Spinach offers a vitamin-rich alternative to lettuce in this sandwich. Chowchow is a mustard-flavored mixed vegetable and pickle relish available on the condiment aisle. Grilled Ham, Muenster, and Spinach Sandwiches

(3/4-ounce) slices crusty Chicago-style Italian bread (about 1/2 inch thick), toasted

(1-ounce) slices reduced-sodium Muenster cheese (such as Alpine Lace)

baby spinach

mild chowchow (such as Braswell's)

Cooking spray

Layer each of 4 bread slices with 2 ounces ham, 1 slice Muenster cheese, 1/2 cup baby spinach, 1 tablespoon chowchow, and 1 bread slice.


Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Coat sandwiches with cooking spray; add to pan. Cook 2 minutes on each side or until browned and cheese melts. Cut sandwiches in half, if desired. Serve immediately.


I made this with a french bread and cut 8 thin slices = 4 sandwiches. One sandwich was enough for a serving. I used arugula for the spinach because I had it and i bought the ChowChow from Amazon. Also, used provolone because i had it. Grilled in butter = good weeknight dinner + lunch.

i used whole wheat bread and horseradish sauce along with the low sodium cooked ham fro m the deli i have to say it was good

I couldn't find chow-chow anywhere. I tried Safeway, Lucky's and Piazza's fine foods with no luck. As a substitute I used relish, which my husband didn't really like much. This would have been much better with the correct ingredients--had they been available.

Made this sandwich for dinner last night for dinner along with a Health "Updated Waldorf Salad," delish, everyone enjoyed.  I did make 2 small changes; added about 1/2 tsp. of light mayo w/ the chow-chow relish and I used hot chow-chow instead of mild.  Good summertime meal.

Great sandwich!!!  Very quick to assemble &amp; cook. Definitely going to be a regular in our house. I used slices of sour dough, because it's what I had on hand. I liked the addition of chow-chow, that's what caught my eye.

OMG!  This is amazing.  Quick and simple.  The flavors are perfect.  The bread makes it "mad"!  I also did use butter, I figured a little fat and flavor would go a long way.  Also had this with the Waldorf salad.
