sugar and filtered water in a small saucepan. Cook over low heat, stirring often until sugar has dissolved, about 3 mins. Remove from heat. Allow newly made simple syrup to cool to room temperature and set aside.To prepare drink:IN A BOWL, infuse Mint Basil Herbal Tea with bourbon. Let steep for 15 mins. Strain alcohol into a glass. Discard herbal tea.FILL four medium glasses halfway with ice. To each, add 1.5 oz. mintinfused bourbon, 1 Tbsp. of homemade simple syrup, and stir lightly.

When properly prepared, this Kentucky Derby staple is arguably one of summer&#039;s most refreshing cocktails.

Classic Mint Julep Recipe

clean fresh spring water

premium Bourbon

Angostura bitters

Prep. Rinse the mint leaves to make sure any dirt splashed on the underside of the leaves is gone. Don&#039;t dry them. The moisture from the rinse is helpful in making the drink.

Put the leaves in a 12-ounce/355-ml cocktail glass and pour the sugar on top. Muddle them together gently with a muddler or the handle of a wooden spoon. When the leaves and wet sugar begin to turn a little mushy, add the water and the bourbon, and stir with a fork until the sugar dissolves.

Serve. Top with crushed ice, add a couple dashes of Angostura bitters, garnish with the sprig of mint, add a straw, and you&#039;re off!

Rub the sage leaf along the inside of the cup and the rim of the glass. Add the simple syrup and bourbon to the cup. Fill with crushed ice and garnish with a sage sprig right next to the straw.

These mint juleps are refreshing, boozy and so easy to make! You'll just need fresh mint, bourbon, maple syrup and ice. Using maple syrup instead of simple syrup saves a step. Amounts given below yield 1 cocktail; make as many as you'd like in individual glasses.

Easy Mint Julep

Place the mint leaves in the bottom of a sturdy old-fashioned or rocks glass. Muddle them until the leaves are dark, fragrant and broken down, about 30 seconds.

Add the maple syrup and bourbon. Fill the glass with crushed ice and stir the drink for a few seconds.

To garnish, gently clap the mint sprig in between your palms (this releases the fragrant mint oils). Place it in your glass and serve immediately.

These are perfect for summer!! I can just imagine sitting on the deck with the girls and drinking these - so refreshing!

Loved these— just my second try at making a julep and the best! Made these for a mint julep contest at a Derby party. Voted Best Traditional Julep— came in second place to a “cherry limeade julep” (?) made with mint, maraschino cherry syrup, bourbon, ice and a lime wedge. Not exactly sure that’s a julep.....

This is the bestmint julep I've ever made!  Using real maple syrup was nothing short of brilliant! This is the only Mint Julep recipe I'll ever make!

Great, easier then making simple syrup. May have to have these more often then once a year!

This Mint Julep Cocktail Recipe is easy to make at home, with fresh mint, lemon juice, bourbon (or another whiskey), and sugar! No simple syrup needed!

Mint Julep Cocktails

mint leaves (plus more for garnish)

sugar ((sugar in the raw))

lemon juice ((or 1/2 shot))

bourbon (or rye, or another whiskey (four shots))

whole ice cubes (for shaking)

ice (divided, for serving)

Add the mint leaves whole (2 tablespoons), turbinado sugar (4 teaspoons), and lemon juice (scant 1 oz., or 1/2 shot) to the bottom of your cocktail shaker. Muddle them together until most of the sugar has dissolved and the mint leaves are thoroughly crushed.

Add the bourbon (6 oz, or 4 shots) to the cocktail shaker. Add the whole ice (about 1 cup) to the shaker. Cover and shake vigorously for 10 seconds.

Divide the crushed ice into old-fashioned cocktail glasses, tumblers, or mason jars (about 1/2 cup in each glass.) Strain the cocktail mixture into the glasses over the ice and garnish with extra mint leaves. Cheers!
