These delectable Shrimp and Grits are cooked with creole seasoning, red pepper, green onions, crisp bacon and garlic over a bed of creamy cheddar grits.

Shrimp and Grits Southern Style with Cheesy Grits

quick grits

water

Bring the water to a boil; add the grits and salt.   Cook for 5-7 minutes or until tender.  Remove from heat, stir in butter, cream and cheddar cheese.

In large skillet over medium heat cook bacon until crispy. Place on paper towels to drain; reserving bacon grease. Coarsely chop bacon once cooled. Add shrimp to bacon grease over medium heat.  Sprinkle with Cajun seasoning and cayenne pepper.   Flip shrimp after one minute; and cook for additional one minute.  Remove to plate.

Add vegetable oil to skillet over medium heat.  Add red pepper and cook until slightly tender; 2-3 minutes. Reduce heat to medium low.  Add green onions and garlic and cook for 1 minute.  Add chicken broth to skillet and stir.  Return shrimp and bacon to the skillet and heat for 1 minute.

Spoon shrimp mixture over cheesy grits.  Serve immediately.

That's it, Beth!  It is the beef stew mix that really makes this such a great and unusual recipe.  Just bought 2 lbs of red shrimp today and will give it a try on Sunday.  Will let you know.

Since I make my own creole spice mix , I did not add more spices and this was perfect for me - hubby added Tabasco Sauce to his.

Made this last night and it was delicious!  The grits were probably some of the best I’ve ever had.

I made this last night, but tried to made it more healthy. I microwaved the bacon. I didn't put salt in the grits and cut out the cream, used I/2 the butter and cheese. I used a little Canola oil for the vegies. It was great, my husband loved it.

Hi there, your recipe is so similar to the one I use....if you get a chance try using white cheddar and when you cook the grits ad a bay leaf or 3? I have to make a huge batch like may 3x or 4x the recipe because my kids and other friends and family members always want a bowl...oh and if you also like you can try the old bay seasonings instead of the creole one?. I enjoyed every bite of your recipe! And I agree a recipe is for each person's taste and liking! You hit a home run with me!

Great recipe! My husband and I made a few changes but used this as a shell. Added tomatoes bear the end and used andouille sausage instead of bacon. We also didn’t have any heavy cream so we added a little sour cream (it was either that or Greek yogurt) I don’t remember what we had in the fridge. Anyhow it was delish! Thanks for the recipe!

Wonderful Shrimp &amp; Grits! This will be my go-to recipe from now on. So simple to make and I love that I can use quick grits (I always have them in my pantry). I did notice that in the ingredient list, it calls for dried parsley but didn't see where it was used in the recipe. It was still wonderful without the parsley!

These delectable Shrimp and Grits will leave you licking your plate and longing for more. The shrimp are skillet cooked with Cajun seasoning, red pepper, green onions, crisp bacon and garlic all spooned over a bed of creamy cheddar grits. 

Shrimp and Grits Southern Style

Creamy cheese grits are a simple southern side dish, great with smoked meats or seafood. Learn how to make grits for a tasty holiday brunch!

Creamy Cheese Grits

yellow cornmeal grits (See Note 1)

milk

tsp kosher salt

cayenne powder ((cayenne pepper))

tbsp butter

oz sharp cheddar cheese (shredded)

tsp black pepper

In a large saucepan add water, milk, salt, cayenne pepper and butter. For creamier grits. Bring contents to a boil over high heat.

Add grits to the boiling water 1/4 cup at a time, whisking constantly to prevent any lumps from forming.

Reduce heat to low and cook grits for 25 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Whisk in shredded cheese a little at a time until completely incorporated (See Note 2). Cook on low heat for another 5 minutes.

Serve with a sprinkle of shredded cheese and black pepper on top.

Made with old-fashioned corn grits, heavy cream, and lots of shredded cheese, these are the most creamy, cheesy southern-style grits you will find! Serve these grits with sauteed shrimp or pan-seared fish for a delicious southern meal.

Creamy Southern Cheese Grits

yellow corn grits (see note*)

heavy cream

parmesan cheese

cheddar cheese

garlic powder

onion powder

cayenne pepper (optional)

butter (unsalted)

black pepper (to taste)

To a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, add the water, cream, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper. Stir the ingredients to combine and bring them to a rolling boil.

Once the liquid comes to a boil, add the grits while stirring constantly so that clumps do not form. Lower the heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer the grits for 20-25, stirring occasionally.

Once the grits are thick and creamy, remove the pan from the heat and stir in the parmesan and cheddar cheeses. Stir the grits until the cheese has melted into them. Add the butter and stir until melted.

Transfer the grits to a serving bowl and top with fresh cracked black pepper. Enjoy!

Pimento Cheese Grits

In a large dutch oven, (ad) boil water, then add grits, salt, and butter.

Cover and simmer grits until tender (about 30 minutes). Stir frequently during this time.

Add a little water if needed and stir to prevent scorching.

Remove from heat and fold in pimento cheese.

Add dried parsley and garlic powder.

Stir in half and half.

Salt to taste if needed.

Stir well and pour into individual bowls.

Garnish with a scoop of pimento cheese and shredded cheddar.

Bring the water to a boil; add the salt and slowly add the grits.   Cover and cook over low heat for 5-7 minutes or until smooth and creamy.  Remove from heat, stir in butter, cream and cheddar cheese.

Add vegetable oil to skillet over medium heat.  Add red pepper and cook until slightly tender; 2-3 minutes. Reduce heat to medium low.  Add green onions and garlic and cook for 1 minute.  Add chicken broth, Worcestershire Sauce, lemon juice, to skillet and stir.  Return shrimp and bacon to the skillet and heat for 1 minute.

Spoon the cheesy grits in a bowl and add the shrimp mixture. Serve immediately. 

This dish is wonderful. So delicious. So American  as it is a melting pot of heritages. I used Pennies Cajun spice mix not as spicy   The cayenne revamped it up. Love this dish!!!

I add about1/8- 1/4 cup brown sugar for that spicy slightly sweet taste.

I've tried lots of shrimp and grits and really enjoyed this one. I used chipotle chili peppers instead of cayenne and added a little bit of chorizo to the pan in the peppers and onion stage. I served it with stewed okra. I prepared it for my daughter's boyfriend from the UK and he loved it!

I am a shrimp and grits fan and will order it just about anywhere we go to eat that serves it. This recipe was delicious!! I only had a couple of pieces of bacon from breakfast so I added in some diced andouille sausage and it was amazing.

I’m not a fan of grits due to the texture, but my husband loves it. He had been asking me to make shrimp and grits since our South Carolina trip 3 yrs ago. The secret ingredient to Black folks shrimp and grits is the Southern Creole sauce! Typical to soul food and Black folks cooking, the seasonings make each recipe like none other. It&#039;s all about the spices and the special sauce.

Black Folks Southern Shrimp And Grits Recipe

shrimp (jumbo, frozen or thawed, peeled and deveined)

avocado oil (or cooking spray)

garlic (minced)

black pepper

corn grits (white)

chicken broth

heavy whipping cream (and another ½ a cup on reserve in case it’s needed at the end)

mascarpone cheese

smoked paprika

chili powder

chicken bouillon (granulated)

parsley (finely chopped)

Remove the Instant Pot lid and turn on the sauté setting for 5 minutes. (Although you will not use all of this time. I like to have the extra minutes for the time it takes for the sauté to become active.)

With the lid off the pot, heat the water, avocado oil, and butter in the stainless-steel inner pot for up to 1 minute.

Add the shrimp, garlic, salt, and pepper.

Cancel the sauté setting and close the Instant Pot lid.

Close the Instant Pot lid (make sure the valve is up – in the position for sealing) and pressure cook on high for 1 minute.

When the cooking time is finished, allow a natural pressure release for at least 2 minutes.

To open the Instant Pot lid, move the valve to ‘venting’ and manually release any remaining pressure, if applicable.

Use a colander to drain the liquid from the cooked shrimp and set the shrimp aside to add to the grits later.

*To prepare shrimp on the stovetop – Heat the butter and oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat and sauté the shrimp with the seasoning ingredients for about 4 minutes until they turn pink.

Instructions for the shrimp

Open the Instant Pot lid and add the chicken broth, grits, salt, and butter to the stainless-steel inner pot.

Close the Instant Pot lid (make sure the valve is up – in the position for sealing) and pressure cook on high for 10 minutes.

When the cooking time is finished, allow a natural pressure release for at least 5 minutes.

Pour in the heavy whipping cream.

Stir the grits to combine the ingredients.

Add the mascarpone cheese and continue stirring.

Remove the stainless-steel inner pot with the grits inside so they don’t dry out.

Cover the Instant Pot stainless steel inner pot with the Instant Pot lid to keep the grits warm while off of the Instant Pot burner.

*To prepare the grits on the stovetop – In a large saucepan, bring the whipping cream and salt to a boil, then stir in the grits. Reduce the heat to medium-low and cover, stirring occasionally. After 5 minutes, fold in the mascarpone cheese.

Instructions for the grits

(You may need to transfer the grits to the skillet at this point if you only have one Instant Pot because you will need to use the stainless-steel inner pot for the sauce.)

Add the heavy whipping cream, smoked paprika, chili powder, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, and chicken bouillon to the empty Instant Pot stainless steel inner pot.

Turn on the sauté setting for 10 minutes. (Although you will not use all of this time. I like to have the extra minutes for the time it takes for the sauté to become active.)

All the sauté to come to a boil and let boil for about 3-5 minutes.

Cancel the sauté setting and stir in the parsley.

Remove the shrimp and grits sauce in the stainless-steel inner pot from the Instant Pot burner.

While the sauce is boiling, keep watch of it and occasionally stir to avoid overcooking and burning.

*Preparing the sauce on the stovetop – In a medium-sized saucepan, stir together the whipping cream and spices and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium and simmer for 15 minutes.

Instructions for the Southern shrimp and grits sauce

Add the grits to a 10-inch cast-iron skillet.

Optional: you can mix in 1/4 – 1/2 a cup of heavy whipping cream to loosen the grits if needed.

Place the cooked shrimp on the grits.

Then pour the sauce over the shrimp and grits.

Heat the skillet with the shrimp and grits in the Instant Pot Omni Plus oven on the ‘warm’ setting for 5-7 minutes or 5 minutes in the conventional oven on the ‘warm’ setting or 150 degrees F.

Remove the skillet from the oven, serve Black folks’ shrimp and grits right away, and enjoy!
