Southern Fried Apples are made with tart Granny Smith apples, before being fried in brown butter, brown sugar and a warming blend of apple pie spice.

Southern Fried Apples

unsalted butter

brown sugar (packed)

tsp apple pie spice

tsp kosher salt

apples

Melt butter in a large pan over low heat until the butter becomes brown and toasty. This should take about 8-10 minutes.

Add brown sugar, apple pie spice, and kosher salt to the browned butter and whisk until combined. Slowly add the sliced apples and stir to coat the apples.

Cover the pan and cook on low heat, stirring occasionally, for 10-15 minutes, until the apples have softened. You will notice that the liquid has increased in the pan.

Remove the lid and increase the heat to medium-high heat and continue to cook for 3-5 minutes, stirring until the liquid has reduced about halfway and becomes syrupy. Remove from heat. Serve with ice cream or whipped topping.

butter

apples (Granny Smith)

granulated white sugar (granulated, white)

cinnamon

nutmeg

salt

Vanilla Ice cream

Peel, core and slice the apples into even pieces.

Get prepped

Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat.

Add the apples, cover, and cook over low heat for 15-20 minutes, until the apples are soft. Stir often so they don’t burn.

Cook the apples

Mix the white sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt together in a bowl.

Add to the apples and stir. Cook for another 5-10 minutes until the sugar is dissolved and are syrupy.

Add remaining ingredients

Serve over ice-cream, or as a side.

Made these using a Cortland variety of apple. Served as a side with ribs smoked on the grill. A big hit!

I made fried apples for the first time ever using this recipe because I liked the idea of both white and brown sugar. These were the best apples I’ve ever eaten. Plus they are super easy to make. Will never buy premade again

As a true Southerner from North Carolina, we never put any spices in but a small dash of vanilla extract. And I would use much less sugar too (maybe 1/2 cup sugar max)for 6 apples and it be plenty sweet. We always had w/any pork dish and esp good with country ham and buttermilk biscuits! This recipe is the bomb!! I’ve been cooking since I was 8 or younger and I’m almost 58. That being said the ingredients to this recipe are spot on. The only difference I made is I didn’t cover them. We like our fried apples carameliized so I don’t cover them and keep cooking them until they’re sticky like. This is how all the older generation fixed them. I would strongly suggest trying them this way.
