This sugar free applesauce recipe uses only four ingredients, apples, cinnamon, lemon juice, and water. This recipe provides you with three methods (stovetop, slow cooker, and instant pot) to make your own homemade applesauce.

Sugar Free Applesauce

apples peeled and cored (I like to use a combination of Granny Smith and Gala apples.)

Peel and core your apples. The apple peeler and corer will speed up the process, but you can also cut and core your apples using a pairing knife. Cut the apples into smaller chunks.

Combine the apples with cinnamon in a stockpot or dutch oven. Add 1/2 cup water.

Bring to a boil. Reduce the heat, and cover. Cook for 25-30 minutes on low heat. Apples will be broken down but still a bit chunky.

Remove from heat. Add lemon juice. For chunky applesauce mash with a potato masher or fork. For smooth applesauce use an immersion blender. Serve warm or cold.

Stovetop Instructions

Peel and core your apples. Use an apple peeler and corer to speed up the process or use a pairing knife. Chop into smaller chunks.

Add apples to slow cooker. Sprinkle with cinnamon. Stir to combine. Add 1/2 cup of water.

Set your slow cooker to high, and cook for 4 hours or until apples break down. Add lemon juice.

If your applesauce is chunkier than you like mash it with a potato masher or use an immersion blender for a smoother texture. Serve warm or cold.

Slow Cooker Instructions

Add cinnamon, lemon, and water to the instant pot. Stir to combine. Add apples. Stir to combine.

Secure lid on the instant pot. Cook on manual (high heat) for 8 minutes. Allow the pressure to naturally release.

Transfer to a mixing bowl to cool. Add lemon juice. Stir to combine. Applesauce will be chunky. Mash with a potato masher, or use an immersion blender for a smoother texture. Serve warm or cold.

Place the lid on and bring the apples to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Occasionally stir until the apples are tender and soft, about 15-20 minutes.

Mash or puree apples - For chunky applesauce, use a fork or potato masher in the pot and mash until you reach the desired consistency.

For smooth applesauce, use an immersion blender in the pot or transfer the apples to a blender or a food processor and blend until smooth. Work in batches using a food processor or blender if necessary and  transfer the purée back to the pot and allow to cool with the lid off.

Serve or store - Serve warm or cooled, then store.

Wash your apples very well.

Remove the skin (it is an optional step, I did it because I wanted my applesauce to be smoother.

Cut the apples into cubes, leaving the middle part aside.

Place them in a pot, adding the water. Additionally, you can add cinnamon, a bit of lemon juice, maple syrup or ginger.

Cook for around 20 minutes on medium-high heat with the lid on. They should become soft.

You may use a fork or potato masher to press on the apples. I used a food processor to blend them into a nice and smooth apple puree.

Place in a jar and serve the applesauce warm or cold.

Remove the skin of the apples and cut them into cubs.

Place the apple cubes into the instant pot, adding the water. If you wish, add lemon juice, cinnamon or ginger.

Select the manual mode and cook for 8-10 minutes on high heat.

Transfer into a bowl or food processor and mash the apples with a fork, potato masher or blend in the food processor.

Sugar-free applesauce: in an instant pot

Preheat the oven to 175 C/350 F

Peel and cut the apples into cubes.

Place on parchment paper and bake for 20-25 minutes or until they are soft and it’s easy to insert a fork in them.

Mash them using a fork, a potato masher or a food processor for a smoother result.
