Party Potatoes

potatoes (about 8 to 10 large) or 4 cups prepared instant potatoes

sour cream

(8 ounces) cream cheese, softened

chives

garlic powder

dry bread crumbs

butter, melted

cheddar cheese

These are great as a side dish and jazzed up a little for a main dish. Instead of using bread crumbs, I've used the dried onions and I  grind them into crumbs and  sprinkle on top. Yum! Its takes it to a whole new flavor! Also,sometimes I use cream cheese and substitute ricotta cheese for the sour cream. Or sometimes we use a little of both sour cream and ricotta. It helps to balance out the sour/ tartness you get from using all sour cream. If we have this as a main dish, we have different fixings like cut up ham,crumbled bacon, etc. Its really a great tasting dish.

These are a classic potluck dish. I always use freshly shredded  & cooked (or cubed) potatoes with great results!  Goes with everything and tastes great!

Yummy recipe! You can use cornflakes instead of bread crumbs.

The combination of sour cream, cream cheese, garlic powder, and chives with the potatoes is awesome. I prefer using instant potatoe flakes it saves time and seems to work a little bit better than the whole potatoes. My boys love them.

My family has been making party potatoes for more than 30 years. Our recipe is the same but does not use the bread crumbs and cheddar cheese, who's use I find puzzling because the cream cheese and sour cream make this dish rich and cheesy

Our stand-by when needing a great potato recipe! I must disagree with Richard G on his finding it "puzzling" to use the cheddar cheese because without this ingredient, it is bland and not worth making. The cheese is what makes this dish tasty! I would not use the bread crumbs though, only because it masks the taste of the dish. The more cheese the better it tastes! Everyone knows that!

Always a favorite, and so nice to have mashed potatoes prepped before the meal. Never was a fan of mashing them right before eating when I'm trying to get everything else done and on the table.

I've been using this recipe for years & the dish is always empty after we eat!  I frequently turn it into a main dish by adding either browned & drained hamburger, diced ham, diced smoked sausage, or fried & crumbled bacon.  It's very filling & flavorful, especially on cold winter nights!

This is one of my all time favorite dishes...especially for the holidays!!!  I have a son that doesn't even like potatoes but will come back for seconds every time!!!  They are also great to make ahead & bake later.  They warm up well too :)

These are yummy and make the big day so much easier just to slip the already-made taters into the oven - I also add S&P and sprinkle with some onion powder - more savory that way - and I have never used bread crumbs when making this - doesn't seem to go with mashed potatoes.

Good, but a little to much of a sour cream taste for us.

Fabulous!  Goes well with everything; steak, chops, fish...you name it.  I love how easy it is to make with boxed potatoes.  My brand is Idaho Spuds.  Cant go wrong in anyway with this recipe.  Leftovers taste great too,

WONDERFUL DISH!  I did not have the chives but it turned out amazing. Every one in the family loved the Party Potatoes.  We are going to make this for Thanksgiving and add a little crumbled bacon on top.

I've always made these with a container of sour cream and chive chip dip and then cheddar cheese on top. Great and very easy!

I did not change anything!  These are so rich and tasty.

These look GREAT; I plan on baking this for Thanksgiving. I wonder how they would do if I fix them maybe a week or two ahead of time and freeze and then thaw a couple days before Thanksgiving?

Awesome! I did use garlic instant potatoes and added a little more garlic. Fresh chives are best in this one!

Could you put this in a crockpot instead of baking?
