Place broccoli florets in a steamer basket. Set aside.

Add enough water to a pot to come up to about 1 inch. Bring it to a boil over medium heat.

When the water is boiling, carefully place the steamer basket with broccoli into the pot. Cover with lid.

Steam for 5 minutes. Check the broccoli if it's soft. If you want it softer, cook for 1 more minute. It is helpful to set up a timer (ex. on your microwave).

Best Broccoli Seasoning

This steamed broccoli recipe is my favorite method for cooking broccoli. It takes less than 10 minutes, and the florets are sweet, crisp-tender, and bright green. Serve it as a side dish, or toss it into grain bowls, mac and cheese, and more!

How to Steam Broccoli

Water (for steaming)

Olive oil, lemon juice, salt, and pepper (for seasoning, optional)

Place the broccoli florets in a steamer basket and set over a pot with 1-inch of water.

Bring the water to a simmer, cover, and let steam 5 minutes, until the broccoli is tender.

Season the steamed broccoli with olive oil, lemon juice, salt, and pepper, as desired.

This makes enough sauce for several pounds of broccoli. The sauce keeps well for up to a month in the refrigerator and can be used as a dipping sauce for other vegetables, grilled meats and seafood, rice, or pot stickers.

Broccoli with Korean BBQ Dipping Sauce

In a medium bowl whisk all the ingredients for the sauce.

Let the sauce sit while you steam the broccoli.

Tips for Steaming Perfect Broccoli:

I find most people like broccoli when it has been steamed just until it is tender crisp. Broccoli that has been steamed tender crisp is just soft enough to chew but not so soft it will mash easily under your finger when pressed.

I suggest checking your broccoli after 4 minutes. If it is easy to pierce it with a fork run a piece under cold water until it is cool enough to eat and try a piece and see if it is done enough for you.

If not, continue to steam checking every 1-2 minutes until done.

Using one of our suggested steaming methods (bamboo or metal steamer, wok with steaming rack, a metal steaming basket, or our no-equipment method), bring water to a boil, place the broccoli into the steamer set-up, and cover.

Steam over medium heat for 4 minutes (for crunchier broccoli) to 7 minutes (for more tender broccoli), until the broccoli is still bright green but cooked to your liking. Cooking time will also depend on the size of your broccoli florets—less time for smaller florets, and more time for larger ones.

Meanwhile, make the sauce. In a small saucepan over medium heat, add the oil and garlic. Cook for 30 seconds, or until the garlic softens (there shouldn’t be any browning). Add the water, oyster sauce, light soy sauce, sesame oil, and pepper. Stir the ingredients together, and bring to a simmer. Once simmering, turn off the heat.

Plate your steamed broccoli and drizzle with the sauce. Serve.

Put 1-2 inches of water in the bottom of a pot. Put a steamer basket in the pot. (If you do not have a steamer basket you can cook the broccoli directly in an inch or two of water in the pot.)

Put the pot on the stove over medium-high heat and bring to a boil.

Meanwhile, cut the broccoli into florets.

Once the water comes to a boil, add the broccoli to the steamer basket (or right to the water in the pot), cover with a lid, and reduce the heat to medium. Cook for 3-4 minutes for crisp-tender broccoli or 5-7 minutes for softer broccoli.

Once the broccoli is cooked to your liking, immediately remove it from the heat and take the lid off of the pot. Use a slotted spoon to carefully transfer the broccoli to a serving dish. If using, thinly slice the onion. Place it in a bowl of water while you’re making the rest of the recipe, then drain. (This helps to reduce onion breath and remove some of the spicy bite. If you use green onion, skip this step!)

Place 1 1/2 cups water into a saucepan or pot. If using a steamer basket without a handle, add it to the pot now: the water surface should be right under the basket. Bring the water to a boil.

Once boiling, add the broccoli (in the steamer basket, if it has a handle). Steam with the lid on 3 to 4 minutes until just tender, testing with a fork to assess whether it&#8217;s done. We like our broccoli on the crisp side: if you&#8217;d like it more tender, cook 1 minute more. Just be careful not to cook much longer or the color will immediately fade and it will be overcooked!

Carefully remove the broccoli to a bowl. Toss with the olive oil, kosher salt, feta cheese (optional), and drained red onions. Top with freshly ground black pepper.

Scrub potatoes well under cold water and pierce all over with a fork. Bake the potatoes either in a 350°F oven for about 1 hour, or wrap in damp paper towels and microwave for about 5 minutes (both cooking methods may take a bit longer, depending on the size of the potatoes and the appliances). Once cooked, cut a small incision in the potatoes lengthwise to let steam escape. Cool for 5 minutes.

Meanwhile, bring a medium pot of water to a bowl and cook broccoli until tender, 3-4 minutes. Drain and cool at room temperature.

Add bacon to a large skillet (nonstick, cast iron or stainless steel) and cook the bacon over medium heat until crispy, about 6 minutes. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate and cool for about 5 minutes. Roughly chop.

To assemble a loaded potato bowl, place a potato in a bowl and cut in half lengthwise. Add 1/2 tablespoon of the butter and mash the butter, along with 1/8 teaspoon (about 1 pinch) of the salt, until well combined and light and fluffy. Top with 1/4 cup of the cheese then sprinkle with bacon, broccoli and scallions and dollop with sour cream.
