Spaghetti and Meatballs Recipe

white bread ((crusts removed), diced or torn to pieces)

water

lb lean ground beef ((7%-15% fat))

lb Sweet Ground Italian sausage (casings removed)

parmesan cheese (plus more to serve)

garlic (minced)

tsp sea salt

tsp black pepper

all-purpose flour (to dredge meatballs)

olive oil

medium yellow onion ((1 cup chopped))

56 oz crushed tomatoes ((from 2 - 28 oz cans))

bay leaves (optional)

Salt & pepper (to taste)

Tbsp basil (finely minced*)

spaghetti

Combine bread pieces with 2/3 cup water and set aside 5 min then mash with a fork.

In a large mixing bowl add: 1 lb ground beef, 1 lb sausage, 1/4 cup parmesan, 4 minced garlic cloves, 1 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp black pepper, 1 egg and mashed bread crumbs. Mix until well combined.

Form into 1 1/2" meatballs (about a flat ice cream scoop of meat). Dredge/roll meatballs in flour, dusting off excess. Heat a deep, large, heavy skillet or a Dutch oven over medium heat with about 3 Tbsp oil. Add meatballs in 2 batches without crowding the pan and saute until browned on all sides (about 6 min total or 2 min per side). Remove meatballs and set aside (don't worry about cooking through at this point).

How to Make the Best Italian Meatballs:

In the same skillet over medium heat, add more oil if needed and saute 1 cup chopped onion stirring often until soft and golden (5 min). Add 4 cloves minced garlic and stir 1-2 min until fragrant.

Stir in 2 cans of crushed tomatoes and 2 bay leaves. Bring to a light boil (stir to make sure it's actually boiling and not just sending bubbles to the surface).

Add meatballs back into the pan with tomato sauce, partially cover with lid or cover with a splatter screen to reduce splatter and cook at a gentle simmer for 30 min, turning the meatballs occasionally. Meatballs will be tender and sauce will be thickened. Five minutes before sauce is done, stir in chopped fresh basil and season with salt and pepper to taste.

How to Make Easy Marinara Sauce:

Cook pasta according to package instructions until aldente (or to desired doneness), drain and return to the empty pot.

Pour sauce and meatballs over spaghetti and toss gently to combine. To serve family-style, transfer to a large platter, garnish with parmesan cheese and fresh basil and serve hot.

►Light olive oil to saute or use vegetable oil

Ingredients for Marinara Sauce:
►1 cup chopped yellow onion 1 medium onion
►4 cloves garlic minced or pressed with a garlic press
►2 - 28-ounce cans crushed tomatoes *see notes
►2 bay leaves
►Salt & pepper to taste
►2 Tbsp basil finely minced, optional

Other Ingredients:
►1 lb spaghetti cooked aldente according to package instructions

How To Make Spaghetti and Meatballs Recipe | Homemade Marinara Sauce

Comfort food at it&#039;s finest. A family-favourite dinner, this spaghetti and meatballs dish one that is not only delicious but a complete joy to eat! This recipe makes sure that the meatballs are nothing short of flavour!

Spaghetti and meatballs

500 g /1 lbs fatty beef mince ((note 1))

panko breadcrumbs (substitute: normal breadcrumbs)

onion (grated)

tsp worcestershire sauce

rosemary

½ tsp dried thyme (or dried oregano)

½ tsp black pepper

tomatoes

passata

stock (beef

onion (finely diced)

dark brown sugar

(adjust

basil leaves (optional)

parmesan cheese (optional)

In a medium-large bowl, combine all the meatball ingredients and mix with one hand until just combined. (note 2)

With both hands, shape the meatballs to about the size of a golf ball or slightly larger. Makes about 14-15.

Place meatballs into a large non-stick pan or lightly oiled skillet. Sear on medium-high heat. (note 3 for oven method)

Once brown (about 5-6 minutes), turn the meatballs with a pair of tongs and brown the other side then remove from the pan.

Making the meatballs

In a heavy-based pot, add olive oil and onions. Cook on medium-low heat until onions have turned soft. This will take about 6-7 minutes.

Add garlic and stir through until fragrant (about 30 seconds).

Add remaining marinara ingredients into the pot and turn the heat up to high and bring to boil.

Gently add meatballs into the pot and simmer for 25-30 minutes on low heat and no lid. Stirring every 10 minutes. (note 4)

Making meatball marinara

With 10 minutes before meatball marinara is ready, cook spaghetti according to packet instructions.

Place spaghetti onto a serving plate and top with 3 to 4 meatballs with marinara sauce per serve.

optional: sprinkle freshly grated parmesan cheese and fresh basil leaves.

(25-ounce) jar marinara sauce

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the pasta and cook al dente according to package directions. Drain and return the pasta to the pot, covered.

In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, parmesan cheese, garlic, Italian seasoning, parsley, salt and pepper. Use your hands to combine the ingredients together until they’re moist and well blended. Form into 16 meatballs.

Heat olive oil in a large deep skillet over medium heat, add the olive oil and then place the meatballs on the skillet. Cook the meatballs until browned on all sides, 5-7 minutes total. They do not need to be fully cooked at this point though.

Add the marinara to the skillet and gently toss to combine with the meatballs. Lower the heat to low, cover the skillet and simmer the meatballs in the sauce until the sauce is thickened, 15-20 minutes.

Serve the cooked spaghetti noodles with the meatballs and sauce.

My husband is very particular about texture and taste of meatballs and is not very complimentary of most recipes. He only likes his Dad's homemade recipe. He was quite impressed with your recipe. I won't tell you how old I am but I am retired, so that give you an idea.  Believe it or not, I've never made meatballs.  I was always intimidated by them, I couldn't imagine making a good tasting meatball.  Well, I made your spaghetti and meatball recipe and it was delicious.  One of my favorite recipes so far, although I think I say that about every one I try.  This was just delicious and honestly very easy to make but looks impressive at the same time.  On to my search for my next favorite recipe!

If you’re looking to impress someone over dinner, look no further. This silky spaghetti with beef meatballs in a delicious creamy sauce will be a definite winner.

Chicken Stock Cube

Oregano

Thyme

Reduced-Fat Red Pesto

Single Cream

Spaghetti

Basil

Parmesan

Finely dice the onion, crush the garlic cloves and slice the sundried tomatoes into bite-sized pieces. 

Pour a glug of oil from the sundried tomato jar into a large pan over a medium heat. Add the meatballs and fry for about 10 mins or until the meatballs are nicely browned and cooked through. Transfer the meatballs to a plate and set aside.

Meanwhile, set a large saucepan of boiling water over a high heat then add the stock cube and stir to dissolve.

Return the empty meatball pan to the hob and reduce the heat to low-medium. Add another splash of the sundried tomato oil then add the onion and garlic and fry for about 7 mins until softened.

Drop your spaghetti into the boiling water and cook following packet instructions.

Add the sundried tomatoes, oregano, thyme, pesto, salt and pepper to the pan with the onion and garlic. Toss the meatballs back in and stir to coat then pour in the cream and a couple of ladles of pasta water. Stir and bring to a gentle simmer.

Drain the cooked spaghetti then add to the pan with the sauce, along with ½ the chopped basil and a splash of the pasta cooking water. Mix well to combine.

To serve, divide the spaghetti between bowls and top with the remaining basil and some grated Parmesan.
