Baked Candied Yams - Soul Food Style

sized yams

tbsp salted butter

cinnamon

nutmeg

clove

tsp ground ginger

sugar

brown sugar

tbsp pure vanilla extract (not imitation)

Preheat the oven to 350 F.

Wash the yams.

Peel, then chop the yams ( make sure that they are about 1/2 inch thick.)

Place the yams into a 9x13 bake dish.

Place the butter into a medium sized pot, then melt it over medium heat.

Once the butter is melted, sprinkle in the white &amp; brown sugar, ground cinnamon,ground nutmeg, ground ginger, and ground clove.

Turn the stove off, mix the ingredients, then add in the vanilla extract.

Pour the candied mixture over the yams, and try to coat all the yams with the candied mixture.

Next, cover the bake dish with foil, then bake the yams in the oven for 30 minutes.

Remove the yams from the oven, and baste them with the candied mixture.

Cover the yams, and bake them for another 15-20 minutes.

Remove the yams from the oven, and let them sit for about 10 minutes before serving.

My southern baked candied yams recipe is a easy one. It is more of a southern and soul food version. I use garnet yams, which are red sweet potatoes. The candied mixture for my baked yams is made out of butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and other spices. After I make the candied mixture, I pour it over the yams, and bake the candied yams until the are super tender. This recipe is perfect dish to cook for  holidays. Especially Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The Most Delicious Candied Yams are a holiday table staple! Sliced yams are coated in a sweet sauce with the most amazing spices, and baked until caramelized. You’re going to love it!

Most Delicious Candied Yams

yams

orange juice

Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and grease a medium size baking dish.

In a large bowl or resealable plastic bag, combine the yams discs, orange juice, brown sugar, honey, olive oil, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Toss or shake to combine until all yams discs are well coated.

Pour the contents into the greased baking dish, cover with foil and place in the preheated oven. Cook for 45 minutes.

Remove foil and stir, then cook for another 15 minutes.

Once yams are fork tender and the sauce has caramelized, remove from oven. Let cool and enjoy!

This Instant Pot version of my most popular candied yams recipe is the perfect holiday side dish - ready in just a few minutes!

Instant Pot Candied Yams

medium sized yams (peeled & sliced)

Place all of the ingredients into the Instant Pot, and make give everything a nice stir.

Place the lid on the slow cooker, and make sure everything is secure.

Lemon gives classic candied yams a fresh, tangy makeover. 

Lemon Candied Yams Recipe

yams (about 4 large)

Arrange a rack in the middle of the oven and heat the oven to 400°F. Meanwhile, peel and cut 2 1/2 pounds yams into 1-inch cubes and place in a large bowl. Finely grate the zest of 1 medium lemon into the bowl. Halve the zested lemon and set aside for later.

Melt 1 stick unsalted butter in the microwave or on the stovetop, then pour over the yams. Add 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg, 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt, and 1/4 teaspoon cracked black pepper. Toss until evenly coated. Transfer the yams to a rimmed baking sheet and spread into a single layer.

Roast until tender and lightly caramelized, tossing halfway through, about 35 minutes total. Remove the baking sheet from the oven. Immediately squeeze the juice from the lemon halves all over the yams and toss. Serve hot.

In a small bowl, stir together melted butter, brown sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, ground ginger, and kosher salt well.

Use your clean hands or a large spoon...

Use your clean hands or a large spoon to mix the butter-sugar mixture and sweet potatoes in a baking dish or casserole dish. Make sure each sweet potato chunk is well coated in the mixture and the potatoes are laying in an even layer. It's okay if it's not in one thin layer.

Bake the candied yams in the preheated oven...

Bake the candied yams in the preheated oven for 55 minutes, until potatoes are fork-tender, the sugar and potatoes have caramelized, and there is syrup in the dish.

Let cool for at least 5 minutes before...

Southern Candied Yams

potatoes

Scrub, peel and slice your yams into 1/2 inch rounds. In a medium pot over medium high heat, combine the sweet potatoes and the rest of the ingredients. Stir the sweet potatoes until coated in the sugar and butter mixture.

Let it come to a boil. Cover then simmer for about 50 minutes or until the yams are nice and tender when slightly pierced with the tines of a fork or taste. If the yam is still a bit hard. Let it cook a bit longer. 

Remove the top then set stove to medium. Let the cooking liquid come to a boil. Stirring occasionally until the cooking liquid reduces about 10 minute or until the syrup coats the yams. Remove the pot with the candied yams from the stove and place them into the oven until you are ready to serve them. Candied yams, aka candied sweet potatoes is a old fashioned side dish that's slow cooked in a candied mixture on the stove-top with warm spices, sugar and butter.

Southern Soul food Style Candied Yams

Make Southern Candied Sweet Potatoes (or Candied Yams) with this tried &amp; tested Black family recipe. Uses less than 10 ingredients and easy.

Southern Style Candied Yams

lbs sweet potatoes

butter (salted)

orange juice (pulp free)

tsp vanilla extract

Add the sweet potatoes (whole with the skin on) to a pot large enough to fully submerge them in water

Fill the pot with water, cover it, and bring to a boil

Boil the sweet potatoes until they can be easily pierced with a fork

Submerge the tender sweet potatoes in cold water to cool them off quickly/save time

Prepare the potatoes

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees

Use a butter knife to cut the rough top and bottom part of the sweet potatoes off

Gently scrape the potatoes to remove the skin.

Slice the potatoes into ½ inch discs

Lay the discs in a flat layer in a 9x13 baking dish

Add the baking liquid ingredients to a small saucepan. Heat until the butter is melted. Stir the liquid.

Top the sweet potatoes with sugar, then cinnamon and nutmeg (this should be as evenly distributed as possible)

Pour the melted baking liquid over the sweet potatoes

Bake on 350 for 45 minutes uncovered

Stove Top Candied Yams

dairy free butter (75 grams)

coconut sugar (75 grams)

tsp cinnamon

tsp himalayan pink salt

water (80 milliliters)

Wash and peel the sweet potatoes and carefully cut them into slices (discard the ends and outer skin).

Using a skillet on medium heat, proceed to melt the butter and stir in the spices and coconut sugar

Carefully add in the  potatoes with pink salt and vanilla extract to the sugar mixture

Pour in the water to create a watery syrup then fold and stir with the sweet potatoes (don't worry this will thicken up)

Reduce the heat to low, cover with lid and allow to cook on low heat for 45 minutes to 1 hour.  Continue to baste the yams with the syrup occasionally. Add a splash more water to loosen up the syrup if it's becomes too thick for your liking. The yams should be tender and soft to the touch - can prick with a fork. The butter and coconut sugar should have congealed into a syrup texture.

Serve piping hot and enjoy!

A rich and flavorful southern-style candied yam recipe made with chopped sweet potatoes cooked in a sweet, buttery syrup until tender and glazed. This is an authentic soul food candied sweet potato recipe that you will find yourself making for every holiday and Sunday dinner!

Southern Candied Yams (Old Fashioned Soul Food Recipe)

lbs sweet potatoes (about 5 large sweet potatoes)

butter (unsalted, one stick)

cloves

vanilla extract

Preheat your oven to 375°F. Butter a 9 x 13-inch baking dish and set it aside.

Wash, peel, and slice the sweet potatoes into 1/2-inch thick rounds. Place the sweet potatoes in the buttered baking dish and set them aside.

Heat the butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, and salt in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat until the butter melts. Stir in the vanilla extract and remove the pan from the heat.

Pour the butter and sugar mixture over the sweet potatoes and use a wooden spoon or your hands to stir the sweet potatoes and make sure each potato slice is coated in the syrup. Cover the pan with foil and bake the yams in the preheated oven for 30 minutes.

After 30 minutes, remove the foil from the pan, carefully spoon some of the cooking syrup over the yams, and continue cooking the yams, uncovered, for an additional 20 to 25 minutes, or until the sweet potatoes can be easily pierced with a fork and the cooking liquid is syrupy.

Allow the candied yams to cool for about 10 minutes and enjoy!

These tender yams are buttery, sweet and velvety. They cook up well in the slow cooker simmered in a sweet sauce.

Slow Cooker Southern Candied Yams

7-8 medium sized yams (peeled & chopped)

white granulated sugar

brown sugar (packed)

Toss the yams into the slow cooker

Sprinkle the cornstarch all over the yams, and toss.

Next toss in the white &amp; brown sugar.

Sprinkle in cinnamon, and nutmeg.

Add in the vanilla extract, and water.

Top off the yams with the butter.

Now cover the slow cooker, and set on low.

Let the candied yams cook 3 hours.

Be sure to stir halfway in the cooking process.

Serve and enjoy

Slow Cooker Candied Yams (Southern Soul Food Style) | I Heart Recipes

These Easy Southern Candied Sweet Potatoes are covered in a sugar buttery mixture and baked until tender. It’s the perfect side dish for any table.

Southern Candied Sweet Potatoes

lbs sweet potatoes (peeled and sliced about 1/2 inch thick)

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Lay Sweet Potatoes flat in a 13x9 casserole dish. Sprinkle the sweet potatoes with salt. Set aside.

Melt your butter over medium-low heat in a heavy-duty saucepan. Add sugars, cinnamon, nutmeg, and stir until your butter has melted and your sugar has dissolved. Remove from heat and add the orange juice.

Pour the butter mixture over the sweet potatoes, making sure every single sweet potato is covered with the butter. Cover tightly with foil and place in your preheated oven.

Bake for 30 minutes with the foil on. After 30 minutes, remove the dish from the oven, remove foil and stir the sweet potatoes. Place back in the oven and bake uncovered for an additional 30 minutes or until the sweet potatoes are fork-tender.

Remove from the oven and allow the sweet potatoes to cool a bit. Serve and enjoy.

Easy candied sweet potatoes recipe, homemade with simple ingredients. Tender sweet potatoes are are coated in a sticky butter brown sugar glaze.

Slow Cooker Candied Sweet Potatoes

Orange juice

tbsp Cornstarch

Cinnamon powder

Nutmeg powder

Salt

tsp Vanilla extract

Brown sugar

Sweet potatoes (Large, Peeled, Cut into small 1 inch cubes)

Butter (Unsalted, Sliced)

Pecans (Roughly chopped, For topping, Optional)

Spray slow cooker with nonstick cooking spray. 

Add water, cornstarch and whisk until there are no lumps.

Add cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, vanilla, brown sugar, granulated sugar and mix until combined.

Add sweet potatoes and mix until coated.

Add slices of  butter on top.

Cover and cook on Low heat for 4-6 hours or on High heat for about 3 hours.

Be sure stir everything together halfway through.

Prior to serving, sprinkle pecans on top. Enjoy!
