In a bain-marie, melt the butter, sugar, and cocoa powder.

Stir in the egg and keep stirring for a minute until the mix thickens.

Add the graham cracker crumbs, the almonds (chopped finely), and the coconut flakes.

When well mixed, pour into an 8x8 inch (20x20 cm) pan and flatten until you get an even layer.

Cream the custard powder, softened butter, and coconut milk until smooth.

Add the powdered sugar and the shredded coconut and mix until smooth.

Pour the mixture on top of the crust and spread it until you get an even layer.

In a bain-marie, slowly melt the chocolate and the butter.

Cool it down a little bit then pour it over middle layer.

Cut them into 9 even squares and sprinkle each one with shredded coconut.

Creamy, chocolaty three-layer Nanaimo Bars are a traditional Canadian bar cookie whose origins are in Nanaimo, British Columbia. The bottom crust is graham cracker, almonds and coconut, the middle filling is a sweet custard-like buttercream, and the top is melted chocolate. Divine. 

The Original Nanaimo Bar

semi-sweet chocolate (1 oz. each)

Melt first 3 ingredients in top of a double boiler. Add egg and stir to cook and thicken Remove from heat. Stir in crumbs, coconut and nuts. Press firmly into an ungreased 8 X 8 pan.

Make the bottom layer:

Cream butter, cream, custard powder and icing sugar together well. Beat until light. Spread over bottom layer.

Make the second layer:

Melt chocolate and butter over low heat. Cool When cool, but still liquid, pour over second layer and chill in refrigerator.

Make the third layer:

Queen Anne Squares

(226 grams) unsalted butter (softened at room temperature)

(210 grams) granulated sugar

eggs

vanilla extract

(215 grams) all-purpose flour

(35 grams) unsweetened cocoa powder

(120 grams) shredded, dried unsweetened coconut

(14 ounce, 397 gram) can sweetened condensed milk

(360 grams) powdered sugar

(25 grams) unsweetened cocoa powder

(90 grams) unsalted butter (softened at room temperature)

(44-60 ml) milk

Preheat oven to 350˚F (180˚C). Line a 9x13 inch (23x33 cm) baking dish with parchment or lightly grease.

In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment or a large bowl, beat together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, and salt. Beat into the butter mixture until just combined with no streaks remaining.

Carefully spread the chocolate batter in the prepared baking pan in an even layer.

To make the chocolate brownie layer:

Clean the bowl and beat together the coconut, condensed milk, egg white, and vanilla extract until combined.

Scatter evenly across the chocolate layer in the pan. Gently smooth with a spoon or offset spatula.

Bake in the preheated oven until set and the edges are golden, 25-30 minutes. Allow to cool completely to room temperature.

To make the coconut layer:

In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a whisk attachment or a large bowl, beat together the powdered sugar, cocoa powder, butter, and vanilla extract. Slowly add the milk to create a light and smooth, spreadable frosting.

Spread the frosting evenly over the cooled chocolate and coconut layers before cutting into small squares for serving.

Wow - so super excited about this recipe! I have to confess that I'd never heard of Queen Anne Squares (although, maybe that's because I've never been to Newfoundland lol). But now I see the gaping whole in my life ... just about the exact size and shape of one of these deliciously decadent little bars!
