The best homemade caramel apples recipe! Tart apples are coated with a sweet and buttery homemade caramel and rolled in salty nuts for a delicious fall dessert. Learn how to make caramel apples with our step-by-step instructions &amp; video!

Homemade Caramel Apples

wooden sticks

salted butter

oz sweetened condensed milk

sea salt

Lay out tools

Line a large baking sheet with a silicone baking mat or greased wax paper, set aside.

Locate your instant read thermometer and have it close by.

Wash the apples thoroughly to remove the waxy coating. This step is critical to make sure the caramel sticks to the apples and doesn't just slide off. I use a clean, rough sponge and warm water to gently rough up the skin and remove the wax. Using organic apples without the wax coating is preferred.

Dry thoroughly with a towel and set out on the prepared baking sheet.

Carefully insert the sticks.

Place the apples on the prepared baking sheet and put them in the refrigerator. Chilling the apples & baking sheet helps prevent the caramel from sliding off the apples.

Prepare the apples:

There are many ways to crush peanuts, here are two I recommend: 1) Put the peanuts in food processor or blender and pulse 3 times (or until they are chopped but be careful not to turn them into peanut butter). 2) put them in a nut milk bag or plastic bag and crush with a rolling pin or by hitting them with a large measuring cup (my kids’ favorite way to help).

Crush the peanuts

Put butter, corn syrup, condensed milk and sea salt in a 4-quart saucepan.

Cook over low heat until the butter is melted. Then add the brown sugar carefully, making sure not to splash any on the sides of the pan.

Cook over medium-low heat until the caramel reaches 235-240 degrees F on an instant read thermometer, stirring constantly with a heatproof spatula or wooden spoon, making sure not to let any of the mixture on the bottom or sides burn or get too brown. This takes about 20-25 minutes. Do not rush it.

You will know you’re getting close when the caramel becomes slightly darker brown in color (but it’s still light brown), thickens and pulls away from the sides of the saucepan as you stir. It will also remain solid when removed from the pot and left to cool or put in cold water.

When the caramel is finished cooking, remove from heat, add vanilla and stir vigorously.

Make the caramel:

Dip apples into the caramel one at a time, carefully turning them to coat.

Immediately roll the dipped apples into desired toppings, in this case, crushed peanuts. You can also leave them plain if you'd like.

Set onto the prepared baking sheet to harden. To speed up the process put the finished caramel apples in the refrigerator. Remove 30-60 minutes before serving so the caramel is soft.

Assemble.

Granny Smith apples,

In a small bowl combine the brown sugar, sugar, and cinnamon. Mix to combine.&nbsp;

Wash and dry apples thoroughly. Remove apple stems. Take sticks and push them halfway through the top of the apple. I bought sticks that had one pointy end. This made inserting the sticks much easier. You can use popsicle sticks for this too. &nbsp;

Place apples in the freezer while you melt the caramel.&nbsp;

Melt the caramel according to package directions. Once melted, take the apples out of the freezer and dip them into the caramel. Scrape off any excess caramel on the bottom. This will prevent pooling when you place it on your tray. Place caramel covered apples on a wax paper lined tray. Put the apples in the freezer to speed up the caramel setting process.

Melt the almond bark. Once melted, dip each apple. Immediately after dipping into the white almond bark, sprinkle the apples with the cinnamon sugar mixture. Alternatively, you can roll the apples in the mixture. You might get a thicker coating of the cinnamon sugar mixture (which is a good thing)! I thought sprinkling it on made the end result prettier.&nbsp;

Place the finished apples in the freezer for 5 minutes to set. Remove from freezer, cut into 8 slices and enjoy!

Easy Caramel Apples Recipe

If using store-bought apples, you should remove the wax coating first. Dip apples in hot water for a few seconds then rub them with a towel to remove wax. Dry the Apples really well. Remove stems and Insert Sticks into the top of the apples. Tip: refrigerating apples will help the caramel set faster while you prep toppings and melt caramel.

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone liner. Prepare toppings so they are ready to use.

Heat caramel, cream and a pinch of salt over a double boiler or microwave for a few minutes stirring every 30 seconds until caramel is melted and smooth.

Roll apples in caramel, dipping apples sideways to coat almost to the top. We like to leave a little bit of Apple showing on top so you can see what kind of Apple you’re picking. Allow excess to drip back into the bowl. Scrape off the bottom of the Apple against the side of the bowl so you don’t get too much caramel pooling at the bottom

If you see a lot of air bubbles in your caramel start to form or if it gets too thick, then rewarm it slightly. If caramel so too runny, let it cool slightly before using.

Immediately after dipping in caramel, roll apples into your toppings or leave them plain if desired. Refrigerate at least 15 minutes or until caramel is set before drizzling with melted chocolate and enjoying.

No Bake Caramel Apple Cookies have oats and apples all nestled inside a rich, golden brown caramel cookie! You guys thee are no bake, in other words they're the easiest, and quickest dessert! Add them to your fall no baking list!

No Bake Caramel Apple Cookies

pkg. instant caramel pudding

c. oats

c. toffee chips (optional)

c. white chocolate chips (optional)

sea salt (to taste)

Measure dry ingredients and set aside.

Line a baking sheet with parchment or wax paper.

Bring butter, sugar, and milk to a full rolling boil over medium to medium high heat stirring frequently. As soon as mixture comes to a full rolling boil remove from heat.

Add vanilla. Stir.

Add oats, apples, and dry pudding mix. Stir to combine. Let sit for about 15 minutes.

Add white chocolate chips and toffee chips if desired. Stir.

Drop cookies onto prepared baking sheet. Sprinkle with sea salt.

Let rest until completely cooled. Store in an air tight container.

Candy Coated Caramel Apples

Unsalted Butter

Brown Sugar

Light Corn Syrup

Salt

Remove the apple stems and insert the sticks into the tops of the apples.  NOTE: Be sure the apple is sturdy on the stick.

Add the candy and/or nuts to individual medium-size bowls to allow plenty of room to dip and roll the caramel apples.

Line a baking sheet with wax paper and spray with non-stick spray (for the dipped apples).

Preparation

In a large saucepan over medium heat combine the butter, brown sugar, corn syrup and salt. Stir together and allow to come to a boil.

Equip the pan with a candy thermometer.

Stir in the condensed milk and allow the mixture to keep cooking until it the mixture reaches 248 degrees (the ‘firm ball’ stage).  Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.

Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.

Making the Caramel

Holding an apple by the stick, inset the apple into the hot caramel and twirl the apple to fully coat.

Hold apple above the saucepan allowing excess caramel to drip back into the pan. Note: tipping the saucepan at a 45 degree angle may assist quick coating of the apples as well.

Immediately place the dipped apple into one of the candy or nut bowls, rotating the apple around to cover the surfaces desired.

Place the coated apple on the lined baking sheet to harden.

Repeat until all the apples are coated. TIP: if the caramel begin to set making dipping the apple difficult, allow the pan of caramel to sit over low heat for a few minutes to liquefy it again.

Coating the Apples

Ideally the apples would be eaten after making them however they may be wrapped in plastic wrap and stored in the refrigerator for up to a week.

When eating them out of the refrigerator, allow 45 minutes to 1 hour for the apples to warm up before eating (the caramel is very hard out of the refrigerator).  The apples can be eat on the stick or cut into segments.

Storing and Eating Apples

apples (sliced, half and cored (I used Empire apples))

dulce de leche

If you didn't buy storebought dulce de leche, submerge a can of sweetened condensed milk in a large pot of water with the label removed, and keep on a slow boil for 3 hours, filling up pot with water every half hour or so as necessary. Let can cool for at least 30 min before opening and using.

Cut apples in half and cut out the core. Add dulce de leche and drizzle with melted chocolate, then top with your favourite toppings. My favourite combo is caramel and shredded coconut!

Wash and dry the apples well to remove any wax coating. Remove the stems and insert a bamboo skewer in place of the stem. Place the skewered apples on a parchment-lined tray and refrigerate until ready to dip. Also prepare any additional toppings, if desired.

To make the caramel, add the sugar, corn syrup, and water to a medium sauce pot. Heat over medium-high, stirring often. Allow the mixture to come up to a boil. Continue to stir and boil the mixture until the color changes to a deep amber color.

Remove the pot from the heat and stir in the butter, one tablespoon at a time, until melted into the sugar mixture. Once all of the butter is melted into the sugar, carefully add the heavy cream and stir to combine (it will bubble up and steam quite a bit when added, so be careful).

Return the pot to the stove and heat over medium. Allow the mixture to boil again, stirring often. If using a candy thermometer, allow the mixture to heat to 245ºF. Otherwise, prepare a glass of ice water to test the caramel. Cook the caramel until it reaches &quot;firm ball&quot; stage when drizzled into the ice water. In the firm ball stage, the chilled caramel will hold its shape, but you can still flatten it just slightly when pressed between your fingers. Be careful not to touch the hot caramel, only test the firmness after it has been dropped into the ice water.

Once the caramel is the right temperature and texture, carefully dip the apples, one at a time, twirling the apple in the hot caramel to coat all sides, then transferring to rest on the parchment-lined baking sheet. The caramel will thicken as it cools, so make sure to work quickly. Or, if the caramel is too thin, pause for a minute or two to allow it to thicken.

Dip the caramel apples in any additional toppings right after dipping in the caramel (before moving on to the next apple). Once dipped in the caramel and/or extra toppings, allow the apples to cool for about 10 minutes, or until the caramel is set. You can speed this up by placing them in the refrigerator if needed. Serve and enjoy!

Beat the cream cheese in a stand mixer or large mixing bowl, until smooth. Add the cream and mix well until stiff peaks form, about 3 minutes. 

Mix in cinnamon, vanilla, sugar and caramel sauce until combined.

Serve with apple slices. Refrigerate leftovers.

Melt butter in a medium-sized, heavy-bottomed saucepan on medium-low heat.

Add brown and white sugar and corn syrup. Stir regularly, being sure to scrape the bottom of the pot, until the mixture begins to boil (about 30 minutes). Resist the temptation to raise the heat.

Add the sweetened condensed milk and continue to stir until the temperature on a candy thermometer reads 241 F. You can let it go all the way up to 248 F if you prefer the caramel to be really hard. I like mine to be solid enough to stick to the apple, but still soft enough to not break my jaw.

Remove from the heat and let the caramel cool for a couple of minutes.

While the caramel is cooling, wash and dry the apples and insert sticks.

Roll prepared apples into hot caramel and place into extra large baking cups or onto parchment paper.

Let cool for a couple of minutes and then decorate to your taste!
