Filtered Water

Ground Black Pepper

Rinse the ginger and turmeric roots, peel them, and chop them roughly. Peel and slice the lemon and orange, removing the bitter white pit and any seeds.

Transfer the ingredients to a powerful blender or food processor, pour in the water, and blitz all into cloudy, deep yellow juice.

Now, strain the ginger turmeric juice through a fine-mesh sieve, collecting as much juice as possible into a cup or pitcher.

Divide the turmeric juice among small sealable vials (like empty spice pots) to make single-serving shots, allowing 60 ml (2 fl oz) of juice per pot. Tip a pinch of black pepper in each vial (to boost turmeric absorption), seal, and shake well.

This will allow you to make the most of the gingerol compound that holds most of the roots nutritional benefits and unique taste.CayenneCayenne pepper not only packs a powerful hit of flavour, but also boasts an extensive list of nutritional benefits thanks to its key active ingredient, capsaicin. Whilst cayenne has its own nutritional benefits and a long list of vitamins and minerals, this hot spice works harmoniously with ginger to help this shot recipe pack a punch.LemonLemons are an excellent source of vitamin C and flavonoids, which are key antioxidants that can help to improve collagen, digestion and more. In just one 58g lemon alone, there’s around 30 milligrams of vitamin C. Due to this naturally high vitamin content, the lemon in this recipe acts a powerful, zesty antioxidant working to counterbalance the spicy ginger flavour, all whilst cleansing the digestive system and balancing your bodies natural pH level. Evidence suggests that Vitamin C is known to also help the body produce extra collagen, which contributes to the integrity of the skin. This hydrating, citrus fruit offers up a great number of valuable antioxidants, whilst providing a tart, refreshing taste.TurmericFrom the same root family as cayenne, turmeric has been proven to be one of nature’s most potent, active ingredients. Used widely amongst medical practitioners for years, the active ingredient in turmeric, curcumin, has countless health benefits, which we’ve previously discussed in our ‘Can a spice lead to better health?’ blog. Though turmeric can be purchased in multiple forms, much like ginger, we recommend sourcing fresh, raw turmeric for this recipe to ensure you’re able to reap the full benefits of turmeric's key active ingredients.

Lemons

Pieces Turmeric (2 inches each)

Pieces Ginger (2 inches each)

Wash the ginger and turmeric roots thoroughly.

Remove the peels of the oranges and lemons. You can do this by cutting the “butts” off each side and then placing the citrus flat on on peeled bottom. Then cut downward along the skin to remove as much peel and as little flesh as possible.

Start juicer at Low and add the peeled lemons.

Switch the juicer setting to Turbo once the lemons are juiced, and add the orange pieces, turmeric and ginger.

Pour into airtight container and/or serve immediately as a turmeric shot (50mL or ~2 OZ) or juice. If storing in airtight container, place container in fridge for up to 1 week.

Juicer Method

Remove the peels of the ginger and turmeric roots. Cut both ginger and turmeric roots into ½” chunks and leave to the side. (Be careful of turmeric stains. When handling, use gloves or it may stain your fingers. Avoid using a white cutting board as well)

Cut the oranges and lemons in half and using your hands or a citrus juicer, squeeze the juice directly into the blender. Make sure to remove any lemon seeds that drop in. Alternatively you can remove the peels of the oranges and lemons and add to the blender to blend first before adding the ginger and turmeric.

Add the chopped ginger and turmeric roots into the blender with the freshly squeezed lemon and orange juice.

Blend until smooth.

Strain into an airtight container. You can also use a nut milk cloth or cheesecloth to strain. Press on the pulp with a spoon, or squeeze (use gloves). Discard pulp or reserve to reuse.

Pour into airtight container and/or serve immediately as a turmeric shot or juice. If storing in airtight container, place container in fridge for up to 1 week.
